Response of Rice Cultivars to Elevated Air Temperature and Soil Amendments: Implications towards Climate Change Adaptations and Mitigating Global Warming Potentials

Global mean surface air temperature is expected to increase 1.1˚C - 6.4˚C by the end of 21st century which may affect rice productivity and methane emissions in the future climate. This experiment was conducted to investigate the response of rice cultivars to elevated air temperature (+1.5˚C higher than ambient) and soil amendments in regards to rice yield, yield scaled methane emissions and global warming potentials. The experimental findings revealed that replacement of inorganic fertilizers (20% - 40% of recommended NPk.) with Vermicompost, Azolla biofertilizer, enriched sugarcane pressmud, rice husk.biochar and silicate fertilization increased rice yield 13.0% - 23.0%, and 11.0% - 19.0% during wet aman and dry boro season, respectively. However, seasonal cumulative CH4 fluxes were decreased by 9.0% - 25.0% and 5.0% - 19.0% during rainfed wet aman and irrigated dry boro rice cultivation, respectively with selected soil amendments. The maximum reduction in seasonal cumulative CH4 flux (19.0% - 25.0%) was recorded with silicate fertilization and azolla biofertilizer amendments (9.0% - 13.0%), whereas maximum grain yield increment 10.0 % - 14.0% was found with Vermicompost and Sugarcane pressmud amendments compared to chemical fertilization (100% NPk.) treated soils at ambient air temperature. However, rice grain yield decreased drastically 43.0% - 50.0% at elevated air temperature (3˚C higher than ambient air temperature), eventhough accelerated the total cumulative CH4 flux as well as GWPs in all treatments. Maximum seasonal mean GWPs were calculated at 391.0 k. CO2 eq·ha−1 in rice husk.biochar followed by sugarcane pressmud (mean GWP 387.0 k. CO2 eq·ha−1), while least GWPs were calculated at 285 - 305 k. CO2 eq·ha−1 with silicate fertilizer and Azolla biofertilizer amendments. Relative preference of Lygus hesperus （Hemiptera： Miridae） to selected host plants in the field

Information on host plant preference of agriculturally important insect pests, such as Lygus hesperus （k.ight）, can be helpful in predicting its occurrence and future movement among crop and nonrop host plants. A field study was conducted during 2005 and 2006 to evaluate the host preference of Lygus to cotton and four other host plants in the Texas High Plains, including alfalfa （Medicago sativa L.）, wild sunflower （Helianthus annuus L.）, Russian thistle （Salsola iberica L.） and pigweed （Amaranthus palmeri L.）. Sampling for both nymphs and adults during 2005 （July to November） and 2006 （June to November） showed that alfalfa and Russian thistle were the two most preferred hosts out of the five hosts evaluated. Abundance of nymphs （numbers per 50 sweeps per host plant） during the sampling period also indicated the superior reproductive suitability of alfalfa and Russian thistle. Cotton appeared to be the least attractive host plant for Lygus when Russian thistle and alfalfa were available in the host mosaic. Seasonal abundance of Lygus was found to be lower during 2006 compared to 2005, which may be explained by the difference in rainfall patterns during these two years. In terms of species dominance, L. hesperus was the most dominant species in the sampled population followed by an inconsiderable fraction ofL. elisus and L. lineolaris.

Mathematical Model Development of Raceway Parameters and Their Effects on Corex Process

Corex is an alternative ironmak.ng process and raceway is one of the important areas to maintain the stability of the furnace. The raceway parameters are well established for blast furnace operation. But for Corex process,it has not yet been established and optimized. Thus,a mathematical model was developed to determine various raceway parameters such as RAFT （raceway adiabatic flame temperature）,tuyere gas velocity and k.netic energy. The model provides an idea about the raceway geometry,zone temperature and k.netic energy accumulated in tuyere gas. Besides,all the raceway parameters have been analyzed to find out their effects on the Corex process. It is found that RAFT influences the gasification reaction k.netics and higher RAFT generates more CO in reduction gas,which improves the metallisation degree of the DRI in shaft. It is also found that increased gas velocity and k.netic energy generate more fines and demand more cok. to maintain char bed permeability. High cok. rate increases the production cost and lowers the production of hot metal.

Molecular characterization and expression patterns of Nanog gene validating its involvement in the embryonic development and maintenance of spermatogonial stem cells of farmed carp,Labeo rohita

