The Effects of Water Recycling on Flotation at a North American Concentrator—Part 1

Water chemistry and its impact on mineral processing operations are not well understood and often not adequately monitored. CanmetMINING, as part of its water management research program, has been involved in a project initiated to identify opportunities for improving water recovery, water treatment, and recycling in the mining and mineral processing operations. One of the main objectives of this work is to evaluate and assess water chemistry and identify factors that impact mineral recovery, concentrate grade, and metal extraction efficiencies in order to understand and mitigate negative impacts of water recycling and improve process efficiency. In collaboration with a North American concentrator, CanmetMINING has been involved in assessing the water chemistry in the mill and evaluating water recycling options for select process streams to reduce fresh water intake and maximize recycling. The overall goal of the project is to investigate options for water recycling (increase the thickener overflow recirculation from thickener overflow tank) without affecting nickel and copper metallurgy. The results of the sampling campaigns showed that the water chemistry of the streams was fairly consistent throughout the year with no significant seasonal variations. The laboratory tests illustrated that when higher quantities of thickener overflow from thickener overflow were used, the nickel + copper grade versus nickel recovery curves shifted towards lower values. These observations were observed for the plant water samples obtained in April, June and August 2019.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is one of the most frequently performed procedures in gastrointestinal surgery *** complications due to vascular injuries represent an important cause of morbidity and mortality,especially when facing major bleeding during laparoscopy,where bleeding control can be technically challenging in inexperienced ***,the reported incidence rate of conversion to open surgery due to vascular lesions is approximately 0%-1.9%,with a mortality rate of approximately 0.02%.The primary aim of this article was to perform an up-to-date overview regarding the incidence and surgical management of vascular injuries during laparoscopic cholecystectomy according to the available scientific evidence.

Pancreatic head excavation for tissue diagnosis may reduce unnecessary pancreaticoduode- nectomies in the setting of chronic pancreatitis

BACKGROUND： The necessity to obtain a tissue diagnosis of cancer prior to pancreatic surgery still remains an open debate. In fact, a non-negligible percentage of patients under- going pancreaticoduodenectomy （PD） for suspected cancer has a benign lesion at final histology. We describe an approach for patients with diagnostic uncertainty between cancer and chronic pancreatitis, with the aim of minimizing the incidence of PD for suspicious malignancy finally diagnosed as benign disease. METHODS： Eighty-eight patients （85.4%） with a clinicoradio- logical picture highly suggestive for malignancy received for- mal PD （group 1）. Fifteen patients （14.6%） in whom preopera- tive diagnosis was uncertain between pancreatic cancer and chronic pancreatitis underwent pancreatic head excavation （PHEX） for intraoperative tissue diagnosis （group 2）： those diagnosed as having cancer received PD, whereas those with chronic pancreatitis received pancreaticojejunostomy （P]）. RESULTS： No patient received PD for benign disease. All pa- tients in group I had adenocarcinoma on final histology. Eight patients of group 2 （53.3%） received PD after intraoperative diagnosis of cancer, whereas 7 （46.7%） received PJ because no malignancy was found at introperative frozen sections. No signs of cancer were encountered in patients receiving PHEX and PJ after a median follow-up of 42 months. Overall survival did not differ between patients receiving PD for cancer in the group 1 and those receiving PD for cancer after PHEX in the group 2 （P=0.509）. CONCLUSION： Although the described technique has been used in a very selected group of patients, our results suggest that PHEX for tissue diagnosis may reduce rates of unnecessary PD, when the preoperative diagnosis is uncertain between cancer and chronic pancreatitis.

Carbon isotopes of graphite:Implications on fluid history

Stable carbon isotope geochemistry provides important information for the recognition of funda- mental isotope exchange processes related to the movement of carbon in the lithosphere and permits the elab- oration of models for the global carbon cycle. Carbon isotope ratios in fluid-deposited graphite are powerful tools for unravelling the ultimate origin of carbon （organic matter, mantle, or carbonates） and help to constrain the fluid history and the mechanisms involved in graphite deposition. Graphite precipitation in fluid-deposited occurrences results from C02- and/or CH4-bearing aqueous fluids. Fluid flow can be considered as both a closed （without replenishment of the fluid） or an open system （with renewal of the fluid by successive fluid batches）. In closed systems, carbon isotope systematics in graphite is mainly governed by Rayleigh precipi- tation and/or by changes in temperature affecting the fractionation factor between fluid and graphite. Such processes result in zoned graphite crystals or in successive graphite generations showing, in both cases, isotopic variation towards progressive 13C or 12C enrichment （depending upon the dominant carbon phase in the fluid, C02 or CH4, respectively）. In open systems, in which carbon is episodically introduced along the fracture systems, the carbon systematics is more complex and individual graphite crystals may display oscillatory zoning because of Rayleigh precipitation or heterogeneous variations of 613C values when mixing of fluids or changes in the composition of the fluids are the mechanisms responsible for graphite precipitation.

