Capacitating local governments for the digital earth vision:lessons learnt from the role of municipalities in the South African spatial data infrastructure

The Digital Earth vision foresees the availability and accessibility of geospatial information to achieve the goals of sustainable development,economic growth and social *** the case of urban areas,upto-date geospatial information is essential for managing a city towards achieving these *** rapid shift from rural to urban areas globally puts pressure on local governments and they often struggle to find and organise the resources required to collect and maintain geospatial information that can help to address urban growth challenges.A spatial data infrastructure(SDI)can facilitate the availability and accessibility of geospatial information towards addressing national objectives,however,the involvement of local governments in an SDI can be a *** this paper,we critique the role of municipalities against the backdrop of the developments of the South African SDI(SASDI)to *** critique identifies five high-level shortcomings of the SASDI that have led to the limited participation of *** on the shortcomings,we provide recommendations for capacitating municipalities through SASDI so that the Digital Earth vision can also be achieved for *** recommendations are aimed at involving the local sphere of government in a national SDI and are equally applicable to other countries.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the most common neurodegenerative movement disorder in the elderly. As the pathogenesis of PD is still not fully understood, medications with the capacity of halting the disease progression are currently unavailable. The discovery of genes that are causative for, or increase susceptibility to PD is pivotal for the development of novel therapeutic approaches, as they are critical for the onset of PD and the molecular pathways underlying its pathogenesis. By reviewing relevant data, we discuss causative genes, and those associated with PD susceptibility and quantitative traits. Through Gene Ontology database and STRING analysis, we emphasize the roles of inorganic cation transmembrane transport pathways and hypothalamic pituitary thyroid axis, in addition to the established roles of inflammation/oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in the pathogenesis of PD. It is hoped these insights 1) untangle the clinical complex presentations of PD, 2) reveal the interwoven molecular network leading to PD, and 3) identify critical molecular targets to facilitate novel PD drug discovery, with a view to providing improved consultation and personalized medicine for patients with PD in the future.

Voids in the Hall Effect;Excitons in HiT<sub>c</sub>

The outstanding difference between high temperature superconductors and low temperature superconductors is the sign of the Hall coefficient, properly understood. Since the Lorentz force acts on particles, not voids nor immobile ions, we propose that the experimental positive coefficient is due to dispersion dynamics in valence bands, i.e. on electrons with positive charge/mass ratio, but with negative charge and negative effective mass. In HiT ccompounds, anionic and cationic doping creates holes that substitute for the lattice distortions that bind cooper pairs in metallic superconductors such as Nb. In both types of superconductor, the conventional notion of antiparallel spins S = 0, with paired wave vectors k and -k, is maintained;but in the ceramics “holes” h, produced by chemical doping and measured in the normal state, are available to bond super-conducting Boson pairs via h−or h02?excitons.
