Nursing Practice in Recovery Room: A Case of Kibuye Hope Hospital and Mutoyi Hospital

Background: Nursing care in the recovery room is oriented to take into account the patient’s condition after surgery intervention with its main purpose of providing direct and continuous patient observation in emergence from general or regional anesthesia. In the absence of professional assistance, patients can develop complications that can lead them into shock or death. This study aims to understand the place of nurses in guiding nursing care in recovery room in two hospitals of Gitega Province by assessing the nurse’s knowledge and attitudes for the promotion of quality nursing care for post-operative patients. Methods: A cross sectional study design was used to assess the practice of nurses in managing nursing care in the recovery room in these two hospitals. A purposive sampling method was used to select the 82 nurses working in the recovery room for these two hospitals and Alain Bouchard’s formula was used to calculate the sample size. Data were collected using a self-report method involving questionnaire completion with five components addressing participants identifications, factors related to the work organization, factors related to the work environment, factors related to healthcare system, and nursing interventions in recovery room. Results: Findings revealed a significant lack of knowledge among the participants and their attitudes were slightly poor as for most of the variables of factors related to healthcare system as their score was less than 50% and their knowledge for nursing interventions was also poor as most of variable scores were less than 25%. Conclusions: The study findings were slightly poor as their scores were less than 50% in most of the variables;therefore, it was recommended that in-service training and workshops should be organized by these healthcare facilities for the purpose of empowering the nurse’s knowledge and practice. This article explores the comparison between the probability method and the least squares method in the design of linear predictive models. It points out that these two approaches have distinct theoretical foundations and can lead to varied or similar results in terms of precision and performance under certain assumptions. The article underlines the importance of comparing these two approaches to choose the one best suited to the context, available data and modeling objectives.

Assessing Spatio-temporal Characteristics of Water Storage Changes in the Mountainous Areas of Central Asia Based on GRACE

The mountainous areas of Central Asia provide substantial water resources, and studying change in water storage and the impacts of precipitation and snow cover in the mountain ranges of Central Asia is of the greatest importance for understanding regional water shortages and the main factors. Data from the GRACE （Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment） satellites, precipitation prod- ucts and snow-covered area data were used to analyze the spatio-temporal characteristics of water storage changes and the effects of precipitation and snow cover from April 2002 to December 2013. The results were computed for each mountain ranges, and the follow- ing conclusions were drawn. The water storage in the mountainous areas of Central Asia as a whole increases in summer and winter, whereas it decreases in autumn. The water storage is affected by precipitation to some extent and some areas exhibit hysteresis. The area of positive water storage changes moves from west to east over the course of the year. The water storage declined during the period 2002-2004. It then returned to a higher level in 2005-2006 and featured lower levels in 2007-009 Subsequently, the water storage increased gradually from 2010 to 2013. The Eastern Tianshan Mountains and Western Tianshan Mountain subzones examined in this study display similar tendencies, and the trends observed in the Karakorum Mountains and the Kunlun Mountains are also similar. However, the Eastern Tianshan Mountains and Western Tianshan Mountains were influenced by precipitation to a greater degree than the latter two ranges. The water storage in Qilian Mountains showed a pronounced increasing trend, and this range is the most strongly affected by precipitation. Based on an analysis of all investigated subzones, precipitation has the greatest influence on total water storage relative to the snow covered area in some areas of Central Asia. Preliminary Calculation of a Natural System Based Treatment Plant for Grey Water from Butare Central Prison, Rwanda

After the chemical and biological analyses of grey water from Butare Central Prison in Butare city, District of Huye, southern province of Rwanda, the resulting data were used in preliminary calculations of a natural system based treatment facility. In our region, natural systems, lagoons and constructed wetlands were identified as potential effective technologies for wastewater treatment due to the low cost and favorable climate. In our study, the authors calculated two systems of treatment plants, one based on two ponds associated with a constructed wetland and another based on three ponds. This study aims at raising awareness of the required land surface that can allow the use of extensive technologies in treating domestic wastewater from the prison. Depending on the system and on the design equation used, those systems differ from their dimensions. Those systems led to overall surface areas between 0.6 ha and 1 ha. In the next stage that will take an interest in studying the feasibility of the project, the decision will be made in favor of one of the calculated systems in compliance with the accuracy and site specifications that are still to be studied.

The Modi Exponentiated Exponential Distribution

In this study, a new four-parameter distribution called the Modi Exponentiated Exponential distribution was proposed and studied. The new distribution has three shape and one scale parameters. Its mathematical and statistical properties were investigated. The parameters of the new model were estimated using the method of Maximum Likelihood Estimation. Monte Carlo simulation was used to evaluate the performance of the MLEs through average bias and RMSE. The flexibility and goodness-of-fit of the proposed distribution were demonstrated by applying it to two real data sets and comparing it with some existing distributions.

