Determination of mRNA Expression of Typical Proteins of Tight Junctions in the Intestinal Mucosa of Broilers (Gallus gallus domesticus)

Tight junctions are mainly formed by two types of proteins;claudins and occludin, both of which are fundamental to maintain the integrity and barrier function of the intestinal epithelium. This barrier function allows for the absorption of nutrients, mainly by transcytosis;however, in birds, 90% of the substances are absorbed by paracellular mechanisms. Despite this, claudins present in the different parts of the intestinal tract of adult chickens are not known, much less their functional role. This study aimed to determine the presence of mRNA of claudins 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 12, 16 and occludin, in the different regions of the intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, and rectum) in chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) through RT-PCR. To meet this goal, 7 weeks old roosters destined for slaughter and chicken embryos of 16 days of incubation (positive control) were used. For all the processed samples, amplicons of the expected size were obtained;claudin 1 (662 pb), claudin 2 (162 pb), claudin 3 (185 pb), claudin 5 (224 pb), claudin 10 (687 pb), claudin 12 (738 pb), claudin 16 (191 pb) and occludin (430 pb). To corroborate these findings, obtained amplicons were sequenced and, subsequently, a basic alignment was performed on the NCBI, obtaining a correlation of 100% with the original sequences in all analyzed samples. To our knowledge, the present work represents the first written report regarding the presence of mRNA of the main proteins involved in tight junction formation throughout the intestinal tract of domestic chickens of 7 weeks of age. These findings will allow elucidating the specific function of each of the reported proteins in the process of paracellular absorption in chickens.

Background: The collapse of the alveolar ridge in an edentulous area in patients who will undergo oral rehabilitation impedes the harmonic relationship between pontic and ridge. To correct this type of defect there are several surgical techniques that aim to achieve soft tissue augmentation, allowing the conformation of an ideal profile with the use of a pontic. The aim was to demonstrate how the technique of tissue modification in an area with a class b defect of Allen allows the correction of aesthetics in the anterior dental sector. Case presentation: A 41-year-old Mexican woman. Extra and intraoral examination was performed, the dental treatment included connective tissue graft and rehabilitation with Zirconia. Conclusion: Surgery of residual alveolar ridge augmentation with connective tissue graft gives the patient favorable aesthetic results in the anterior area when it will be rehabilitated.

Background: Starr-Edwards prosthetic valves were used for valve replacement, but due to their high thrombogenic risk, they were withdrawn from market. Nevertheless, there are some cases of Starr-Edwards prosthetic valve carriers that have shown long-term survival reaching up to 50 years. The objective of this study was to determine survival in 12 patients with mechanical Starr-Edwards?prosthetic valve and risk factors for predicting valve dysfunction. Methods: Cross-sectional study of patients who had valve replacement with a Starr-Edwards prosthetic valve in a single center from 1968 to 1990. Socio-demographic data, valvular dysfunction variables and mortality were recorded. Logistic regression models to determine valvular dysfunction were constructed. Survival was analyzed with Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier survival curves. Results: A total of 12 patients were analyzed. The median age was 59 years (48.5 - 64). Eleven patients had normal right and left ventricular function. The most common cause of valve replacement was rheumatic valve disease (75%) and it was more frequently in mitral position (50%). Valvular dysfunction was detected in 3 patients (25%). Atrial fibrillation had the highest association with valvular dysfunction (P = 0.005). Stroke was seen in 25% of the population and the overall mortality was 33.3%. Conclusions: The survival of patients with Starr-Edwards prosthetic valve was 66.66% in the 50-year follow-up. Atrial fibrillation had the highest association with prosthetic valvular dysfunction.

Early Feeding vs 5-Day Fasting after Distal Elective Bowel Anastomoses in Children.A Randomized Controlled Trial

Purpose: Determine the safety and efficacy of early enteral feeding after distal elective bowel anastomoses (DEBA) in children. Methods: Controlled randomized trial including pediatric patients with DEBA, excluding non-elective and high risk patients. Variables: Demographics, operative time, anastomosis placement, beginning peristalsis and bowel movement, time to full diet intake, post-operative stay, persisting vomiting and abdominal distention, wound infection or dehiscence, anastomotic leak, reoperation, death. Randomization into: 1) Experimental group (EG): early feeding group, after a minimum 24 hours fasting period, oral fluids and diet was started;2) Control group (CG): obligatory 5-day fasting. Descriptive Statistics: Student’s t test for quantitative and Chi square for qualitative variables, a p-value 0.05 was considered significant. Results: 60 patients were included since June 2003 to May 2004, 30 ineach group. Mean age 2 years, weight16 kg, malnutrition 33%. Stomal Ethiology: Anorectal-malformation 46%, Hirschsprung 13%, inflammatory 35%, tumoral 5%. Mostly in colon 71%. Mean surgical time 142 min. None developed vomiting or required nasogastric-tube. Mild abdominal distension 13%, mild fever 16.5% and wound complications 18%. Anastomosis leakage 6.5%, none required reoperations. Demographic variables showed no statistical differences. Full oral intake was in the 2nd postoperative day in the EG vs CG (p = 0.001). Postoperative hospital stay was 6.0 ± 3 in the EG vs 9.8 ± 4 days in the CG with clinical but not statistical significance. Peristalsis beginning, first flatus passage and bowel movements showed no statistical differences. The complication incidence was low and equally distributed. Conclusions: Early feeding after DEBA is safe and well tolerated in children.

