Recent Advances to Understand Morphology Stability of Organic Photovoltaics

Organic photovoltaic devices are on the verge of commercialization with power conversion efficiencies exceeding 10 % in laboratory cells and above 8.5 % in modules. However, one of the main limitations hindering their mass scale production is the debatable inferior stability of organic photovoltaic devices in comparison to other *** donor/acceptor morphology of the active layer is required to provide carrier separation and transport to the electrodes. Unfortunately, the beneficial morphology for device performance is usually a kinetically frozen state which has not reached thermodynamic equilibrium. During the last 5 years, special efforts have been dedicated to isolate the effects related to morphology changes taking place within the active layer and compare to those affecting the interfaces with the external electrodes. The current review discusses some of the factors affecting the donor/acceptor morphology evolution as one of the major intrinsic degradation pathways. Special attention is paid to factors in the nano- and microscale *** example, phase segregation of the polymer and fullerene domains due to Ostwald ripening is a major factor in the microscale domain and is affected by the presence of additives, glass transition temperature of the polymers or use of crosslinkers in the active layer. Alternatively, the role of vertical segregation profile toward the external electrodes is key for device operation, being a clear case of nanoscale morphology evolution. For example, donor and acceptor molecules actually present at the external interfaces will determine the leakage current of the device, energy-level alignment, and interfacial recombination processes. Different techniques have been developed over the last few years to understand its relationship with the device efficiency. Trabectedin therapy as an emerging treatment strategy for recurrent platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer

Epithelial ovarian cancer(OC) is a common gynecologic malignancy in women. The standard treatment for OC is maximal cytoreductive surgical debulking followed by platinum-based chemotherapy. Despite the high response rate to primary therapy, approximately 85% of patients will develop recurrent ovarian cancer(ROC). This review identifies the clinical use of trabectedin in the treatment algorithm for ROC, with specific emphasis on platinum-sensitive ROC, for which trabectedin in combination with pegylated liposomal doxorubicin has been approved as a treatment protocol. The main mechanisms of action of trabectedin at the cellular level and in the tumor microenvironment is also discussed as bases for identifying biomarkers for selecting patients who may largely benefit from trabectedin-based therapies.

Integrating Electronic Systems for Requesting Clinical Laboratory Test into Digital Clinical Records: Design and Implementation

Clinical laboratory tests are basic elements that support healthcare tasks such as disease detection, diagnosis and monitoring of response to treatments. Current laboratory information systems focus on the patient database, tests and results, with multiple modules available, connecting with the various analytical systems or work areas. However laboratory information systems functioned as “islands of information”, because their design was fundamentally inward-looking and disconnected from other healthcare computer applications. Actually, the Electronic Health Register (EHR) is considered by clinicians as a tool with great potential healthcare benefits. The EHR, in the sense of a unique and complete record of a patient’s healthcare and state of health, regardless of the healthcare level used, is a real attempt to eliminate these “islands of information” and need modules to act as “bridges” with the laboratory information systems. This type of module, which in generic terms may be referred to as a laboratory test request module, has become an essential feature of the EHR. These modules need to use a laboratory coding system as a common language for exchanging information, ensuring that tests and results are unequivocally identified. The development of the laboratory test request module requires the commitment of professionals and political authorities, being necessary time for their design and an adequate pilot phase. The laboratory professionals have to assume a leadership role in the whole process of design, development and implementation of these modules, integrating in the equipment of information technologies of healthcare providers. In our manuscript we review the elements that may prove electronic systems for requesting clinical laboratory test into digital clinical records and the key elements to move from theory to practice.

Unilateral Impact of Altered Loading by Changing Teeth Height on the TMJ Fibrocartilage: Disc and Condyle of Wistar Rats

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is sensitive to loading and mechanical stress that provokes morphological changes produced by the impact in the occlusal plane. Here, this impact is evaluated in TMJ articular disc and articular cartilage using an in vivo model of unilateral occlusal plane impact and by analysis of serial tissue sections stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin (H-E) or with Masson trichrome technique. Thus, six groups of 5 Wistar rats (200 - 250 g) are subjected to biomechanical dental stimulation by placing unilateral resin occlusal interference, or unilateral tooth wear made by upper left molars artificial mechanical devastation (1 control and 2 experimental groups for each treatment). Each treatment is evaluated two times at 1 and 15 days post-treatment. By H-E staining, control groups show chondrocytes arrangement as several cord cell groups in comparison with the experimental groups, which show an arrangement in one cord cell along of articular disc. However, this yields no significant difference (p < 0.05) in cell number between control and experimental groups. In contrast, in articular cartilage chondrocytes are random distributed along the superficial zone in control groups, while in experimental groups cell-free regions are observed in superficial zone. An image Blue hue analysis for trichrome stain is performed to quantify collagen;this shows a significant collagen decrease (p < 0.05) in almost all experimental groups compared with the controls. A degenerative process biomechanically induced by unilateral occlusal plane modification, causes cell and tissue changes on the TMJ structures that remain the degenerative changes observed in early osteoarthritis.

