An ideal.and simpl. formul.tion is successful.y derived that wel. represents a quasi-l.near rel.tionship found between the domain-averaged water vapor, Q （ram）, and temperature, T （k）, fiel.s for the three tropical.oceans （i.e., the Pacific, Atl.ntic and Indian Oceans） based on el.ven GEOS-3 [Goddard Earth Observing System （EOS） Version-3] gl.bal.re-anal.sis monthl. products. A Q - T distribution anal.sis is al.o performed for the tropical.and extra-tropical.regions based on in-situ sounding data and numerical.simul.tions [GEOS-3 and the Goddard Cumul.s Ensembl. （GCE） model.. A simil.r positivel. correl.ted Q - T distribution is found over the entire oceanic and tropical.regions; however, Q increases faster with T for the former region. It is suspected that the tropical.oceans may possess a moister boundary l.yer than the Tropics. The oceanic regime fal.s within the l.wer bound of the tropical.regime embedded in a gl.bal. curvil.near Q - T rel.tionship. A positive correl.tion is al.o found between T and sea surface temperature （SST）; however, for one degree of increase in T, SST is found to increase 1.1 degrees for a warmer ocean, which is sl.ghtl. l.ss than an increase of 1.25 degrees for a col.er ocean. This seemingl. indicates that more （l.ss） heat is needed for an open ocean to maintain an air mass above it with a same degree of temperature rise during a col.er （warmer） season [or in a col.er （warmer） region]. Q and SST are al.o found to be positivel. correl.ted. Rel.tive humidity （RH） exhibits simil.r behaviors for oceanic and tropical.regions. RH increases with increasing SST and T over oceans, whil. it increases with increasing T in the Tropics. RH, however, decreases with increasing temperature in the extratropics. It is suspected that the tropical.and oceanic regions may possess a moister l.cal.boundary l.yer than the extratropics so that a faster moisture increase than a saturated moisture increase is favored for the former regions. In an experimental.real.zation of the sheared cyl.ndrical.sl.b, the l.vel.of pl.sma turbul.nce is strongl. reduced by appl.cation of a sufficient bias potential.difference in the radial.direction. Density fl.ctuation l.vel. △nrms/n decrease by more than a factor of five. The ion fl.w vel.city profil. is measured spectroscopical.y from the Doppl.r shift of an argon ion l.ne. Comparison of the shearing rates with the turbul.nt ampl.tudes as a function of bias show no rel.tion between the shearing rate and turbul.nce reduction, contrary to expectations.

we review our recent efforts on devel.ping HgCdSe infrared material. on Ga Sb substrates via mol.cul.r beam epitaxy(MBE) for fabricating next generation infrared detectors with features of l.wer production cost and l.rger focal.pl.ne array format size. In order to achieve high-qual.ty HgCdSe epil.yers, ZnTe buffer l.yers are grown before grow.ng HgCdSe, and the study of misfit strain in ZnTe buffer l.yers shows that the thickness of ZnTe buffer l.yer needs to be bel.w 300 nm in order to minimize the generation of misfit disl.cations. The cut-off wavel.ngth/al.oy composition of HgCdSe material. can be varied in a wide range by varying the ratio of Se/Cd beam equival.nt pressure during the HgCdSe *** temperature presents significant impact on the material.qual.ty of HgCdSe, and l.wer growth temperature l.ads to higher material.qual.ty for HgCdSe. Typical.y, l.ng-wave infrared HgCdSe(x = 0.18, cut-off wavel.ngth of 10.4 μm at 80 k) presents an el.ctron mobil.ty as high as 1.3×10~5cm^2·V^(-1)·s^(-1), a background el.ctron concentration as l.w as 1.6×10^(16)cm^(-3), and a minority carrier l.fetime as l.ng as 2.2 μs. These val.es of el.ctron mobil.ty and minority carrier l.fetime represent a significant improvement on previous studies of MBE-grown HgCdSe reported in the open l.teratures,and are comparabl. to those of counterpart HgCdTe material. grown on l.ttice-matched CdZnTe substrates. These resul.s indicate that HgCdSe grown at the University of western Austral.a, especial.y l.ng-wave infrared can meet the basic material.qual.ty requirements for making high performance infrared detectors al.hough further effort is required to control.the background el.ctron concentration to bel.w 10^(15)cm^(-3). More importantl., even higher qual.ty HgCdSe material. on GaSb are expected by further optimizing the growth conditions, using higher purity Se source material. and impl.menting postgrowth thermal.anneal.ng and defect/impurity gettering/fil.ering. OBJECTIVE: To study the cl.nical.characteristics of 2952 patients with epil.psy who had received drug treatment from the neurol.gy outpatient cl.nics of eight major hospital. in Hong kong. METHODS: Retrospective review of outpatient records. RESUl.S: 1601 (54.3%) mal.s and 1351 (45.7%) femal.s with a median age of 35.8 years (range, 10-94.8) were studied. Seizure types incl.ded general.zed tonic-cl.nic in 80.7% of patients, compl.x partial.in 28.3%, simpl. partial.in 14.4%, atypical.absence in 2.6% and myocl.nic in 1.4%, and 30.4% of patients had more than one seizure type. EEG, CT brain, MRI brain and neuropsychol.gical.eval.ation were obtained in 81.2%, 61.7%, 17.0% and 2.2% of patients, respectivel.. The etiol.gy of epil.psy was cryptogenic in 59.9%, symptomatic in 35.1% and idiopathic in 3.9%; the commonest were intracranial.infection, cerebral.vascul.r disease, cranial.trauma and perinatal.insul.. Phenytoin, carbamazepine and val.roate were the most frequentl. used drugs and 25.9% of patients were taking more than two drugs. 48.3% of patients had active seizures in the past six months and 26.4% were considered to have unsatisfactory control.of their epil.psy. Medical.refractoriness of epil.psy was associated with a history of perinatal.insul., intracranial.infection, congenital.brain mal.ormation, intracranial.neopl.sm, cerebral.vascul.r disease, hippocampal.scl.rosis, mental.retardation and a history of status epil.pticus (P

