With the abundance and good corrosion resistance of aluminium, hot-dip technique was used to prepare the recycled Al with 8.2 mass% Mg alloy coating on low carbon steel substrates. Electrochemical behavior of this coating was investigated by an- odic polarization and open circuit potential measurement. Its microstructure and composition were observed by scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, respectively. The long lasting corrosion performance of coated steels was in- vestigated under the salt fog spray test. From anodic polarization curves and open circuit potential, recycled Al with 8.2 mass% Mg coating performed adequate sacrificial ability. At 0.40 V, current density of recycled Al with 8.2 mass% Mg alloy coating was about 200 000 times higher than that of pure recycled Al coating, and was about 0.5 times lower than that of Zn coating. The microstruc- ture of recycled Al with 8.2 mass% Mg alloy coating on the steel substrate consisted ofAl3Mg2, Al-Fe intermetallic compound and Al matrix. The results from salt fog spray test showed that recycled Al with 8.2 mass% Mg alloy coated steel had similar corrosion resistance ability to Zn coated steel.

Sildenafil citrate is a potent and selective phosphodiesterase-5inhibitor. It is effectively used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. The drug is rapidly absorbed and pharmacologically acts within30 min to 1 h after oral administration. However, it has a relatively low absolute bioavailability of 41%because its limited solubility in water is the major problem (1)To improve the oral bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs.

Intravenous transplantation of mouse embryonic stem cells attenuates demyelination in an ICR outbred mouse model of demyelinating diseases

Induction of demyelination in the central nervous system （CNS） of experimental mice using cuprizone is widely used as an animal model for studying the pathogenesis and treatment of demyelination. How- ever, different mouse strains used result in different pathological outcomes. Moreover, because current medicinal treatments are not always effective in multiple sclerosis patients, so the study of exogenous cell transplantation in an animal model is of great importance. The aims of the present study were to establish an alternative ICR outbred mouse model for studying demyelination and to evaluate the effects of intrave- nous cell transplantation in the present developed mouse model. Two sets of experiments were conducted. Firstly, ICR outbred and BALB/c inbred mice were fed with 0.2% cuprizone for 6 consecutive weeks; then demyelinating scores determined by luxol fast blue stain or immunolabeling with CNPase were evaluated. Secondly, attenuation of demyelination in ICR mice by intravenous injection of mES cells was studied. Scores for demyelination in the brains of ICR mice receiving cell injection （mES cells-injected group） and vehicle （sham-inoculated group） were assessed and compared. The results showed that cuprizone signifi- cantly induced demyelination in the cerebral cortex and corpus callosum of both ICR and BALB/c mice. Additionally, intravenous transplantation of mES cells potentially attenuated demyelination in ICR mice compared with sham-inoculated groups. The present study is among the earliest reports to describe the cuprizone-induced demyelination in ICR outbred mice. Although it remains unclear whether mES cells or trophic effects from mES cells are the cause of enhanced remyelination, the results of the present study may shed some light on exogenous cell therapy in central nervous system demyelinating diseases.

AIM: To determine the effect of tetrahydrocurcumin (THC) on tumor angiogenesis compared with curcumin (CUR) by using both in vitro and in vivo models of human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (HepG2). METHODS: The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was used for testing the anti-proliferating activities of CUR and THC. In male BALB/c nude mice, 2 × 106 human HepG2 cells were inoculated onto a dorsal skin-fold chamber. One day after HepG2 inoculation, the experimental groups were fed oral daily with CUR or THC (300 mg/kg or 3000 mg/kg). On d 7, 14 and 21, the tumor microvasculature was observed using fluorescence videomicroscopy and capillary vascularity (CV) was measured. RESULTS: Pathological angiogenic features including microvascular dilatation, tortuosity, and hyper-permeability were observed. CUR and THC could attenuate these pathologic features. In HepG2-groups, the CV were significantly increased on d 7 (52.43%), 14 (69.17%), and 21 (74.08%), as compared to controls (33.04%,P < 0.001). Treatment with CUR and THC resulted in significant decrease in the CV (P < 0.005 and P < 0.001, respectively). In particular, the anti-angiogenic effects of CUR and THC were dose-dependent manner. However, the beneficial effect of THC treatment than CUR was observed, in particular, from the 21 d CV (44.96% and 52.86%, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: THC expressed its anti-angiogenesis without any cytotoxic activities to HepG2 cells even at the highest doses. It is suggested that anti-angiogenic properties of CUR and THC represent a common potential mechanism for their anti-cancer actions.

