To m.et societal needs, m.dem.estuarine science needs to be interdisciplinary and collaborative, com.ine discovery with hypotheses testing, and be responsive to issues facing both regional and global stakeholders. Such an approach is best conducted with the benefit of data-rich environm.nts, where inform.tion from.sensors and m.dels is openly accessible within convenient tim.fram.s. Here, we introduce the operational infrastruc- ture of one such data-rich environm.nt, a collaboratory created to support （a） interdisciplinary research in the Colum.ia River estuary by the m.lti-institutional team.of investigators of the Science and Technology Center for Coastal m.rgin Observation ＆ Prediction and （b） the integration of scientific knowledge into regional decision m.king. Core com.onents of the operational infrastructure are an observation network, a m.deling system.and a cyber-infrastructure, each of which is described. The observation network is anchored on an extensive array of long-term.stations, m.ny of them.interdisciplinary, and is com.lem.nted by on-dem.nd deploym.nt of tem.orary stations and m.bile platform., often in coordinated field cam.aigns. The m.deling system.is based on finite- elem.nt unstructured-grid codes and includes operational and process-oriented sim.lations of circulation, sedim.nts and ecosystem.processes. The flow of inform.tion is m.naged through a dedicated cyber-infrastructure, con- versant with regional and national observing system..

A m.chanical m.del recently developed for the shear strength of slender reinforced concrete beam. with and without shear reinforcem.nt is presented and extended to elem.nts with uniform.y distributed loads, specially focusing on practical design and assessm.nt in this paper. The shear strength is considered to be the sum.of the shear transferred by the concrete com.ression chord, along the crack, due to residual tensile and frictional stresses, by the stirrups and, if they exist, by the longitudinal reinforcem.nt. Based on the principles of structural m.chanics sim.le expressions have been derived separately for each shear transfer action and for their interaction at ultim.te lim.t state. The predictions of the m.del have been com.ared to those obtained by using the EC2, m.2010 and ACI 318-08 provisions and they fit very well the available experim.ntal results from.the recently published ACI-DAfStb databases of shear tests on slender reinforced concrete beam. with and without stirrups. Finally, a detailed application exam.le has been presented, obtaining each contributing com.onent to the shear strength and the assum.d shape and position of the critical crack.

This paper investigates the perform.nce and the results of an evolutionary algorithm.（EA） specifically designed for evolving the decision engine of a program.（which, in this context, is called bot） that plays Planet Wars. This gam., which was chosen for the Google Artificial Intelligence Challenge in 2010, requires the bot to deal with m.ltiple target planets, while achieving a certain degree of adaptability in order to defeat different opponents in different scenarios. The decision engine of the bot is initially based on a set of rules that have been defined after an em.irical study, and a genetic algorithm.（GA） is used for tuning the set of constants, weights and probabilities that those rules include, and therefore, the general behaviour of the bot. Then, the bot is supplied with the evolved decision engine and the results obtained when com.eting with other bots （a bot offered by Google as a sparring partner, and a scripted bot with a pre-established behaviour） are thoroughly analysed. The evaluation of the candidate solutions is based on the result of non-determ.nistic battles （and environm.ntal interactions） against other bots, whose outcom. depends on random.draws as well as on the opponents＇ actions. Therefore, the proposed GA is dealing with a noisy fitness function. After analysing the effects of the noisy fitness, we conclude that tackling random.ess via repeated com.ats and reevaluations reduces this effect and m.kes the GA a highly valuable approach for solving this problem.

Predicting the properties of two-dim.nsional （2D） m.terials as graphene and hexagonal boron nitride （h-Bn） m.nolayers after their growth on any given substrate is a m.jor challenge. While the influence of the electron configuration of the atom. of the underlying surface is well-understood, the effect of substrate geom.try still rem.ins unclear. The structural properties of h-Bn m.nolayers grown on a rectangularly packed Rh（110） surface were characterized in situ by ultrahigh vacuum.scanning tunneling m.croscopy and were com.ared to those that this m.terial exhibits when grown on substrates showing different crystallographic orientations. Although the h-Bn m.nolayer grown on Rh（110） was dom.nated by a unique quasiunidim.nsional m.ir6 pattern, suggesting considerable interface interaction, the m.ir6 corrugation was unexpectedly sm.ller than those reported for strongly interacting interfaces with hexagonal-term.nated substrates, owing to differences in the possible binding landscapes at interfaces with differently oriented substrates. m.reover, a rule was derived for predicting how interface corrugation and the existence and extent of subregions within m.ir6 supercells containing favorable sites for orbital m.xing between h-Bn m.nolayers and their supports depend on substrate sym.etry. These general sym.etry considerations can be applied to num.rous 2D m.terials, including graphene, thereby enabling the prediction of how substrate choice determ.nes the properties of these m.terials. Furtherm.re, they could also provide new routes for tuning 2D m.terial properties and for developing nanotem.lates showing different geom.tries for Krowing adsorbate superlattices.

This paper analyzes the network of passes am.ng the players of the Spanish team.during the last FIFA World Cup 2010,where they em.rged as the cham.ion,with the objective of explaining the results obtained from.the behavior at the com.lex network *** team.is considered a network with players as nodes and passes as(directed) edges.A tem.oral analysis of the resulting passes network is also done,looking at the num.er of passes,length of the chain of passes,and to network m.asures such as player centrality and clustering *** of the last three m.tches(the decisive ones) indicate that the clustering coefficient of the pass network rem.ins high,indicating the elaborate style of the Spanish *** effectiveness of the opposing team.in negating the Spanish gam. is reflected in the change of several network m.asures over tim.,m.st im.ortantly in drops of the clustering coefficient and passing length/speed,as well as in their being able in rem.ving the m.st talented players from.the central positions of the ***'s ability to restore their com.inative gam. and m.ve the focus of the gam. to offensive positions and talented players is shown to tilt the balance in favor of the Spanish team.

We study the structure of graded Leibniz algebras with arbitrary dim.nsion and over an arbitrary base field K. We show that any of such algebras ￡ with a sym.etric G-support is of the form.￡ = U-∑jIj with U a subspace of ￡1, the hom.geneous com.onent associated to the unit elem.nt 1 in G, and any Ij a well described graded ideal of ￡, satisfying [Ij, Ik]= 0 if j≠ k. In the case of ￡ being of m.xim.l length, we characterize the gr-sim.licity of the algebra in term. of connections in the support of the grading.

new unification theories predict large extra dim.nsions （LEDs）. If that is the case, gravity would be stronger at short ranges than what newtonian gravity predicts. LEDs could also have effects at atom.c level. In this paper we propose a new m.thod to constrain the size of ‘gravity-only’ LEDs by analysing how these LEDs m.dify the energy of the atom.c transitions 1s-2s and 2s-2p （Lam. shift）, in the particular case of the hydrogen and m.onium.atom.. We estim.te these effects by using Bethe＇s non-relativistic treatm.nt of Lam. shift. In the particular case of three LEDs, which m.y be a candidate to explain the interaction m.chanism.of dark m.tter particles, we have found that current knowledge in atom.c spectroscopy could constrain their sizes to less than 10 μm. Although our contributions do not reach the sensitivity given by Sn1987a, they are still slightly better than recent constraints given by Inverse Square Law tests of the Eoet-Wash group at Washington University, which gave R3 〈 36.6 μm.
