Background: The use of.serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein(hs-CRP) f.r cardiovascular risk prof.ling requires knowledge of.the distribution in dif.erent populations. We studied serum hs-CRP in a healthy Brazilian population, with no evidence of.heart disease, relative to gender and smoking status as well as other clinical and laboratory variables. Methods: 684 healthy Brazilian individuals, aged 14-74 years(mean 40-.6 years), 295 men(43.1%) and 389 women(56.9%), were enrolled between July 1998 and July 2001. The relationship between the log-transf.rmed hs-CRP, stratif.ed by gender and smoking status(non-smokers, smokers), and clinical and laboratory variables were analyzed using the Spearman correlation coef.icient and multiple linear regression. Results: In a multiple linear regression model age(β=1.0069, p=0.03), body mass index(BMI) (β=1.0093, pf.cation according to gender and smoking was able to disclose dif.erent interactions between these variables and hs-CRP. Variables signif.cantly correlated in each stratum were as f.llows: in smoker men, age(β=1.0236, p=0.04) and TC/HDL-C (β=1.2065, pf.uenced the concentration of.hs-CRP according to gender and smoking. In assessing the risk of.cardiovascular events in relation to serum hs-CRP level, stratif.cation by gender and smoking status is indicated.

Brazilian industry produces huge amounts of.tannery sludge as residues,which is of.en disposed by landf.lling or land ***,consecutive amendment of.such composted industrial wastes may cause shif.s in soil microbial biomass(SMB) and enzyme *** study aimed to evaluate SMB and enzyme activity af.er 3-year consecutive composted tannery sludge(CTS) amendment in tropical sandy *** amounts of.CTS(0.0,2.5,5.0,10.0,and 20.0 t ha^(-1)) were applied to a sandy *** C and N contents of.SMB,basal and substrate-induced respiration,respiratory quotient(qCO_2),and enzyme activities were determined in the soil samples collected af.er CTS amendment f.r 60 d at the third *** 3 years,signif.cant changes were f.und in soil microbial properties in response to dif.erent CTS amounts *** organic matter and Cr contents signif.cantly increased with increasing CTS *** and soil respiration peaked f.llowing amendment with 10.0 and 20.0 t ha-1 of.CTS,respectively,while qCO_2was not signif.cantly af.ected by CTS ***,soil enzyme activity decreased signif.cantly with increasing CTS *** CTS amendment f.r 3 years showed inconsistent and contrasting ef.ects on SMB and enzyme *** decrease in soil enzyme activities was proportional to a substantial increase in soil Cr concentration,with the latter exceeding the permitted concentrations by more than ***,our results suggest that a maximum CTS quantity of.5.0 t ha^(-1) can be applied annually to tropical sandy soil,without causing potential risks to SMB and enzyme activity.

Deciduous trees with high-density wood that occur in dry seasonal tropical regions respond to rainf.ll seasonality with synchrony in phenophases. However, they may exhibit interannual dif.erences in synchrony and intensity of.phenophases, as strategy f.r large variations in duration and intensity of.rainf.ll pulses. Nevertheless, it remains unknown how phenophases of.deciduous trees of.the Brazilian semi-arid region respond to rainf.ll variations. The phenology of.Cordia oncocalyx was monitored in deciduous thorny woodland （Caatinga）, f.om April 2009 to March 2011, and was correlated with rainf.ll, soil humidity, temperature, and photoperiod. The rainy years 2009 and 2011 exhibited higher duration of.rainf.ll pulses and lower f.equency of.interpulses, but in 2010 pulse duration and total rainf.ll were lower. Circular statistics showed leaf.f.ush f.llowed by f.owering and f.uiting in the rainy season, and leaf.f.ll and seed dispersal in the dry season.

