Influence of Pt/Ru anodic ratio on the valorization of ethanol by PEM electrocatalytic reforming towards value-added products

The ethanol electro-reforming process was studied over PtRu/C catalysts synthesized by the modified polyol method with different *** particular,this work reports the influence of anodic Pt:Ru ratio(5:1,2:1 and 1:2)on the organic product distribution(acetaldehyde,acetic acid and ethyl acetate)and pure hydrogen generation at different current densities operation *** characterization of the catalysts was made by X-ray diffraction(XRD),temperature-programmed reduction(TPR)and N_(2) adsorption-desorption *** patterns showed that Ru is introduced into the Pt structure,forming an alloy between both ***,the degree of alloy was higher by increasing the Ru *** TPR profiles Pt was found to be properly reduced while Ru was both in metallic state and forming *** electrochemical behaviour of each catalyst towards ethanol electroreforming process was investigated through electrochemical techniques in a half cell and a single proton exchange membrane(PEM)cell *** intermediate Pt:Ru ratio was found to result in high current density and electrochemical surface area(ECSA)values along with lower amounts of adsorbed ***,Ru addition seems to diminish the degree of degradation of the *** on characterization and in agreement with essays carried out in a PEM cell at mild conditions(80℃ and 1 atm),PtRu/C 2:1 anode provided the best electrocatalytic results in terms of current density(740 mA cm^(-2)),hydrogen production and selectivity toward acetic acid(up to 15%apart from acetaldehyde and ethyl acetate)while requiring the lowest energy consumption.

Short-term effects of post-fire mulching with straw or wood chips on soil properties of semi-arid forests

Gas-phase electrocatalytic conversion of CO_2 to chemicals on sputtered Cu and Cu–C catalysts electrodes

A novel gas-phase electrocatalytic cell containing a low-temperature proton exchange membrane(PEM)was developed to electrochemically convert CO_2into organic *** different Cu-based cathode catalysts(Cu and Cu–C)were prepared by physical vapor deposition method(sputtering)and subsequently employed for the gas-phase electroreduction of CO_2at different temperatures(70–90°C).The prepared electrodes Cu and Cu–C were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),X-ray photoemission spectroscopy(XPS)and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).As revealed,Cu is partially oxidized on the surface of the samples and the Cu and Cu–C cathodic catalysts were comprised of a porous,continuous,and homogeneous film with nanocrystalline Cu with a grain size of 16 and 8 nm,*** influence of the applied current and temperature on the electro-catalytic activity and selectivity of these materials was *** the two investigated electrodes,the pure Cu catalyst film showed the highest CO_2specific electrocatalytic reduction rates and higher selectivity to methanol formation compared to the Cu–C electrode,which was attributed to the higher particle size of the former and lower Cu O/Cu *** obtained results show potential interest for the possible use of electrical renewable energy for the transformation of CO_2into valuable products using low metal loading Cu based electrodes(0.5 mg Cu cm^(-2))prepared by sputtering.

Exploring the factors influencing the hydrological response of soil after low and high-severity fires with post-fire mulching in Mediterranean forests

despite ample literature,the influence of the individual soil properties and covers on the hydrological response of burned soils of forests has not clearly identified.A clear understanding of the surface runoff and erosion rates altered by wildfires and prescribed fires is beneficial to identify the most suitable post-fire treatment This study has carried out a combined analysis of the hydrological response of soil and its driving factors in burned forests of Central-Eastern *** pine stands of these forests were subjected to both prescribed fire and wildfire,and,in the latter case,to post-fire treatment with ***,simple multi-regression models are proposed to predict runoff and erosion in the experi-mental *** the case of the prescribed burning,the fire had a limited impact on runoff and erosion compared to the unburned areas,due to the limited changes in soil *** contrast,the wildfire increased many-fold the runoff and erosion rates,but the mulching reduced the hydrological response of the burned soils,particularly for the first two-three rainfalls after the *** increase in runoff and erosion after the wildfire was associated to the removal of the vegetation cover,soil water repellency,and ash left by fire;the changes in water infiltration played a minor role on runoff and *** multi-regression models developed for the prescribed fire were accurate to predict the post-fire runoff ***,these models were less reliable for predictions of the mean erosion *** predictions of erosion after wildfire and mulching were excellent,while those of runoff were not satisfactory(except for the mean values).These results are useful to better understand the relations among the hydrological effects of fire on one side and the main soil properties and covers on the other ***,the proposed prediction models are useful to support the planning activities of forest managers and hydrologists towards a more ef

Mortality Trends for Neglected Tropical Diseases in the State of Sergipe,Brazil,1980-2013