Short-term effects of post-fire mulching with straw or wood chips on soil properties of semi-arid forests

Few studies have compared the variability of soil properties using different types of mulches in semi-arid *** study evaluated the changes in physico-chemical soil properties in a semi-arid forest of Central Eastern Spain,where straw and pine wood chips were distributed as mulch three months after a *** were sampled under burned and unmulched and burned and mulched plots three and nine months after the *** data was processed using Principal Component Analysis(PCA)and Analytical Hierarchical Cluster Analysis(AHCA).Mulching with straw or wood chips did not have any significant effects on the texture and chemical properties of burned sites few months after the *** contrast,significant changes are expected over time in organic matter,nutrients and many *** were no significant differences in soil properties between the two *** low changes were confirmed by PCA coupled with AHCA,which did not show a clear distinction among the three soil ***,a noticeable and significant variability of many of these properties over time was *** study shows that mulching does not degrade of soil properties in the short-term after a wildfire and after post-fire treatments,and thus helps protect semi-arid forest ecosystems against the negative impacts of high-severity fires.

Exploring the factors influencing the hydrological response of soil after low and high-severity fires with post-fire mulching in Mediterranean forests

Despite ample literature,the influence of the individual soil properties and covers on the hydrological response of burned soils of forests has not clearly identified.A clear understanding of the surface runoff and erosion rates altered by wildfires and prescribed fires is beneficial to identify the most suitable post-fire treatment This study has carried out a combined analysis of the hydrological response of soil and its driving factors in burned forests of Central-Eastern *** pine stands of these forests were subjected to both prescribed fire and wildfire,and,in the latter case,to post-fire treatment with ***,simple multi-regression models are proposed to predict runoff and erosion in the experi-mental *** the case of the prescribed burning,the fire had a limited impact on runoff and erosion compared to the unburned areas,due to the limited changes in soil *** contrast,the wildfire increased many-fold the runoff and erosion rates,but the mulching reduced the hydrological response of the burned soils,particularly for the first two-three rainfalls after the *** increase in runoff and erosion after the wildfire was associated to the removal of the vegetation cover,soil water repellency,and ash left by fire;the changes in water infiltration played a minor role on runoff and *** multi-regression models developed for the prescribed fire were accurate to predict the post-fire runoff ***,these models were less reliable for predictions of the mean erosion *** predictions of erosion after wildfire and mulching were excellent,while those of runoff were not satisfactory(except for the mean values).These results are useful to better understand the relations among the hydrological effects of fire on one side and the main soil properties and covers on the other ***,the proposed prediction models are useful to support the planning activities of forest managers and hydrologists towards a more ef

Mapping Lunar Olivine Using Clementine Spectral Indices and Chemical Composition Parameters

Olivine exposures at the central peak of Copernicus crater of the Earth＇s Moon have been confirmed by telescope observations and Clementine spectra data. Using these exposures as training sites, this study used a method of combining two spectral indices （950 nm/750 nm and 2000 nm/1500 nm）, one maturity index （Is/feo）, and four chemical content indices （feo, Mg, Al, Ca）, through a decision tree classifier, to map olivine-rich units on the west lunar surface based on mosaicked Clementine image （500 m pixel size）. Most classified olivine exposures are found inside craters or on their rays, suggesting that olivine exposures are directly associated with the impact processes. The results have been validated in several selected sites, though further validations with data from the newest missions are strongly needed.

Evaluating Group Formation in Virtual Communities

In this paper, we are interested in answering the following research question: "Is it possible to form effective groups in virtual communities by exploiting trust information without significant overhead, similarly to real user communities?"In order to answer this question, instead of adopting the largely used approach of exploiting the opinions provided by all the users of the community(called global reputation), we propose to use a particular form of reputation, called local reputation. We also propose an algorithm for group formation able to implement the proposed procedure to form effective groups in virtual communities. Another interesting question is how to measure the effectiveness of groups in virtual communities. To this aim we introduce the index in a measure of the effectiveness of the group formation. We tested our algorithm by realizing some experimental trials on real data from the real world EPINIONS and CIAO communities, showing the significant advantages of our procedure w.r.t. another prominent approach based on traditional global reputation.