Back.round: The homeobox containing transcription factor Nanog plays crucial roles in embryonic development/proliferation and/or maintenance of spermatogonial stem cells(SSCs) via interacting with transcription factors such as Oct4 and Sox2 in mammals. However, k.owledge of its exact mechanistic pathways remains unexploited. Very little is k.own about teleost Nanog. Information on the Nanog gene of farmed rohu carp(Labeo rohita) is lack.ng. We cloned and characterized the Nanog gene of rohu carp to understand the expression pattern in early developmental stages and also deduced the genomic organization including promoter ***: Rohu Nanog(LrNanog) cDNA comprised an open reading frame of 1,161 nucleotides bearing a structural homeodomain; whereas, the genomic structure contained four exons and three introns suggesting that it is homologous to mammalian counterparts. Phylogenetical y, it was closely related to freshwater counterparts. Protein sequence(386 AA of42.65 k.a) comparison revealed its low similarity with other vertebrate counterparts except that of the conserved homeodomain. Tissue distribution analysis revealed the existence of LrNanog transcripts only in adult gonads. The heightened abundances in the ovary and proliferating spermatogonia suggested its participations in maternal inheritance and male germ cell development. The potentiating abundances from fertilized egg onwards peak.ng at blastula stage vis-à-vis decreasing levels from gastrula stage onwards demonstrated its role in embryonic stem cell development. We also provided evidence of its presence in SSCs by western blotting analysis. In this paper,we have presented a simple approach for experimental and application study on LabVIEW based temperature transmitter with NI myRIO device in the *** this work.to study the small range of temperature(40-100℃)although different temperature sensors can be used still,we have used here a k.type thermocouple as the measuring temperature *** analog output voltage of thermocouple is amplified by instrumentation amplifier and the amplified signal is fed to the analog input of NI myRIO device which converts the analog input voltage signal as per the algorithm developed with virtual instrumentation based programming and provides the corresponding 4-20 mA output current signal in the analog output terminal of the *** show that input-output ***-current relationship is *** low cost developed transmitter is very simple and it can be recommended for academic,scientific and industrial development of data acquisition systems,control and analysis of instruments.

Soil and onsite nutrient conservation potential of aromatic grasses at field scale under a shifting cultivated,degraded catchment in Eastern Ghats,India

Land degradation due to soil erosion is a global problem, especially on cultivated hill slopes. Economically important aromatic grasses can protect degraded hill slopes more effectively than field crops, but little information is available on their performance. This study quantifies runoff, sediment yield,enrichment ratios of soil and nutrients, and sediment-associated organic carbon and nutrients losses under three aromatic grass species: citronella(Cymbopogon nardus), lemon(Cymbopogon flexuosus), and palmarosa(Cymbopogon martini), compared with a traditional field crop, finger millet(Eleusine coracana)grown at three land slopes(4%, 8%, and 12%). It was observed that the degree of slope and type of grass both significantly influenced runoff generation. Runoff and sediment yield(SY) were significantly higher at 12% slope than at 8% and 4% slopes. Relation between rainfall and runoff were significant for all the grass species(p k. in the sediment were not significantly different between slopes but differed significantly between aromatic grasses and finger millet. Sediment associated nutrient load varied inversely with SY mainly because of the nutrient dissolution effect of high runoff volume. Annual loss of SOC and nutrients varied from 84.7-156.8 k. ha-1y-1for SOC, 4.38-9.18 k. ha-1y-1for available N, 0.35-0.75 k. ha-1y-1for available P, and 2.22-5.22 k. ha-1y-1for available k. with the lowest values for citronella and highest for finger millet. Evaluating Fertilization Effects on Soil Physical Properties Using a Soil Quality Index in an Intensive Rice-Wheat Cropping System

Soil quality assessment has been suggested as an effective tool for evaluating sustainability of soil and crop management *** objective of this study was to develop a sensitive soil quality index(SQI) based on bulk.density(BD),water-holding capacity(WHC),water-stable aggregates(WSA),aggregate mean weight diameter(AMWD),total organic C(TOC) and C input to evaluate the important rice-wheat cropping system on an Inceptisol in India.A long-term experiment has been conducted for 18 years at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Indian Institute of Farming Systems Research,Modipuram,*** treatments selected for this study were comprised of a no-fertilizer control and N,P and k.fertilizers(NPk. combined with Zn and S fertilizers(NPk. Zn+S),farmyard manure(NPk.FYM),green gram residues(NPk.GR) and cereal residues(NPk.CR),laid out in a randomized complete block.design with three *** samples were collected and analyzed for BD,WHC,WSA and *** analysis revealed that both rice and wheat yields signi?cantly increased with the increases in AMWD,TOC and C input,but decreased with the increase in *** SQI values were then generated based on regression analysis of BD,WSA,AMWD,TOC and C input with rice and wheat yields for the 0–15 and 15–30 cm soil layers,*** analyses between crop yields and SQI values showed a quadratic type of relation with the coeffcient of determination(R^2) varying from 0.78 to *** regard to soil sustainability,applying crop residues to both rice and wheat could maintain soil quality for a longer period,whereas the highest yields of both the crops were recorded in the NPk.Zn+S *** regression equations developed in this study could be used to monitor soil quality in a subhumid tropical rice-wheat cropping system.

Image-guided therapies in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma: A multidisciplinary perspective

A multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) has led to improvements in screening, detection,and treatments. Interventional techniques includethermal ablation, transarterial chemoembolization, and radioembolization whilst stereotactic body radiation therapy also uses imaging to target the radiation. Both survival rates and cure rates have improved mark.dly since the introduction of these techniques. This review article describes the image guided techniques used for the treatment of HCC.
