Prediction of net energy of feeds for broiler chickens

Net energy(NE)enables the prediction of more accurate feed energy values by taking into account the heat increment which is approximately 25%of apparent metabolizable energy(AME)in ***,application of NE in poultry industry has not been practiced *** predict the NE values of broiler diets,23 diets were prepared by using 13 major ingredients(wheat,corn,paddy rice,broken rice,cassava pellets,full-fat soybean,soybean meal,canola meal,animal protein,rice bran,wheat bran,palm kernel meal and palm kernel oil).The diets were formulated in order to meet the birds'requirements and get a wide range of chemical compositions(on DM basis;33.6%to 55.3%for starch;20.8%to 28.4%for CP,2.7%to 10.6%for ether extract[EE]and 7.0%to 17.2%for NDF),with low correlations between these nutrients and low correlations between the inclusion levels of ingredients allowing for the calculation of robust prediction equations of energy values of diets or *** diets were fed to Ross 308 broilers raised in 12 open-circuit respiratory chambers from 18 to 23 d of age(4 birds per cage)and growth performance,diet AME content and heat production were measured,and dietary NE values were *** trial was conducted on a weekly basis with 12 diets measured each week(1per chamber),1 of the 23 diets(reference diet)being measured each *** diet was tested at least *** total,235 energy balance data values were available for the final *** performance,AME(15.3 MJ/kg DM on average)and AME/GE(79.4%on average)values were as *** NE/AME value averaged 76.6%and was negatively influenced by CP and NDF and positively by EE in connection with efficiencies of AME provided by CP,EE and starch for NE of 73%,87%and 81%,*** best prediction equation was:NE=(0.815×AME)—(0.026×CP)+(0.020×EE)—(0.024×NDF)with NE and AME as MJ/kg DM,and CP,EE and NDF as%of *** NE prediction equations from this study agree with other recently reported equation

Sonographic Evaluation of Pleural Effusion

Background: Although at times small amounts of pleural fluid is detected on the lateral decubitus chest radiograph, this may be impossible to obtain in severely ill patients. Because of its ready availability and ability for bedside imaging, ultrasonography has become a crucial imaging modality not only in detecting the presence of pleural fluid but also as a guide to aspiration. Aims: To sonographically determine the nature of pleural effusions. To analyze predictability of both benign and malignant pleural effusions and to study statistical value of various ultrasound characteristics in differentiating exudative and transudative as well as benign and malignant effusions in correlation with thoracocentesis. Material and Methods: Sonographic feature as well as fluid cytology was evaluated. Following categorization into exudates or transudate as well as benign or malignant the diagnosis was then correlated biochemically. Results: Transudates were anechoic, while an anechoic effusion may be either a transudate or an exudate. Complex septation, internal echoes, thickened pleura or homogeneously echogenic patterns were always exudates. Sonographic findings of pleural nodules and associated parenchymal lesions in the lung and liver were indicative of malignancy. Conclusions: Ultrasound in addition to being highly sensitive for pleural effusion also aided in characterizing the nature and minimizing the complications during thoracocentesis. Pleural effusions were categorized into exudates and transudate as well as benign and malignant with a certain degree of confidence based on sonographic findings.

The chemical communication system in Drosophila melanogaster Meigen,1830 plays a major role in courtship and consists of the male-specific cis-Vaccenyl acetate and sex-specific contact pheromones,cuticular hydrocarbons(CHC),which build up during ontogeny(first 4 days).They replace longer CHCs,common to both sexes and present only after the imaginal eclosion.A detailed quantitative description of the evolution of cuticular unsaturated hydrocarbons with age is presented here for males and females of different *** strains,which have been bred in well controlled *** appear in both sexes at around 12 h,before female *** present paper argues that this is likely linked to the switching on of a new set of ***,which is more abundant in females than in males during this critical period,might control this *** behavioral studies show that whereas female of all ages trigger early mature male courtship steps like wing vibration,only females older than 1 day trigger late courtship steps like attempted *** supports the hypothesis that late male courtship steps might be triggered by the CHCs,which build up after this age,especially female-specific(Z,Z)-7,11-and(Z,Z)-5,9-dienes.