Background:Neglected Tropical Diseases are a set of communicable diseases that affect the population so low socioeconomic status,particularly 1.4 billion people who are living below the poverty *** study has investigated the magnitude and mortality time trends for these diseases in the state of Sergipe,Northeast Region of ***:We conducted an ecological study of time series,based on secondary data derived from the Mortality Information System of the Ministry of *** mortality rates(crude,age-standardized rates and proportional ratio)were calculated from the deaths due to Neglected Tropical Diseases in the state of Sergipe,from 1980 to *** time trends were obtained using the Joinpoint regression ***:Three hundred six thousand and eight hundred seventy-two deaths were certified in the state and Neglected Tropical Diseases were mentioned as the underlying cause in 1,203 certificates(0.39%).Mean number of deaths was 35.38 per year,and crude and age-standardized mortality rates were,respectively:2.16 per 100000 inhabitants(95%CI:1.45-2.87)and 2.87 per 100000 inhabitants(95%CI:1.93-3.82);the proportional mortality ratio was 0.41%(95%CI:0.27-0.54).In that period,Schistosomiasis caused 654 deaths(54.36%),followed by Chagas disease,with 211(17.54%),and by Leishmaniases,with 142(11.80%)*** other diseases totalized 196 deaths(16.30%).There were increasing mortality trends for Neglected Tropical Diseases,Schistosomiasis and Chagas disease in the last 15 years,according to the age-standardized rates,and stability of the mortality trends for ***:The Neglected Tropical Diseases show increasing trends and are a real public health problem in the state of Sergipe,since they are responsible for significant mortality *** following diseases call attention for showing greater number of deaths in the period of study:Schistosomiasis,Chagas disease and *** finally suggest that public managers take appropri

The tropical arboreal species Brazilian mahogany(Swietenia macrophylla) is very important economically and ecologically,for which understanding ecophysiological variables such as sap flow will improve understanding of the species and its *** paper aims to measure uncertainties(U) involved in the application of the heat ratio method for determining sap flow in Brazilian mahogany using sets of heating probes and thermometers installed on plants of 18 months of age,cultivated in Yellow Latosol,under a weighing lysimeter and located in a protected *** uncertainty in sap flow was calculated as the combination of uncertainty in the thermal diffusivity(U_(k)),conductive section(U_(Sc)) and corrected sap velocity(U_(Vc)).U_(k) had greater weight in determining the flow of sap in Brazilian mahogany,when compared to U_(Sc) and U_(Vc).The thermal diffusivity during the cycle,or period evaluated,must be adjusted to improve the accuracy of the heat ratio method because the sap flow overestimated transpiration by 15.0%.When soil water was optimal In addition,the vapor pressure deficit linearly and indirectly influenced the SF with a difference of 14.6%.

Short-term changes in soil properties after prescribed fire and mulching with fern in Mediterranean forests

Prescribed fire,although having low intensity and being able to reduce the risk of wildfire may modify soil properties in the short term,with possible increases in runoffand erosion *** mulching with vegetation residues is one of the most common post-fire management *** of fern,which is abundant on the Mediterranean forest floor,may be used to replace straw for mulching fireaffected ***,the effects of prescribed fires are not completely understood,and there is no data regarding the use of fern to protect soil after fire in the *** fill this gap,selected soil chemical parameters were analyzed,on a comparative basis,in three Mediterranean forests(pine,oak and chestnut)in Calabria(Southern Italy).These parameters were measured immediately and one year after fire in unburned,burned and not treated,and burned and mulched *** in soil chemical properties among the different treatments were significant,and the effects of the prescribed fire and mulching were dependent on the time elapsed from their application and forest *** general,mulching was not effective in limiting the changes in the monitored soil properties compared to the pre-fire *** forest species showed different temporal trends in changes of soil properties.

BACKGROUND The uncertainties about coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),the change in routine,lifestyles and the reduction of physical contact can cause stress,anxiety,emotional overload,poor sleep and even physical health *** To evaluate the scientific publications available on the relationship between COVID-19 and anxiety experienced in the general population,during the period of social isolation,adopted by governmental organizations and public health policymakers as a measure to contain the spread of *** A literature search was performed systematically exploring the PubMed and Medline databases using the following terms classified as MeSH descriptors:(“anxiety”AND“pandemic”AND“COVID-19”).For the search,in the Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde–BVS,***,Web of Science and National Library plat forms, the following keywords were used: ("anxiety" AND "coronavirus" AND"social isolation"). Thirty-seven peer-reviewed articles were found. PRISMA andthe Downs & Black checklist were used for qualitative *** applying the inclusion criteria, seven (n = 7) original scientific articles wereselected. The collated evidence demonstrated increased levels of symptoms ofanxiety and depression during the period of social isolation. The populationbetween 21 to 40 years was most affected. The risk of severe depression was twiceas high at the epicenter of the pandemic.