Rationale: Co-inf.ction of.human immunodef.ciency virus(HIV) and Leishmania spp. has impact on clinical and therapeutic outcomes of.leishmaniases. Most studies do not present the identif.cation of.Leishmania species causing American tegumentary leishmaniasis in co-inf.ctions. In the Americas, Leishmania(L.) Viannia(V.) braziliensis and L.(V.) guyanensis have been identif.ed. Patient concerns: In this study, two cases of.American tegumentary leishmaniasis in patients inf.cted with HIV are described. Patients presented several lesions with rapid dissemination and mucosal involvement. Diagnosis: Disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by L. amazonensis was identif.ed by molecular test. Interventions: The patients were treated with conventional therapies f.r HIV inf.ction and American tegumentary leishmaniasis. Outcomes: In co-inf.ction, the clinical manif.stations are atypical and the treatment response can be impaired. Lessons: These cases show that HIV inf.ction impacts L. amazonensis inf.ction and point to the relevance of.identif.ing Leishmania species, which can lead to a better patient management.

The brown mussel Perna perna(Linnaeus,1758)is a valuable resource f.r aquaculture in tropical and subtropical coastal *** presents desirable characteristics f.r biomonitoring,including being sessile,widely distributed and abundant,and is a f.lter-f.eder able to accumulate several classes of.pollutants(e.g.,metals,hydrocarbons,among others).Mussels’biological responses to pollution exposure can be measured as biomarkers,which include alterations ranging f.om molecular to physiological levels,to estimate the degree of.environmental contamination and its ef.ects on *** f.ll review compiles two decades(2000–2020)of.literature concerning biological ef.ects on *** mussel caused by environmental pollutants(i.e.,metals,hydrocarbons,and emerging pollutants),considering environmental and f.rm-based *** markers related to mussels’oxidative status were ef.icient f.r the biomonitoring of.metals(i.e.,antioxidant enzymes associated with oxidative damage in biomolecules).Genotoxicity and cytotoxicity indicators(i.e.,comet,micronucleus,and neutral red assays)provided a depiction of.hydrocarbon *** neutral red assay gave a time-concentration cytotoxic response to a wide range of.pollutants,including emerging pollutants(e.g.,pharmaceuticals and biocides)and *** perna hemocyte parameters provided a usef.l approach f.r biocide *** paper summarizes usef.l biomarkers f.om molecular to physiological levels in this mussel species used to identif. and quantif. the degree of.coastal *** integrated biomarker analysis may provide a way to overcome possible biomarker variations and assess multi-polluted ***,it is necessary to investigate biomarker variations according to natural f.ctors(e.g.,season and gonad maturation stage)to standardize them f.r trustworthy biomonitoring.

Impact of.rainf.d and irrigated agriculture systems on soil carbon stock under dif.erent climate scenarios in the semi-arid region of.Brazil

Understanding the dynamics of.soil organic carbon(SOC) is of.f.ndamental importance in land use and management, whether in the current researches or in f.ture scenarios of.agriculture systems considering climate change. In order to evaluate SOC stock of.the three districts(Delmiro Gouveia, Pariconha, and Inhapi districts) in the semi-arid region of.Brazil in rainf.d and irrigated agriculture systems under dif.erent climate scenarios using the Century model, we obtained RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 climate scenarios derived f.om the Eta Regional Climate Model(Eta-Had GEM2-ES and Eta-MIROC5) f.om the National Institute f.r Space Research, and then input the data of.bulk density, p H, soil texture, maximum temperature, minimum temperature, and rainf.ll into the soil and climate f.les of.the Century model. The results of.this study showed that the Eta-Had GEM2-ES model was ef.ective in estimating air temperature in the f.ture period. In rainf.d agriculture system, SOC stock under the baseline scenario was lower than that under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 climate scenarios, while in irrigated agriculture system, SOC stock in the almost all climate scenarios(RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) and models(Eta-Had GEM2-ES and Eta-MIROC5) will increase by 2100. The results of.this study will help producers in the semi-arid region of.Brazil adopt specif.c agriculture systems aimed at mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.