It has been over forty years since jean Chesneaux published his edited volume Popular Movements and Secret Societies in China, and some twenty years since David Ownby and Mary Somers Heidhues published their edited volume Secret Societies Reconsidered On popular religions, both Daniel Overmyer＇s FoItc Buddhist Religion and Susan Naquin＇s Millenarian Rebellion in China were also published almost forty years ago.1 Although there have been a number of important studies published both inside and outside of China on secret societies and popular religions since the 1990s, in recent years there has been a surge in new research, much of it still unpublished, on this important subject in Chinese history.

Experimental Study of the Diffusion of a Confined Wall Jet through a Perforated Plate: Influence of the Porosity and the Geometry

This paper investigated lateral diffusion of a confined two-dimensional wall jet (air inlet height: 5 cm) through a perforated plate. We considered two plates with porosities of and . The plates were positioned at distances of 10 cm and 20 cm below the jet inlet. The experiments were realized using 2D Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA). Different profiles of mean and fluctuating velocities are presented. The presence of a perforated plate strongly modified the airflow pattern compared to an empty enclosure. The velocities above and below the plate depend on several parameters, including the porosity and the plate’s position relative to the inlet slot and the longitudinal position. The difference between the flow velocity above and below the plates could not be related using a universal formula that depends on these parameters. We also investigated the influence of a porous media of a height of 20 cm (a stack of spheres having a diameter of 3.75 cm) located below the perforated plate. The results highlight that the porous medium strengthens the effects of the perforated plate on the flow.

When performing numerical modeling of fluid flows where a clear medium is adjacent to a porous medium, a degree of difficulty related to the condition at the interface between the two media, where slip velocity exists, is encountered. A similar situation can be found when a jet flow interacts with a perforated plate. The numerical modeling of a perforated plate by meshing in detail each hole is most often impossible in a practical case (many holes with different shapes). Therefore, perforated plates are often modeled as porous zones with a simplified hypothesis based on pressure losses related to the normal flow through the plate. Nevertheless, previous investigations of flow over permeable walls highlight the impossibility of deducing a universal analytical law governing the slip velocity coefficient since the latter depends on many parameters such as the Reynolds number, porosity, interface structure, design of perforations, and flow direction. This makes the modeling of such a configuration difficult. The present study proposes an original numerical interface law for a perforated plate. It is used to model the turbulent jet flow interacting with a perforated plate considered as a fictitious porous medium without a detailed description of the perforations. It considers the normal and tangential effects of the flow over the plate. Validation of the model is realized through comparison with experimental data.

AIM: To evaluate the effect of glutamine on intestinal mucosa integrity,glutathione stores and acute phase response in protein-depleted rats during an inflammatory shock. METHODS: Plasma acute phase proteins (APP),jejunal APP mRNA levels,liver and jejunal glutathione concentrations were measured before and one,three and seven days after turpentine injection in 4 groups of control,protein-restricted,protein-restricted rats supplemented with glutamine or protein powder. Bacterial translocation in mesenteric lymph nodes and intestinal morphology were also assessed. RESULTS: Protein deprivation and turpentine injection significantly reduced jejunal villus height,and crypt depths. Mucosal glutathione concentration significantly decreased in protein-restricted rats. Before turpentine oil,glutamine supplementation restored villus heights and glutathione concentration (3.24 ± 1.05 vs 1.72 ± 0.46 μmol/g tissue,P < 0.05) in the jejunum,whereas in the liver glutathione remained low. Glutamine markedly increased jejunal α1-acid glycoprotein mRNA level after turpentine oil but did not affect its plasma concentration. Bacterial translocation in protein-restricted rats was not prevented by glutamine or protein powder supplementation. CONCLUSION: Glutamine restored gut glutathione stores and villus heights in malnourished rats but had no preventive effect on bacterial translocation in our model.