Colorectal Cancer: Epidemiological, Clinical and Histopathological Aspects in Burundi

Colorectal cancer is a major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. There is no study about colorectal cancer in our country. The aim of the study was to assess epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic and histological aspects of colorectal cancer over a 10-year period (1999-2008) in Kamenge university hospital, Bujumbura, Burundi, by a descriptive retrospective study. A total of 37 cases of colorectal cancer, 22 males (59.5%) and 15 females (40.5%), mean age 50.8 years, were retrieved over the period of the study. The colorectal cancer was revealed by a rectal bleeding in 21 patients (56.8%) and an occlusive syndrome in 5 patients (13.5%). All patients underwent surgery. According to Dukes’ stages: 27% were A, 27% B, 19% C and 27% stage D. Histopathologically, 18 cases (46.7%) were differentiated adenocarcinoma, 14 cases (37.8%) undifferentiated adenocarcinoma, 2 cases of lymphoma and 2 cases of leiomyosarcoma. All patients underwent surgery. The hospitalization stay was a mean of 27 days. The prognosis was poor with a mortality rate of 13.5% in the hospital. In conclusion, colorectal cancer deserves awareness as a public health problem in our country.

Esophageal Cancer: Epidemiological, Clinical and Histopathological Aspects over a 24-Years Period at Kamenge University Hospital, Bujumbura, Burundi

Aim: There were no data about esophageal cancer in Burundi. The aim of the study was to highlight the epidemiological, clinical and histopathological aspects of the esophageal cancer. Method: A retrospective study over a 24-years period (from January 1988 to December 2011) was carried out at Kamenge university hospital, including patients with esophageal cancer. The cases were selected on basis of the histological evidence of the cancer. Results: A total of 34 cases were retrieved and included for analysis. Among them, 24 patients (70.5%) were males. The esophageal cancer constituted 8.6% of digestive cancers over the period of the study. The average age was 50.9 years. It was revealed by dysphagia in 32 patients (94.1%) and was concomitantly metastatic in 12 patients. The squamous cell carcinoma was 30 cases (88.2%). 27 patients underwent a curative resection, but the outcome and prognosis were poor. In-hospital mortality and morbidity rates were respectively 8.8% and 17.7%. Conclusion: The present study showed evidence that the esophageal cancer in our country had the same characteristics and distribution as well as in developing countries. It had a poor prognosis and efforts had to be done in the early cancer detection.

Clustering is an unsupervised learning method used to organize raw data in such a way that those with the same (similar) characteristics are found in the same class and those that are dissimilar are found in different classes. In this day and age, the very rapid increase in the amount of data being produced brings new challenges in the analysis and storage of this data. Recently, there is a growing interest in key areas such as real-time data mining, which reveal an urgent need to process very large data under strict performance constraints. The objective of this paper is to survey four algorithms including K-Means algorithm, FCM algorithm, EM algorithm and BIRCH, used for data clustering and then show their strengths and weaknesses. Another task is to compare the results obtained by applying each of these algorithms to the same data and to give a conclusion based on these results.

Monitoring Forest Cover Change and Fragmentation Using Remote Sensing and Landscape Metrics in Nyungwe-Kibira Park

The objective of this study was to evaluate forest cover change and forest degradation in Nyungwe-Kibira Park, a natural reserve straddling Rwanda and Burundi from 1986 to 2015. Landsat TM, ETM+ and 8OLI images of 30 m spatial resolution were used as primary datasets. Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques were used for forest cover mapping and landscape metrics were calculated by using FRAGSTATS software. Classification and change analysis of forest cover type and landscape patterns analysis were carried out. In addition, to analyze the correlated external disturbances, the buffer zone of 5 Km was delineated outside the boundary of Nyungwe-Kibira Park. The results revealed that in among 5 land cover classes considered within the Park, the dominant one was dense forest class covering over 70% of the entire Park area while in the buffer zone cultivated and open land dominated at over 90% between the years 1986 and 2015. Change detection highlighted that within Nyungwe-Kibira forest, approximately 0.27% (4.97 Km2) of forest cover was cleared while 0.07% (1.22 Km2) was regenerated annually. In the buffer zone, the annual cleared forest cover was about 0.76% (13.02 Km2). The five landscape indices chosen at class level indicated a considerable fragmentation of forest inside the Park and the highest fragmentation in the buffer zone. Indeed, these results shed a bleak image over the future of the Nyungwe-Kibira forest that should be helpful for the policy-makers and managers of these natural parks to establish adequate policies to mitigate the forest loss and degradation by implementing quick and effective solutions.

Phenolic Compound Profiles of Two Common Beans Consumed by Rwandans

Legumes are high-protein, medium-energy and micronutrient-rich food consumed in many parts of the world including Africa. This study evaluated the levels of specific phenolic compounds in three legumes. Two varieties of the common bean, (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) soybeans (Glycine max L.), and peas (Pisum sativum L.) from Rwanda were analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection. The phenolic compounds were identified by comparison to the chromatographic retention times and UV spectra of known reference compounds. This study results clearly shows the presence of 11 different phenolic compounds in common beans: gallic acid, (+)-catechin, (–)-epicatechin, caffeic acid, o-coumaric acid, chlorogenic acid, quercetin, 4-hydrobenzoic acid, syringic acid, ferulic acid and vanillic acid. The concentration ranged from 0.59 to 2.27 mg/kg for epicatechin. High levels of catechin (13.5 to 57.9 mg/kg) ferulic acid (26.1 to 47.6 mg/kg) were also observed. Therefore, the results of this study show that Rwandan common beans are a good source of phenolic acids in particular catechins and ferulic acid.
