Big Data Analytics is an emerging field since massive storage and computing capabilities have been made available by advanced e-infrastructures.Earth and Environmental sciences are likely to benefit from Big Data Analytics techniques supporting the processing of the large number of Earth Observation datasets currently acquired and generated through observations and simulations.However,Earth Science data and applications present specificities in terms of relevance of the geospatial information,wide heterogeneity of data models and formats,and complexity of processing.Therefore,Big Earth Data Analytics requires specifically tailored techniques and tools.The EarthServer Big Earth Data Analytics engine offers a solution for coverage-type datasets,built around a high performance array database technology,and the adoption and enhancement of standards for service interaction(OGC WCS and WCPS).The EarthServer solution,led by the collection of requirements from scientific communities and international initiatives,provides a holistic approach that ranges from query languages and scalability up to mobile access and visualization.The result is demonstrated and validated through the development of lighthouse applications in the Marine,Geology,Atmospheric,Planetary and Cryospheric science domains.

Treatment for paraganglioma with stereotactic radiotherapy

BACKGROUND Paragangliomas(PG)are rare neoplasms of neuroendocrine origin that tend to be highly vascularized,slow-growing,and usually sporadic.To date,common treatment options are surgical resection(SR),with or without radiation therapy(RT),and a watch-and-wait approach.AIM To evaluate the local control and effectiveness of exclusive fractionated stereotactic RT(FSRT)treatment in unresectable PG(uPG).METHODS We retrospectively evaluated patients with uPG(medically inoperable or refused SR)treated with FSRT with a Cyberknife System(Accuray Incorporated,Sunnyvale,California).Toxicity and initial efficacy were evaluated.RESULTS From May 2009 to January 2023,6 patients with a median age of 68(range 20-84)were treated with FSRT.The median delivered dose was 21 Gy(range 20-30 Gy)at a median isodose line of 75.5%(range 70%-76%)in 4 fractions(range 3-5 fractions).The median volume was 13.6 mL(range 12.4-65.24 mL).The median cumulative biological effective dose and equivalent dose in 2-Gy fractions were 70 Gy and 37.10 Gy respectively.Site of origin involved were the timpa-nojugular glomus(4/6),temporal bone,and cervical spine.In 1 of the 6 patients,the follow-up was insufficient;5 of 6 patients showed a 5-year overall survival and 5-year progression-free survival of 100%.We observed negligible toxicities during and after RT.The majority of patients showed stable symptoms during follow-up.Only 1 patient developed spine metastases.CONCLUSION Our preliminary results on this small cohort of patients suggest that FSRT could be an effective and safe alternative to SR.

Evaluating Group Formation in Virtual Communities

In this paper, we are interested in answering the following research question: "Is it possible to form effective groups in virtual communities by exploiting trust information without significant overhead, similarly to real user communities?"In order to answer this question, instead of adopting the largely used approach of exploiting the opinions provided by all the users of the community(called global reputation), we propose to use a particular form of reputation, called local reputation. We also propose an algorithm for group formation able to implement the proposed procedure to form effective groups in virtual communities. Another interesting question is how to measure the effectiveness of groups in virtual communities. To this aim we introduce the index in a measure of the effectiveness of the group formation. We tested our algorithm by realizing some experimental trials on real data from the real world EPINIONS and CIAO communities, showing the significant advantages of our procedure w.r.t. another prominent approach based on traditional global reputation.

Anomalous Sorption Kinetics of Self-Interacting Particles by a Spherical Trap

In this paper we propose a computational framework for the investigation of the correlated motion between positive and negative ions exposed to the attraction of a bubble surface that mimics the(oscillating)cell membrane.Specifically we aim to investigate the role of surface traps with substances freely diffusing around the cell.The physical system we want to model is an anchored gas drop submitted to a diffusive flowof charged surfactants(ions).When the diffusing surfactantsmeet the surface of the bubble,they are reversibly adsorbed and their local concentration is accurately measured.The correlated diffusion of surfactants is described by a Poisson-Nernst-Planck(PNP)system,in which the drift term is given by the gradient of a potential which includes both the effect of the bubble and the Coulomb interaction between the carriers.The latter term is obtained from the solution of a self-consistent Poisson equation.For very short Debye lengths one can adopt the so called Quasi-Neutral limit which drastically simplifies the system,thus allowing for much faster numerical simulations.The paper has four main objectives.The first one is to present a PNP model that describes ion charges in presence of a trap.The second one is to provide benchmark tests for the validation of simplified multiscale models under current development[1].The third one is to explore the relevance of the term describing the interaction among the apolar tails of the anions.The last one is to quantitatively explore the validity of the Quasi-Neutral limit by comparison with detailed numerical simulation for smaller and smaller Debye lengths.In order to reach these goals,we propose a simple and efficient Alternate Direction Implicit method for the numerical solution of the non-linear PNP system,which guarantees second order accuracy both in space and time,without requiring solution of nonlinear equation at each time step.New semi-implicit scheme for a simplified PNP system near quasi neutrality is also proposed.

