The continuous rise of CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere is reducing plant nutritional quality for herbivores and indirectly affects their *** whitefly(Bemisia tabaci,Gennadius)is a major worldwide pest of agricultural crops causing significant yield *** study investigated the plant‐mediated indirect effects of elevated CO2 on the feeding behavior and life history of *** Mediterranean *** were grown under elevated and ambient CO2 concentrations for 3 weeks after which plants were either used to monitor the feeding behavior of whiteflies using the Electrical Penetration Graph technique or to examine fecundity and fertility of *** leaf carbon,nitrogen,phenols and protein contents were also analyzed for each *** tabaci feeding on plants exposed to elevated CO2 showed a longer phloem ingestion and greater fertility compared to those exposed to ambient CO2 suggesting that *** is capable of compensating for the plant nutritional ***,this study looked at the transmission of the virus Tomato yellow leaf curl virus(Begomovirus)by *** exposing source and receptor tomato plants to ambient or elevated CO2 levels before or after virus transmission *** indicate that *** transmitted the virus at the same rate independent of the CO2 levels and plant ***,we conclude that *** Mediterranean species prevails over the difficulties that changes in CO2 concentrations may cause and it is predicted that under future climate change conditions,*** would continue to be considered a serious threat for agriculture worldwide.

Pectinases yeast production using grape skin as carbon source

Pectinases are used in Enology for some different utilities. Enzymatic preparations from moulds are a mixed of different enzymes with strong and unspe-cific activities. Some Saccharomyces cerevisiae pro-duce pectinases which can be used instead of com-mercial preparations. The objectives of this work were to study the enzyme secretion by one Saccharo-myces cerevisiae (CECT 11783) for growing on grape skin (industry oenological by-product) as carbon source. Preliminary experiments showed that the strain produced pectinases for growing on grape skin without any other carbon source. Statistical treat-ment (factorial design 25) was applied to evaluate the influences of related factors (agitation, temperature, presence of peptone and detergent in the medium and time of growth) Variables with the most significant interactions for pectinase production were agitation and nitrogen source concentration. Response surface methodology showed that a first order model was not adequate for results. Nevertheless, the built of a sec-ond order model offered a polynomial equation which surface predicted a maximum of activity (52.68 enzymatic units) for specific values of the studied variables (147.8 rpm of agitation and 15.9 g of pep-tone/ L culture medium).

Evolutionary Genomics of Weedy Rice in the USA

Red rice Is an Interfertlle, weedy form of cultivated rice （Oryza sativa L.） that competes aggressively with the crop In the southern US, reducing yields and contaminating harvests. No wild Oryza species occur In North America and the weed has been proposed to have evolved through multiple mechanisms, Including ＂de-domestication＂ of US crop cultlvars, accidental introduction of Asian weeds, and hybridization between US crops and Asian wild/weedy Oryza strains. The phenotype of US red rice ranges from ＂crop mimics＂, which share some domestication traits with the crop, to strains closely resembling Asian wild Oryza species. Assessments of genetic diversity have Indicated that many weed strains are closely related to Asian taxa （Including indica and aus rice varieties, which have never been cultivated In the US, and the Asian crop progenitor O. ruflpogon）, whereas others show genetic similarity to the tropical Japonica varieties cultivated In the southern US. Herein, we review what Is known about the evolutionary origins and genetic diversity of US red rice and describe an ongoing research project to further characterize the evolutionary genomlcs of this aggressive weed.

Nickel-rich transition-metal oxides are widely regarded as promising cathode materials for high-energydensity lithium-ion batteries for emerging electric vehicles. However, achieving high energy density in Ni-rich cathodes is accompanied by substantial safety and cycle-life obstacles. The major issues of Ni-rich cathodes at high working potentials are originated from the unstable cathode-electrolyte interface, while the underlying mechanism of parasitic reactions towards surface reconstructions of cathode materials is not well understood. In this work, we controlled the Li_(2)CO_(3) impurity content on LiNi_(0.83)Mn_(0.1)Co_(0.07)O_(2) cathodes using air, tank-air, and O_(2) synthesis environments. Home-built high-precision leakage current and on-line electrochemical mass spectroscopy experiments verify that Li_(2)CO_(3) impurity is a significant promoter of parasitic reactions on Ni-rich cathodes. The rate of parasitic reactions is strongly correlated to Li_(2)CO_(3) content and severe performance deterioration of Ni83 *** post-mortem characterizations via high-resolution transition electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profiles reveal that parasitic reactions promote more Ni reduction and O deficiency and even rock-salt phase transformation at the surface of cathode materials. Our observation suggests that surface reconstructions have a strong affiliation to parasitic reactions that create chemically acidic environment to etch away the lattice oxygen and offer the electrical charge to reduce the valence state of transition metal. Thus, this study advances our understanding on surface reconstructions of Nirich cathodes and prepares us for searching for rational strategies.

