Quasi-freestanding graphene on Ni（110）： A graphene/ metal contact with suppressed interface states

Graphene/Ni（110） has been studied by time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure. The C ls core level shows a splitting typical of periodically rippled interfaces. The analysis of the C K-edge reveals that the interface states previously observed for graphene/Ni（111） are suppressed in graphene/Ni（110）. This suppression is due to the reduced hybridization of the Dirac-cone electrons in graphene with the d-bands of the （110）-oriented nickel contacts. Our results show that, contrary to commensurate growth of graphene on Ni（111）, epitaxially grown graphene on Ni（110） behaves as a quasi-freestanding sheet, as the lattice mismatch gives rise to a moir6 reconstruction.

Duplex stainless steels（Dsss） are widely used in industry for their desirable properties. Any fusion welding technique modifies the microstructure and, consequently, the properties of the material. This paper presents a parametric study of the variables that determine the energy contribution（current, voltage and welding speed） and the structural modifications produced during gas metal arc welding. The analysis comprises metallographic study,phase balance, dimensioning of the weld beads and tensile and hardness tests. The influence of the variables studied on the thermal cycles obtained（temperatures reached and cooling rate） was determined by using a finite element model. The results showed that, in addition to the indicated parameters, the parameter power transfer per volume（W/m3） and the geometry in the bead must be controlled due to their influence on the heat flow distribution and phase balance.

Competing risk analysis on outcome after hepatic resection of hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhotic patients

To investigate death for liver failure and for tumor recurrence as competing events after hepatectomy of hepatocellular *** from 864 cirrhotic Child-Pugh class A consecutive patients, submitted to curative hepatectomy (1997-2013) at two tertiary referral hospitals, were used for competing-risk analysis through the Fine and Gray method, aimed at assessing in which circumstances the oncological benefit from tumour removal is greater than the risk of dying from hepatic decompensation. To accomplish this task, the average risk of these two competing events, over 5 years of follow-up, was calculated through the integral of each cumulative incidence function, and represented the main comparison *** a median follow-up of 5.6 years, death was attributable to tumor recurrence in 63.5%, and to liver failure in 21.2% of cases. In the first 16 mo, the risk of dying due to liver failure exceeded that of dying due to tumor relapse. Tumor stage only affects death from recurrence; whereas hepatitis C infection, model for End-stage Liver Disease score, extent of hepatectomy and portal hypertension influence death from liver failure (P ses). The combination of these clinical and tumoral features identifies those patients in whom the risk of dying from liver failure did not exceed the tumour-related mortality, representing optimal surgical candidates. It also identifies those clinical circumstances where the oncological benefit would be borderline or even where the surgery would be *** knowledge of these competing events can be used to weigh the risks and benefits of hepatic resection in each clinical circumstance, separating optimal from non-optimal surgical candidates.

We revise the notion of von Neumann regularity in JB^＊-triples by finding a new characterisation in terms of the range of the quadratic operator Q（a）. We introduce the quadratic conorm of an element a in a JB^＊-triple as the minimum reduced modulus of the mapping Q（a）. It is shown that the quadratic conorm of a coincides with the infimum of the squares of the points in the triple spectrum of a. It is established that a contractive bijection between JBW^＊-triples is a triple isomorphism if, and only if, it preserves quadratic conorms. The continuity of the quadratic conorm and the generalized inverse are discussed. some applications to C^＊-algebras and von Neumann algebras are also studied.

Anthropomorphic hands have received increasing research interest in the fields of robotics and *** it is not yet clear how to evaluate their *** in the kinematic chain is essential to achieve both functionality and cosmesis.A few previous works have addressed the definition of anthropomorphism indexes,although they have some limitations in its *** this study,three different anthropomorphism indexes have been defined to compare the kinematic chain of artificial hands with that of the human *** indexes are based on the comparison of:(I)the parameters of the kinematic chain(dimensions,type of joints,orientations and ranges of motion),(2)the reachable workspace,and(3)common grasping *** artificial hands with different degrees of anthropomorphism have been compared using the three Anthropomorphism Indexes of the Kinematic Chain(AIKC).The results show a high correlation between the first and third AIKC for the hands *** second AIKC presents much lower values than the other two,although they are higher for hands that combine abduction/adduction and flexion/extension movements in the kinematic chain of each *** indexes can be useful during the initial stage of designing artificial hands or evaluating their anthropomorphism.

The strong coupling of an excitonic transition with an electromagnetic mode results in composite quasi-particles called exciton polaritons,which have been shown to combine the best properties of their individual components in semiconductor ***,the physics and applications of polariton flows in organic materials and at room temperature are still unexplored because of the poor photon confinement in such ***,we demonstrate that polaritons formed by the hybridization of organic excitons with a Bloch surface wave are able to propagate for hundreds of microns showing remarkable third-order nonlinear interactions upon high injection *** findings pave the way for the study of organic nonlinear light–matter fluxes and for a technologically promising route of the realization of dissipation-less on-chip polariton devices operating at room temperature.

By changing the control parameters, many physical systems reach a slow dynamics regime followed by an arrested or a quasiarrested state. Examples, among others, are gels and glasses. In this paper, we discuss some experimental and theoretical results in polymer and colloidal systems, where gel and glass transitions interfere, and use models from mode Coupling Theory（mCT）to illustrate the rich phenomenology observed. The continuous and the discontinuous transition lines, found in the mCT models,are considered suitable to describe respectively the gel and the glass transitions, so we suggest that the interplay between gel and glass may be interpreted in terms of the F13 mCT model, clarifying also the origin of logarithmic decays often observed in such systems. In particular, the theoretical predictions of the mCT in the F13 model are compared with molecular Dynamics simulations in model systems for chemical gels and charged colloids.