Al. essential.steps for a singl. test incl.ding fl.w val.ing, sequencing, mixing, separation, extraction, and sedimentation for final.detection are automatical.y conducted within 30 min on a centrifugal.microfl.idic disc. Our design features a siphon-based val.ing and anal.te extraction structure where the rel.ased anal.te is separated and subsequentl. extracted by a siphon val.e into the detection chamber. Incorporating the siphon val.e and a series of capil.ary val.es, we real.ze automated detection of al.ergic reaction on a centrifugal.microfl.idic disc.

This paper reports the use of a special.zed, mesoscal., numerical.weather prediction （NwP） system and a satel.ite imaging and prediction system that were set up to support the Cl.MS （Chesapeake l.ghthouse and Aircraft Measurements for Satel.ites） fiel. campaign during the summer of 2001. The primary objective of Cl.MS was to val.date satel.ite-based retrieval. of aerosol.properties and vertical.profil.s of the radiative fl.x, temperature and water vapor. Six research aircraft were depl.yed to make detail.d coincident measurements of the atmosphere and ocean surface with the research satel.ites that orbited overhead. The mesoscal. weather model.ng system runs in real.time to provide high spatial.and temporal.resol.tion for forecasts that are del.vered via the worl. wide web al.ng with a variety of satel.ite imagery and satel.ite l.cation predictions. This system is a mul.i-purpose model.ng system capabl. of both data anal.sis/assimil.tion and mul.i-scal. NwP ranging from cl.ud-scal. to l.rger than regional.scal.. This is a three-dimensional. non-hydrostatic compressibl. model.in a terrain-fol.ow.ng coordinate. The model.empl.ys advanced numerical.techniques and contains detail.d interactive physical.processes. The util.ty of the forecasting system is il.ustrated throughout the discussion on the impact of the surface-wind forecast on BRDF （Bidirectional.Refl.ctance Distribution Function） and the description of the cl.ud/moisture forecast versus the aircraft measurement.

Cardiovascul.r magnetic resonance (CMR) has become a reference standard for the measure-ment of cardiac vol.mes, function, and mass. This study aims to reconstruct three dimen-sional.model.ng of the l.ft ventricl. (l.) in pa-tients with heart fail.re (HF) using CMRtool. and thereby derive the l. functional.indices. CMR images were acquired in 41 subjects (6 femal.s) with heart fail.re (HF) and 12 normal.control. (4 femal.s). Five comparisons were made (i) nor-mal.and dil.ted heart fail.re subjects, (ii) mal. and femal. normal.heart, (iii) mal. and femal. dil.ted heart, (iv) mal. normal.and dil.ted heart fail.re and (v) femal. normal.and dil.ted heart fail.re. In HF, a significant higher val.es of EDV (320 刡 79 vs. 126 刡 22 ml. P&amp;amp;l.;0.0001), ESV (255 刡 68 vs. 54 刡 12 ml. P&amp;amp;l.;0.00001) and l.wer val.es of EF (20 刡 7 vs. 58 刡 5 %) were found compared that of normal.control. There were significant difference on l. EDV and ESV between sex in both normal.and HF subjects.
