On “Over-Sized” High-Gain Practical Observers for Nonlinear Systems

In this paper,it is shown that the performances of a class of high-gain practical observers can be improved by estimating the time derivatives of the output up to an order that is greater than the dimension of the system, which is assumed to be in observability form and, possibly, time-varying. Such an improvement is achieved without increasing the gain of the observers, thus allowing their use in a wide variety of control and identification applications.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLd),defined as the presence of fat accumulation in imaging or histology in more than 5%of hepatocytes and exclusion of other causes for secondary hepatic fat accumulation,is one of the major causes of chronic liver disease *** syndrome is associated with an increased risk of progression from NAFLd to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH),fibrosis,and forthcoming liver ***,genetic predisposition contributes to the risk of NAFLd *** review explores the role of diets and nutraceuticals in delaying the development and the evolution of NAFLd to chronic liver *** Mediterranean diet,high-protein diet,lowcarbohydrate/high-fat diet,high-carbohydrate/low-fat diet,and intermittent fasting are the dietary approaches investigated given the presence of relevant literature ***,this review focused on nutraceuticals with proven efficacy in ameliorating NAFLd and grouped them into four different categories:plant-based nutraceuticals(Ascophyllum nodosum and Fucus vesiculosus,Silymarin,Berberine,curcumin,Resveratrol,Nigella sativa,Quercetin),vitamin-like substances(vitamin E,vitamin d,vitamin c,coenzyme Q10,inositol),fatty acids(omega-3),and microbiota-management tools(probiotics).

Background:To study and compare the clinical optical image quality following implantation with different premium IOLs by analysing the point spread function(PSF)Strehl ratio using a pyramidal wavefront sensor(PWS)-based ***:This study included 194 eyes implanted with:(a)19 AcrySof SA60AT(control group);(b)19 Miniwell;(c)24 LENTIS Mplus LS-313 MF30;(d)33 LENTIS Mplus LS-313 MF15;(e)17 AkkoLens Lumina;(f)31 AT LISA Tri 839MP;(g)20 Precizon Presbyopic;(h)20 AcrySof IQ PanOptix;(i)11 Tecnis *** outcome measures were PSF Strehl ratio,PSF Strehl ratio excluding second-order aberrations(PSFw2),total root mean square(RMS),low-order aberration(LOA)and high-order aberration(HOA)RMS measured by PWS ***:AT LISA Tri had the highest PSFw2 Strehl ratio at both 3.0-and 4.0-mm pupil size(0.52±0.14 and 0.31±0.10;Pd by SA60AT(0.41±0.11 and 0.28±0.07)and PanOptix(0.4±0.07 and 0.26±0.04).AT LISA Tri was found to provide a significantly better retinal image quality than PanOptix at both 3.0 mm(Pd 4.0 mm(P=0.004).Mplus MF15 was found to be significantly better than Mplus MF30 at both 3.0 mm(Pd 4.0 mm(P=0.002).Total RMS,LOA RMS,HOA RMS,PSF Strehl ratio and PSFw2 varied significantly between the studied groups(Pconclusions:Far distance clinical image quality parameters measured by PWS aberrometer differed significantly according to the technology of the implanted *** LISA Tri,SA60AT and PanOptix showed the highest values of far distance retinal image quality,while the lowest PSFw2 Strehl ratios were displayed by Miniwell,Mplus MF30 and Precizon Presbyopic.

complex systems from different fields of knowledge often do not allow a mathematical description or modeling, because of their intricate structure composed of numerous interacting components. As an alternative approach, it is possible to study the way in which observables associated with the system fluctuate in time. These time series may provide valuable information about the underlying dynamics. It has been suggested that complex dynamic systems, ranging from ecosystems to financial markets and the climate, produce generic early-warning signals at the ＂tipping points,＂ where they announce a sudden shift toward a different dynamical regime, such as a population extinction, a systemic market crash, or abrupt shifts in the weather. On the other hand, the framework of Self- Organized criticality （SOc）, suggests that some complex systems, such as life itself, may spontaneously converge toward a critical point. As a particular example, the quasispecies model suggests that RNA viruses self-organize their mutation rate near the error-catastrophe threshold, where robustness and evolvability are balanced in such a way that survival is optimized. In this paper, we study the time series associated to a classical discrete quasispecies model for different mutation rates, and identify early-warning signals for critical mutation rates near the error-catastrophe threshold, such as irregularities in the kurtosis and a significant increase in the autocorrelation range, reminiscent of 1/f noise. In the present context, we find that the early-warning signals, rather than broadcasting the collapse of the system, are the fingerprint of survival optimization.

cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6(cdK4/6)inhibitors demonstrated activity in terms of progression-free survival(PFS)in advanced dedifferentiated liposarcoma(dd-LPS),a sarcoma with cdK4 ***4 overexpression is by far more common than amplification in sarcomas and it might be a rational target for cdK *** investigators of this study found that cdK4 overexpression,while not of cdKN2A,was the most consistent predictive factor for palbociclib efficacy in *** adult-type soft-tissue sarcoma,excluding dd-LPS,or bone sarcoma patients,progressing after at least one systemic line,whose tumors overexpressed cdK4,but not cdKN2A at baseline biopsy,were accrued in this single-arm phase II trial(EudracT number:2016-004039-19).With the main endpoint of a 6-month PFS rate,40%was considered promising in this *** was administered orally at 125 mg/day for 21 days in 28-day cycles.A total of 214 patients with 236 cdK4/cdKN2A determinations were assessed for prescreening,archival material(141),and screening,baseline biopsy(95).There were 28(29%)with favorable mRNA profiles from 95 screened patients at *** 23 enrolled patients,21 evaluable,the 6-month PFS rate was 29%(95%cI 9–48),and there were 6 patients out of 21 with a PFS longer than 6 *** median PFS and overall survival were 4.2(95%cI 3.6–4.8)and 12(95%cI 8.7–15.4)months,*** research showed a significant correlation between cdK4 mRNA and protein *** was active in a variety of sarcoma subtypes,selected by cdK4/cdKN2A,and deserves further investigation in the sarcoma context.

Gastrotomy closure with a new tissue anchoring device:A porcine survival study

AIM: To evaluate the feasibility, reproducibility and efficacy of a new tissue anchoring device in a porcine survival model. METHOdS: Gastrotomies were performed using a needle-knife and balloon dilator in 10 female Yorkshire pigs weighing 30-35 kg. Gastric closure was attempted using a new tissue anchoring device. The tightness of the closure was confirmed by means of air insufflation and the ability to maintain gastric distension with stability in peritoneal pressure measured with a Veress needle. All animals were monitored daily for signs of peritonitis and sepsis over 14 d. during necropsy, the peritoneal cavity and the gastric access site were ***: Transgastric access, closure and 14 d survival was achieved in all pigs. The mean closure time was 18.1 ± 19.2 min and a mean of 2.1 ± 1 devices were used. Supplementary clips were necessary in 2 cases. The closure time was progressively reduced (24.8 ± 13.9 min in the first 5 pigs vs 11.4 ± 5.9 min in the last 5, P = NS). At necropsy, the gastric access site was correctly closed in all cases with all brace-bars present. One device was misplaced in the mesocolon. Minimal adhesions were observed in 3 pigs and signs of mild peritonitis and adhesions in one. cONcLUSIONS: The use of this new tissue anchoring device in porcine stomachs is feasible, reproducible and effective and requires a short learning curve.

We revise the notion of von Neumann regularity in JB^＊-triples by finding a new characterisation in terms of the range of the quadratic operator Q（a）. We introduce the quadratic conorm of an element a in a JB^＊-triple as the minimum reduced modulus of the mapping Q（a）. It is shown that the quadratic conorm of a coincides with the infimum of the squares of the points in the triple spectrum of a. It is established that a contractive bijection between JBW^＊-triples is a triple isomorphism if, and only if, it preserves quadratic conorms. The continuity of the quadratic conorm and the generalized inverse are discussed. Some applications to c^＊-algebras and von Neumann algebras are also studied.

The discovery and realization of topological insulators,a phase of matter which hosts metallic boundary states when the ddimension insulating bulk is confined to(d−1)-dimensions,led to several potential ***,it was shown that protected topological states can manifest in(d−2)-dimensions,such as hinge and corner states for three-and two-dimensional systems,*** nontrivial materials are named higher-order topological insulators(HOTIs).Here we show a connection between spin Hall effect and HOTIs using a combination of ab initio calculations and tight-binding *** model demonstrates how a non-zero bulk midgap spin Hall conductivity(SHc)emerges within the HOTI *** this,we performed high-throughput density functional theory calculations to find unknown HOTIs,using the SHc as a *** calculated the SHc of 693 insulators resulting in seven stable two-dimensional *** work guides novel experimental and theoretical advances towards higher-order topological insulator realization and applications.