BENIMPACT Suite： A Tool for ZEB Performance Assessment

In the last years, there has been a big development of European policies and regulations on energy saving topics. This is due to the will to reach the targets of 20-20-20. Buildings consume a lot of energy, so the legal framework related to the reduction of energy consumption in this sector has had a huge evolution. The "NZEB (nearly zero energy building)" concept was introduced in 2010, eight years after the release of the original EPBD (energy performance of buildings directive). By 2020, all new buildings and buildings that are subject to renovation should have very low energy consumption, covered for the major part by renewable sources. Designing and realizing this kind of building is a very ambitious task, which needs to be supported by appropriate tools and software. This paper presents a new tool for assessing building performance, named BENIMPACT Suite (building"s environmental impact evaluator and optimizer), which is developed by EnginSoft (Italy). The suite is organized in different core modules that allow to verify how the building performance level is influenced by different design choices, such as envelope shape and materials, plant systems, renewable sources use, etc.. One of the test cases used to validate the BENIMPACT Suite energy performance is the evaluation of an interesting Italian ZEB, finished in 2010 and called CasaZeroEnergy. It is located in Felettano (Udine), a small town in northeastern Italy. This building is an experimental house designed and monitored by the Laboratory of Building Design of the University of Trento (Italy) and built by Polo Le Ville Plus Group (Cassacco-Italy). The energy performance of this building was modelled and evaluated using BENIMPACT Suite, and simulation results were compared with monitored data.

Rectal perforation by inadvertent ingestion of a blister pack: A case report and review of literature

The accidental ingestion of a foreign body(FB) is a relatively common condition. In the present study, we report a peculiar case of rectal perforation, the first to our knowledge, caused by the inadvertent ingestion of a blister pill pack. The aim of this report is to illustrate the difficulties of the case from a diagnostic and therapeutic viewpoint as well as its unusual presentation. A 75-year-old woman, mentally impaired, arrived at our emergency department in critical condition. The computed tomography scan revealed a substantial abdominopelvic peritoneal effusion and free perigastric air. The patient was therefore submitted to an urgent exploratory laparotomy; a 2-cm long, full-thickness lesion was identified in the anterior distal part of the intraperitoneal rectum. Hence, we performed a Hartmann's procedure. Because of her critical condition, the patient was eventually transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, where she died after 10 d, showing no surgical complication. The ingestion of FBs is usually treated with observation or endoscopic removal. Less than 1% of FBs are likely to cause an intestinal perforation. The intestinal perforation resulting from the unintentional ingestion of an FB is often a difficult challenge when it comes to treatment, due to its late diagnosis and the patients' deteriorated clinical condition.

New approach to peritoneal surface malignancies

Peritoneal surface malignancies (PSM) are a clinical entity with an unfavourable prognosis.They comprise peritoneal carcinomatosis,pseudomyxoma peritonei,and primitive tumors of the peritoneum.Because the treatment of PSM presents unique and challenging problems to the cancer clinician,many new approaches have been attempted in recent years.In the current and next issues of World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology,some international groups of researchers discuss the most important and innovative aspects of PSM treatment,with particular accuracy for cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy.In conclusion,because this new approach to PSM has a reputation for being based more on common sense than on experimental data,I hope that highlighting this topic can make a contribution to the treatment of this group of diseases.

Sorbents with high efficiency for CO2 capture based on amines-supported carbon for biogas upgrading

Sorbents for CO2 capture have been prepared by wet impregnation of a commercial active carbon （Ketjen-black, Akzo Nobel） with two CO2-philic compounds, polyethylenimine （PEI） and tetraethylenepentamine （TEPA）, respectively. The effects of amine amount （from 10 to 70 wt.%）, CO2 concentration in the feed, sorption temperature and gas hourly space velocity on the CO2 capture performance have been investigated. The sorption capacity has been evaluated using the breakthrough method, with a fixed bed reactor equipped with on line gas chromatograph. The samples have been characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray （SEM/EDX）. A promising CO2 sorption capacity of 6.90 mmo1/gsorbent has been obtained with 70 wt.% of supported TEPA at 70℃ under a stream containing 80 vol% of CO2. Sorption tests, carried out with simulated biogas compositions （CH4/CO2 mixtures）, have revealed an appreciable CO2 separation selectivity; stable performance was maintained for 20 adsorption-desorption cycles.

Treatment with plasmapheresis, immunoglobulins and rituximab for chronic-active antibody-mediated rejection in kidney transplantation: Clinical, immunological and pathological results

AIM To evaluate the role of a therapeutic regimen with plasma exchange, intravenous immunoglobulins and rituximab in chronic-active antibody-mediated rejection(c AMR) settings.METHODS We compared 21 kidney transplant recipients(KTRs) with a diagnosis of c AMR in a retrospective casecontrol analysis: nine KTRs treated with plasmapheresis, intravenous immunoglobulins and rituximab(PE-IVIGRTX group) vs 12 patients(control group) not treated with antibody-targeted therapies. We examined kidney survival and functional outcomes 24 mo after diagnosis. Histological features and donor-specific antibody(DSA) characteristics(MFI and C1 q-fixing ability) were also investigated.RESULTS No difference in graft survival between the two groups was noted: three out of nine patients in the PE-IVIG-RTX group(33.3%) and 4/12 in the control group(33.3%) experienced loss of allograft function at a median time after diagnosis of 14 mo(min 12-max 18) and 15 mo(min 7-max 22), respectively. Kidney functional tests and proteinuria 24 mo after cA MR diagnosis were also similar in both groups. Only microvascular inflammation(glomerulitis + peritubular capillaritis score) was significantly reduced after PE-IVIG-RTX in seven out of eight patients(87.5%) in the PE-IVIG-RTX group(median score 3 in pre-treatment biopsy vs 1.5 in post-treatment biopsy; P = 0.047), without any impact on kidney survival and/or DSA characteristics. No functional or histological parameter at diagnosis was predictive of clinical outcome.CONCLUSION Our data showed no difference in the two year posttreatment outcome of kidney grafts treated with PE-IVIGRTX for c AMR diagnosis, however there were notable improvements in microvascular inflammation in posttherapy protocol biopsies. Further studies, especially involving innovative therapeutic approaches, are required to improve the management and long-term results of this severe condition.