Effects of Heat Stress at Vegetative and Reproductive Stages on Spikelet Fertility

Seed-setting rate, yield components and grain quality traits of 169 accessions from an exotic rice germplasm were tested under high temperatures from 40 oC to 45 oC for 6 h during the daytime at the vegetative and reproductive stages, respectively. The results showed that heat stress significantly decreased the seed-setting rate of all the accessions, but the heat stress effects varied among accessions. Based on the decreases in seed-setting rate at high temperatures, N22 was the most tolerant, followed by AUS17, M9962, SONALEE and AUS16. Moreover, the reductions in seed-setting rate and yield under heat stress were more serious at the vegetative stage （45 d before heading） than at the booting stage （15 d before heading）. In addition, heat stress also affected grain quality, especially by conferring chalkiness to most of the accessions, but SONALEE did not change much. The heat-tolerant accessions identified here and the phenotype protocols developed could be used in future genetic studies and breeding programmes focused on heat tolerance.

To study structure-activity relationship of rhodomyrtone against Gram-positive bacteria, structural modification of rhodo- myrtone was carded out to afford its 10 analogues. All compounds were assayed for their antibacterial potency using broth microdilution method. The results indicated that rhodomyrtone exhibited higher antibacterial activity against al! Gram-positive bacteria than its analogues, with the exception of rhodomyrtone 6,8-diacetate （3） and oxime analogues 6 and 7 which demonstrated similar activity as the parent compound against Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus epidermidis with minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration ranged from 1 to 4 ~g/mL and 2 to 4 ~g/mL, respectively. In contrast, all analogues displayed no activity against Acinetobacter baumannii. Hydroxyl and ketone groups of rhodomyrtone were elucidated to be essential for the antibacterial property.

AIM： To investigate the ability of hexahydrocurcumin （HHC） to enhance 5-fluorouracil （5-FU） in inhibiting the growth of HT-29 cells by focusing on cyclooxygenase （COX）-2 expression.METHODS： Antiproliferative effects of HHC and 5-FU, alone and in combination, on growth of HT-29 human colon cancer cells were assessed using 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide （MTT） reduction assay. In combinationtreatment, low doses of 5-FU were used combined with various concentrations of HHC to minimize the toxic- ity and side effects of 5-FU. The therapeutic effects of these drugs on down-regulation of COX-2 mRNA and protein expression were examined using semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction （RT-PCR） and Western blotting analysis.RESULTS： Ml-I- reduction assay indicated that HHC alone markedly decreased the viability of HT-29 human colon cancer cells compared to control. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR analysis indicated that HHC is a selective COX-2 inhibitor. This finding was supported by the ob- servation that HHC significantly down-regulates COX-2 mRNA expression compared to the control （control： 100.05% ± 0.03% vs HHC： 61.01% ± 0.35%, P 〈 0.05） but does not alter COX-1 mRNA. In combined treatment, addition of HHC to a low dose of 5-FU exerts a synergistic effect against the growth of HT-29 cells by markedly reducing cell viability to a greater degree than monotherapy. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR indicated that 5-FU at the concentration of 5 pmol/L in combina- tion with HHC at the concentration of 25 pmol/L signifi- cantly down-regulates COX-2 mRNA expression when compared with values in cells treated with 5-FU or HHC alone （HHC ＋ 5-FU： 31.93% ± 5.69%, 5-FU： 100.66% ± 4.52% vs HHC： 61.01% ±0.35%, P 〈 0.05）.CONCLUSION： HHC together with 5-FU exerts a synergistic effect and may prove chemotherapeutically useful in treating human colon cancer.

Sildenafil citrate is a highly selective phosphodiesterase-5(PDE-5)*** is used for treatment of erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension[1].Sildenafil citrate is categorized in BCS class 2 so it is developed as a citrate salt to increase water solubility(4.1 mg/mL)[2].The conventional product has been developed as a tablet dosage *** is rapidly absorbed after oral administration,but gives a relatively low oral bioavailability of about 40%and late onset of action[2].Dry foam formulation technology is an alternative approach to overcome such a problem.

Screening for Spikelet Fertility and Validation of Heat Tolerance in a Large Rice Mutant Population

A total of 10 000 M4 individuals in Jao Hom Nil (JHN) mutant population was treated with high temperature (40 ℃ to 45 ℃) during the day time (6 h) from the booting to the harvesting stages, and ambient temperature (33 ℃ to 35℃) was used as the control. The results of screening and yield trials found that the mutant line M9962 had a high spikelet fertility of 78% under heat stress. In addition, the other mutant lines, including M3181 and M7988, had a spikelet fertility of approximately 70%. However, the JHN wild type, Sin Lek, RD15 and RD33 had very low spikelet fertility of 34%, 14%, 9% and 4%, respectively. The lower spikelet fertility at an elevated temperature resulted in a dramatic decrease of filled grain and contributed to a loss in 100-grain weight. M9962 is a potential genetic stock for use in a heat tolerance breeding programme. In addition, spikelet fertility at high temperature was representative of heat tolerance and can be used as a screening trait for heat tolerance during the reproductive phase on a large scale.
