Quantitative assessment of self-management in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: An unmet clinical need

In this editorial we comment on the article titled“establishment and validation of an adherence prediction system for lifestyle interventions in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease”by Zeng et al published in a recent issue of the World Journal of ***-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)represents one of the current challenges in hepatology and public health,due to its continuous growing prevalence and the rising incidence of NAFLD-related fibrosis,non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and *** only effective therapeutic strategy for this dis-ease is represented by encouraging patients to improve their lifestyle through the modification of dietary intake and increased physical exercise,but the effective application of such modifications is often limited by various factors such as lack of information,psychological barriers or poor social *** poor adherence to a healthy lifestyle can be decisive in determining the clinical outcome,in daily practice there is a lack of quantitative instruments aimed at identifying patients with the lowest adherence to lifestyle changes and higher risk of disease progre-ssion in the course of *** this article,Zeng et al propose a quantitative scale to assess the grade of adherence of patients with NAFLD to hea-lthy lifestyle intervention,called the exercise and Diet Adherence Scale(eDAS).This scale,consisting of 33 items divided into 6 dimensions which relates to six subjective aspects in the self-management of NAFLD,has shown a good correlation with the identification of the sub-cohort of patients with the highest reduction in caloric intake,increase in physical exercise,probability of a reduction in liver stiffness measurement and alanine aminotransferase *** cor-relation among clinical outcomes and specific dimensions of this scale also highlights the pivotal role of a good and confidential doctor-patient relationship and of an effective *** is an urgent need for practical and e

Non-conventional sorption materials for the removal of legacy and emerging PFAS from water:A review

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFAS)are a class of ubiquitous,persistent,and hazardous pollutants that raise concerns for human health and the ***,PFAS removal from water relies on adsorption techniques using conventional sorption materials like activated carbons(ACs)and ion exchange resins(IeRs).However,there is a continuous search for more efficient and performing adsorbent materials to better address the wide range of chemical structures of PFAS in the environment,to increase their selectivity,and to achieve an overall high adsorption capacity and faster uptake *** this context,results from the application of non-conventional sorption materials(i.e.,readily available biological-based materials like proteins and advanced materials like nanocomposites and cyclodextrins)are reported and discussed in consideration of the following criteria:i)removal efficiency and kinetics of legacy PFAS(e.g.,PFOA,PFBA)as well as newly-introduced and emerging PFAS(e.g.,GenX),ii)representativity of environmental conditions in the experimental setup(e.g.,use of environmentally relevant experimental concentrations),iii)regenerability,reusability and applicability of the materials,and iv)role of the material modifications on PFAS *** this review,it emerged that organic frameworks,nano(ligno)cellulosic-based materials,and layered double hydroxides are among the most promising materials herein investigated for PFAS adsorption,and it was also observed that the presence of fluorine-and amine-moieties in the material structure improve both the selectivity and PFAS ***,the lack of data on their applicability in real environments and the costs involved means that this research is still in its infancy and need further investigation.

Design and synthesis of superior cost-effective non-fullerene acceptors(NFAs)are still big challenges for facilitating the commercialization of organic solar cells(OSCs),yet to be ***,two medium bandgap fully non-fused ring electron acceptors(NFReAs,medium bandgap,i,e.,1,3-1,8 eV),namely PTR-2Cl and PTR-4Cl are synthesized with only four steps by using intramolecular noncovalent interaction central core,structured alkyl side chain orientation linking units and flanking with different electron-withdrawing end *** them,PTR-4C1 exhibits increased average electrostatic potential(eSP)difference with polymer donor,enhanced crystallinity and compactπ-πstacking compared with the control molecule *** a result,the PTR-4Cl-based OSC achieved an impressive power conversion efficiency(PCe)of 14.72%,with a much higher open-circuit voltage(V_(OC))of 0.953 V and significantly improved fill factor(FF)of 0.758,demonstrating one of the best acceptor material in the top-performing fully NFReA-based OSCs with both high PCe and V_(OC).Notably,PTR-4Cl-based cells maintain a good T_80lifetime of its initial PCe after over 936 h under a continuous thermal annealing treatment and over1300 h T_(80)lifetime without *** work provides a cost-effective design strategy for NFReAs on obtaining high V_(OC),efficient exciton dissociation,and ordered molecular packing and thus high-efficiency and stable OSCs.

Intestinal anti-inflammatory effect of a plant sterol food supplement in experimental murine colitis and cell co-culture models

The potential of a plant sterol food supplement （PS-FS） in addressing intestinal inflammation in vivo and in vitro was evaluated. As in vivo model， C57BL/6J mice were exposed to 1.5% dextran sulfate sodium in three 5-day periods， with 10-day rest intervals in between， daily reciving PS-FS （35 mg PS/kg）. The in vitro approach involved a bi-cameral system with 8-day-differentiated Caco-2 （apical） and RAW264.7 cells （basolateral）. The bioaccessible fraction of PS-FS， obtained after INFOGeST 2.0 simulated gastrointestinal digestion， was added to the apical part （90 min）， followed by stimulation with lipopolysaccharide （1 μg/mL， 24 h）. PS-FS alleviated rectal bleeding and rebalanced pro- (tumor necrosis factor α， interleukin （IL）-6， and IL-8) and anti-inflammatory cytokines （IL-10）. Additionally， PS-FS ameliorated histopathological damage and enhancing occludin expression. A reduction in oxidative stress was evidenced by decreased myeloperoxidase activity and reactive oxygen species production. The anti-inflammatory mechanism included suppressing cyclooxygenase 2 expression， reducing prostaglandin e2production， and inhibiting the phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of the nuclear factor κB p65 subunit. This study reveals the potential of PS-FS as a therapeutic intervention for colitis. The alignment between in vivo and in vitro outcomes substantiates the appropriateness of the co-culture model to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of foods.