Comparation of the eutectic mixture of lidocaine/prilocain versus benzocaine gel in children

Objective: To compare the anesthetic effect of a non commercial eutectic mixture of 4% lidocaine/ prilocaine (PLO 4%) and 20% benzocaine gel (Hurricaine?), as topical anesthetic, prior to inferior alveolar nerve block and buccal infiltration anesthe-sia in 5-12 year old children. Study design: Infiltrative anesthesia was applied in 50 children, divided in two groups (n = 25) using PLO 4% and Hurricaine? as topical anesthesia prior to infiltration. Physical reac-tions were registered using the Sound-Eyes- Motor Scale. Physiological changes expressed by ar-terial pressure and heart rate. Subjective pain re-sponse was scored on a Facial Image Scale. Physical physiological and subjective response was related to the type of topical anesthetic, age and sex using χ2 and Mann-Whitney U test. Results: Physical responses to puncture were similar and localized in the state of comfort with both anesthetics. Girls showed more ocular response than boys. Subjective pain perception and physiological reactions showed no anesthetic- or sex-related differences, except for heart rate before and after the procedure which was significantly higher in girls. Conclusions: PLO 4% showed the same capacity as Hurricaine? in reducing pain response to needle puncture. Girls expressed more needle puncture-related pain than boys. The young children showed most prior comfort and less discomfort to the puncture than older children.

Impact of high-fat diet and vitamin D_3 supplementation on aortic stenosis establishment in waved-2 epidermal growth factor receptor mutant mice

Objective: The use of animal models of aortic stenosis(AS) remains essential to further elucidate its pathophysiology and to evaluate new therapeutic strategies. The waved-2 mouse AS model has been proposed;data have indicated that while aortic regurgitation(ar) is effectively induced, development of AS is *** aimed to evaluate the effect of high-fat diet(HFD) and vitamin D_3 supplementation in this ***: HFD and subcutaneous vitamin D_3 injections were initiated at the age of 6 weeks until the age of 6(n = 16, 6-month treatment group) and 9(n = 11, 9-month treatment group) months. Twelve waved-2 mice without supplementation were used as control. Echocardiography was performed at 3, 6 and 9 months. Blood serum analysis(calcium, 1,25(OH)_2D_3 and cholesterol), histology and immunohistochemistry(CD-31, CD-68 and osteopontin) were evaluated at the end of the experiment(6 or 9 months).Results: Total cholesterol and 1,25(OH)_2D_3 were significantly increased relative to the control group. HFD and vitamin D_3 supplementation did result in improvements to the model, since AS was only detected in 6(15.3%) mice(2 in the 3 groups) and ar was developed in the remaining animals. Echocardiographic parameters, fibrosis, thickness, inflammation and valvular calcification, were not significantly different between the 6-month treatment and control groups. Similar results were also observed in the 9-month treatment ***: These results suggest that HFD and vitamin D_3 supplementation have no effect in the waved-2 mouse model. This model essentially mimics ar and rarely AS. Further studies are needed to find a reliable animal model of AS.

<i>SEPT10</i>Expression in Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Correlation with Clinical and Biological Prognostic Factors

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is characterized by a highly variable clinical course. Microarray studies allowed highlight genes differentially expressed in this pathology. In this study, we have evaluated the prognostic significance of SEPT10 expression in CLL patients. Results were correlated with immunoglobulin heavy-chain variable (IGHV) genes mutational status, genomic rearrangements and clinical parameters. SEPT10 mRNA levels were determined by quantitative real-time PCR in 70 newly diagnosed CLL patients consecutively referred to our Institution. A wide heterogeneity for SEPT10 expression was found. Gene upregulation was observed in 18.5% of cases. The univariate analysis showed a positive association between gen expression and platelet count (p 0.0001) and a negative correlation with hemoglobin levels (p = 0.0094). Although no significant differences were observed, mean treatment free survival was shorter in patients with high expression (31 months) with respect to those with low mRNA levels (72 months). Cases with abnormal karyotypes had increased expression compared to those with normal karyotypes and no association between gene expression and FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) risk groups and IGHV mutational status was found. Cases using IGHV3-23 gene rearrangement had low SEPT10 expression. Our results showed an association between SEPT10 expression and features of adverse outcome but without independent prognostic value. The study of SEPT10 expression may be important for a better understanding of disease heterogeneity, adding further information to those provided by established prognostic factors.
