Cognitive and Functional Profiles in Mild-to-Moderate Alzheimer’s Disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment Compared to Healthy Elderly

Background: Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease (AD) are clinically distinct but impact cognitive and functional ability similarly. Comprehensive assessment of cognitive and functional deficits may prove useful in informing differential diagnosis in early stages of dementia and in informing endpoint selection in therapeutic AD trials. Objective: The objective of this study was to characterize patterns of cognitive and functional impairment in aMCI and mild-to-moderate AD subjects compared to cognitively intact healthy elderly (HE). Methods: Thirty-one healthy elderly, 20 aMCI and 19 AD participants were administered a cognitive test battery that included the ADAS-Cog and functional assessments. Z-scores were calculated for all endpoints based on the HE reference group. Results: Cognitive deficits were observed in AD and aMCI participants relative to the referent group. On average, aMCI participants performed 1 - 2 standard deviations below HE on cognitive tests, and AD participants performed 2 - 3 standard deviations below HE. Domain-specific functional deficits among AD participants (z- score -0.4 to -6.4) were consistently greater than those of aMCI participants (z-score 0 to -1.7). Conclusion: This study provides further support for comprehensive assessment and monitoring of cognitive and functional domain scores in the diagnosis and treatment of aMCI and mild AD. Domain-specific cognitive scores may be more useful than composite scores in characterizing impairment and decline. Measuring domains such as attention, processing speed and executive function may increase the sensitivity of detecting disease progression and therapeutic effects, particularly in mild-moderate AD where memory decline may be too slow to detect drug effects during a typical clinical trial.

Artificial neural network(ANN)potentials enable the efficient large-scale atomistic modeling of complex materials with near firstprinciples *** molecular dynamics simulations,accurate energies and interatomic forces are a prerequisite,but training ANN potentials simultaneously on energies and forces from electronic structure calculations is computationally ***,we introduce an efficient alternative method for the training of ANN potentials on energy and force information,based on an extrapolation of the total energy via a Taylor *** translating the force information to approximate energies,the quadratic scaling with the number of atoms exhibited by conventional force-training methods can be avoided,which enables the training on reference datasets containing complex atomic structures.

The energy efficiency of a building depends on building envelope *** results presented in this paper are the first of a long-term building envelope research project at the Alternative Village at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg,Manitoba,*** test buildings were constructed using the following systems:two wood frames with fiberglass batt insulation and dense pack cellulose,one polyurethane structural insulated panels(PUR SIP),and two with the Stay in place PVC concrete form building system using 102mm and 204mm of concrete externally insulated with 102mm of expanded polystyrene *** of the buildings had a common foundation and roof system with a footprint of 23.8 *** door tests were conducted to determine air *** structure was heated with an electrical resistance heater and maintained at a constant internal *** thermal gradient through the wall and power consumption were *** study period discussed in this report represents the main heating season from October 2011 to april 2012 consisting of 209 *** on the power consumption,the PUR SIP consumed the least at 2498 kWh,while the 204 mm Stay in place PVC concrete form building used the most at 2898 kWh for the same time *** thermal gradient through the cross section of the wood frame structures was compared through the cavity insulation and at the *** was found that the cellulose building provided better thermal resistance along the stud when compared to the fiberglass batt insulation.

Additive effect of cerebral atrophy on cognition in dementia-free elderly with cerebrovascular disease

Objective To explore the additive effect of neurodegenerative diseases,measured by atrophy,on neurocognitive function in Asian dementia-free elderly with cerebrovascular disease(CeVD).Methods The present study employed a cross-sectional design and was conducted between 2010 and 2015 among community-dwelling elderly participants recruited into the *** participants were evaluated with an extensive neuropsychological battery and *** weighted CeVD burden scale comprising markers of both small-and large-vessel diseases was applied,with a score of≥2,indicating significant CeVD *** atrophy(CA)and medial temporal atrophy(MTA)were graded using the global cortical atrophy scale and Schelten's scale,*** and domain-specific(attention,executive function,language,visuomotor speed,visuoconstruction,visual memory,and verbal memory)neurocognitive performance was measured using a locally validated neuropsychological battery(Vascular Dementia Battery,VDB).Results A total of 819 dementia-free participants were included in the *** none-mild CeVD subjects,there was no significant difference in the global cognitive performance across atrophy groups(no atrophy,CA,and CA+MTA).However,in moderate-severe CeVD subjects,CA+MTA showed significantly worse global cognitive performance compared with those with CA alone(mean difference=?0.35,95%CI?0.60 to?0.11,p=0.002)and those without atrophy(mean difference=?0.46,95%CI?0.74 to?0.19,p<0.001,p<0.001).In domain-specific cognitive performance,subjects with CA+MTA performed worse than other groups in visual memory(p=0.005),executive function(p=0.001)and visuomotor speed(p<0.001)in moderate-severe CeVD but not in none-mild *** and relevance Atrophy and moderate-severe CeVD burden showed an additive effect on global and domain-specific cognitive *** study highlights the importance of investigating the mechanisms of clinico-pathological interactions between neurodegen