Range Extension and Channel Capacity Increase in Impulse-Radio Ultra-Wideband Communications

We theoretically analyze the channel capacity of a 5th-order Gaussian pulse-based ultra-wideband （UWB） system and experimentally demonstrate 2 Gbit/s UWB-over-fiber transmission systems incorporating wireless transmission. Both electrical and photonic UWB pulse generation methods are employed and its performance is compared. By utilizing optimum UWB pulse design and employing a digital signal processing （DSP） receiver, a bit-error-rate above the forward error correction （FEC） limit for 8 meters of wireless＇emis- sion is obtained in our photonic generation UWB system. A noticeable increase in the channel capacity is achieved compared to previously reported results.

Spinal cord injury is a very common pathological event that has devastating functional consequences in patients. In recent years, several research groups are trying to find an effective therapy that could be applied in clinical practice. In this study, we analyzed the combination of different strategies as a potential therapy for spinal cord injury. Immunization with neural derived peptides(INDP), inhibition of glial scar formation(dipyridyl: DPY), as well as the use of biocompatible matrix(fibrin glue: FG) impregnated with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) were combined and then its beneficial effects were evaluated in the induction of neuroprotection and neuroregeneration after acute SCI. Sprague-Dawley female rats were subjected to a moderate spinal cord injury and then randomly allocated into five groups: 1) phosphate buffered saline; 2) DPY; 3) INDP + DPY; 4) DPY+ FG; 5) INDP + DPY + FG + MSCs. In all rats, intervention was performed 72 hours after spinal cord injury. Locomotor and sensibility recovery was assessed in all rats. At 60 days after treatment, histological examinations of the spinal cord(hematoxylin-eosin and Bielschowsky staining) were performed. Our results showed that the combination therapy(DPY+ INDP + FG+ MSCs) was the best strategy to promote motor and sensibility recovery. In addition, significant increases in tissue preservation and axonal density were observed in the combination therapy group. Findings from this study suggest that the combination theapy(DPY+ INDP + FG + MSCs) exhibits potential effects on the protection and regeneration of neural tissue after acute spinal cord injury. All procedures were approved by the Animal Bioethics and Welfare Committee(approval No. 178544; CSNBTBIBAJ 090812960)on August 15, 2016.

Clinical Parameters of Metabolic Control (HbA_(1c)) and Deterioration of Peripheral Arterial Perfusion in Type 2 Diabetes

Objective: To determine the relationship between clinical parameters (HbA1c) whit metabolic control and deterioration of peripheral arterial perfusion in diabetic patients. Methodology: 108 medical records of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were evaluated. We obtained averages of: blood glucose (162.3 ± 73.10 mg/dl), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c = 7.64% ± 1.77%), cholesterol (189.28 ± 35.25 mg/dl), triglycerides (189.11 ± 87.76 mg/dl), Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP = 119.69 ± 14.95 mmHg), Diastolic Blood Pressure (DBP = 77.15 ± 9.55 mmHg) and Media Blood Pressure (MBP = 91.36 ± 9.89 mmHg). We correlated variable HbA1c with vascular injury symptomatology. Results: Correlation was found between sensitivity dysfunction and HbA1c with a statistical significance of p = 0.01, and a correlation Kendal coefficient w = 0.01, any other parameter of metabolic control was not correlated with symptoms of vascular injury. Conclusion: It is remarkable that the sensitivity dysfunction is a symptom of poorly vascularized lower extremities caused for both functional impairment and structural changes in diabetic patients’ peripheral nerves, even in the preclinical stage of vascular disease. The HbA1c could also be investigated as a likely sensitivity dysfunction biomarker in DM due to the correlation presented in this study but more studies must be realized.

Validity and Reliability of a Measuring Device Based on Sound Transmission for Diagnosis of Hip Dysplasia in Newborns

Sound transmission has been used for diagnosis of hip dysplasia in newborns and infants with tunning fork and sthetoscope. The study aims to identify the validity of a device based on sound transmission. Male and female newborns from Celaya, Gto, ranging from 4 to 28-day-old were selected for the study. The sound transmission device was used both, in bilateral assessment (compared sound transmission) and on each hip separately (sound transmission with extension/flexion). In the first application if the sound is lower by a digit, there is a hip unhealthy. In the second application if the sound is increased by a digit, there is also an alteration of the hip. A hip ultrasound was applied using the Graf technique as a gold standard. Sensitivity, specificity and predictive values were calculated to identify validity. The intra-observer and inter-observer Kappa Test was applied to identify reliability. The hips of 103 newborns were assessed, obtaining a sensitivity of 60.9%, and a specificity of 92%;it should be a positive predictive value of 51.9% and a negative predictive value of 95% for the compared sound transmission test. In the sound transmission test with extension/flexion, the values were 82.6%, 96.2%, 73.1% and 97.8% for sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value, respectively. The result of the intra-observer kappa was 0.80 and the inter-observer was 0.70 for the compared sound transmission. The intra-observer Kappa was 0.88 and the inter-observer was 0.78 for the compared sound transmission test with extension/flexion. The device for sound transmission is valid and reliable for the diagnosis of dysplastic development hip disease in newborns.