Propolis is a natural substance made from resins collected from trees and plants, and which bees combine with pollen, wax, and their own enzymes. It has a complex chemical composition that varies with the harvest season, vegetation type, bee species, and geographical region. Thanks to its components, it has valuable biological properties such as antifungal, antibacterial, anticancer, antiviral, and immunomodulatory activity. For this study, a sample of propolis harvested in April 2019 was used, which came from a bee native to Mexico (Plebeia frontalis) in whose geographical environment there are seven other native species. Canine distemper virus is an RNA virus that causes a systemic infection with high fatality rates in guests without protective immunity. In this work, the antiviral effect of Plebeia frontalis propolis on canine distemper virus was tested, administering it one hour before and simultaneously to infection. The antiviral effect was evaluated by determining cellular viability with the MTT assay. The results obtained show that this propolis has a statistically significant antiviral effect on both treatments, although it is slightly better when applied one hour before viral infection, so we can recommend it as an antiviral treatment in both domestic animals and human beings. There are currently few studies of the antiviral effect of propolis, this being the first study of a melliponium propolis in veterinary medicine.

Oil production and mainte nance are essential issues in naturally fractured reservoirs because they are the largest and most productive on ***,they present early water and gas channeling but could be remediated by using foaming agents to control these phenomena through blocking channeling *** Mexico these reservoirs have pressure up to 5,500 psi,high temperature up to 200℃,salinity up to400,000 ppm,and hardness up to 250,000 ppm;due to these thermodynamic conditions,there has been no available technology to form stable enough *** this work,a foaming supramolecular surfactant with the capability to chelate Ca^(2+)ions is *** a result,surfactant monomers are bridged by captured Ca^(2+)cations leading to the formation of high-molecular-weight oligomers,which significantly increment the viscosity of the solution improving the foam stability,and since at this manner the Ca2+cations are no longer available to precipitate as components of solid salts,the foaming supramolecular surfactant also performs as *** observations are explained through quantum theoretical *** foam is stable,effectively blocking the gas channels,whereas in presence of oil the foam is broken leading the oil to pass into the *** characteristic rheological properties of the foam allow its injection into the formation at a range of flow rates,foam qualities,and shear stress to achieve the flooding and the blocking of a variety of fractured carbonate formations,and the change of the wettability of the matrix,which is a desirable behavior in a huff and puff process,as reported in a previous publication about a successful pilot test of this foam.

Staining for p53 and Ki-67 increases the sensitivity of EUS-FNA to detect pancreatic malignancy

AIM:To investigate whether tumor marker staining can improve the sensitivity of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration(EUS-FNA)to diagnose pancreatic malignancy. METHODS:Patients who underwent EUS-FNA were retrospectively *** EUS-FNA specimen was evaluated by routine cytology and stained for tumor markers p53,Ki-67,carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA) and ***,specificity,positive and negative predictive values(PPV and NPV),and positive and negative likelihood ratios(PLR and NLR)were calculated in order to evaluate the performance of each test to detect malignancy. RESULTS:Sixty-one specimens had complete sets of stains,yielding 49 and 12 specimens from pancreatic adenocarcinomas and benign pancreatic lesions due to pancreatitis,*** alone had sensitivity and specificity of 41%and 100%to detect malignancy, *** 46%of the specimens,routine cytology alone was deemed *** addition of either p53 or Ki-67 increased the sensitivity to 51%and 53%,respectively,with perfect specificity,PPV and PLR (100%,100%and infinite).Both stains in combination increased the sensitivity to 57%.While additional staining with CEA and CA19-9 further increased the sensitivity to 86%,the specificity,PPV and PLR were significantly reduced(at minimum 42%,84%and 1,respectively).Markers in all combinations performed poorly as a negative test(NPV 26%to 47%,and NLR 0.27 and 0.70).CONCLUSION:Immunohistochemical staining for p53 and Ki-67 can improve the sensitivity of EUS-FNA to diagnose pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

We present a case of keratitis caused by Stenotrophomonas maltophilia in a therapeutic contact lens user with trichiasis and symblepharon. This keratitis was initially diagnosed as caused by Achromobacter xylosoxidans, but the strain was sent for species confirmation and the isolate was finally identified as S. maltophilia by means of 16S rDNA sequencing. The patient rapidly improved on administration of fortified ceftazidime. Physicians should be aware that the definitive identification of the pathogenic agent and prolonged antimicrobial treatment according to culture sensitivities in keratitis are mandatory as treatment success depends greatly on them.