The characteristics of oasis urban expansion and drive mechanism analysis:a case study on Ganzhou District in Hexi Corridor,China

Ganzhou District is an oasis city in the Zhangye Municipality of Gansu Province, China. Based on multi-temporal TM and ETM satellite remote sensing data in 1985, 1996, 2000, and 2012, and by using corrected figures of land use status over the same periods, the spatial area of Ganzhou District since 1985 was extracted with statistical methods, and urban spatial expansion was measured by quantitative research methods. The characteristics of spatial expansion of Ganzhou District were analyzed by urban expansion rate, expansion intensity index, compactness, fractal dimension, and the city center shift method. The results showed that the built-up area of Ganzhou District increased by 3.46 times during 1985-2012. The expansion in 1985 1996 was slow, during 1996 2000 it was rapid, and during 2000-2012 it was at a high speed. This city mainly expanded to the northeast and northwest. Government decision making had a decisive influence on urban expansion. Initially the expansion was uniform, but later the local tfansportation, economy, resources, population, and national policies factors had an obvious influence on urban expansion.

Comparing the effects of isoleucine and leucine supplementation at different dosage on the growth and metabolism of Torulaspora delbrueckii Biodiva during soy whey fermentation

Soy whey is a liquid by-product generated from tofu production and it is often discarded as wastewater after it is *** studies have shown that out of the three branched-chain amino acids,isoleucine was found to have an inhibitory effect on Torulaspora delbrueckii Biodiva during soy whey *** this study,a comparison between isoleucine and leucine was carried out to ascertain how these two structural isomers could affect the growth and metabolism of *** Biodiva at various concentrations(40,80 and 160 mg nitrogen/L).In general,amino acid supplementation sped up the fermentation process relative to unsupplemented *** though glycerol and ethanol production were enhanced in all isoleucine supplemented samples in comparison to unsupplemented samples,isoleucine supplementation resulted in slower yeast growth at day 1 and slower sucrose hydrolysis regardless of the concentration *** for leucine supplementation,there was no impact on yeast growth,glycerol and ethanol production but sucrose hydrolysis was enhanced in comparison to the unsupplemented *** isoleucine and leucine supplementation resulted in corresponding increase in active amyl alcohol and isoamyl alcohol production respectively,but isoleucine had a stimulating effect on increasing the production of other higher alcohols while leucine had an inhibitory effect on the production of other higher ***,even though isoleucine and leucine are structural isomers with the positional difference of only one methyl group,the impact on the yeast metabolism and growth is visibly different.

目的:以全球视角分析儿童青少年有氧耐力的变化趋势及相关影响因素,为提高儿童青少年的有氧耐力提供科学依据。方法:在Web of Science、PubMed、ESBCO、中国知网(CNKI)4个数据库检索,检索截止日期为2020年4月30日。结果:30篇有氧耐力相关研究被纳入分析,共纳入了15个国家6613795名5~19岁的儿童青少年。53年来,有35324名儿童青少年的有氧耐力呈现上升趋势,6566338名呈现下降的趋势,12133名不变。我国儿童青少年有氧耐力:1985—1989年,所有年龄段儿童青少年的有氧耐力呈现小幅上升的趋势;1989—2009年,所有年龄段儿童青少年的有氧耐力开始较大幅度下降;2009—2014年,大部分年龄段呈现出止跌回升的趋势。结论:儿童青少年有氧耐力呈现持续下降的趋势,提示需要定期监控儿童青少年的有氧耐力,并采取积极主动的干预措施以及政策方针。同时,应注重微观、中观、宏观三个层面的协同发展,有效提高儿童青少年的有氧耐力。
