Winter survival of microbial contaminants in soil:An in situ verification

The aim of the research was to evaluate, at site scale, the influence of freezing and freeze/thaw cycles on the survival of faecal coliforms and faecal enterococci in soil, in a climate change perspective. Before the winter period and during grazing, viable cells of faecal coliforms and faecal enterococci were detected only in the first 10 cm below ground, while,after the winter period and before the new seasonal grazing, a lower number of viable cells of both faecal indicators was detected only in some of the investigated soil profiles, and within the first 5 cm. Taking into consideration the results of specific investigations, we hypothesise that the non-uniform spatial distribution of grass roots within the studied soil can play an important role in influencing this phenomenon, while several abiotic factors do not play any significant role. Taking into account the local trend in the increase of air temperature, a different distribution of microbial pollution over time is expected in spring waters, in future climate scenarios. The progressive increase in air temperature will cause a progressive decrease in freeze/thaw cycles at higher altitudes, minimising cold shocks on microbial cells, and causing spring water pollution also during winter.

Quasi-freestanding graphene on Ni（110）： A graphene/ metal contact with suppressed interface states

Graphene/Ni（110） has been studied by time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure. The C ls core level shows a splitting typical of periodically rippled interfaces. The analysis of the C K-edge reveals that the interface states previously observed for graphene/Ni（111） are suppressed in graphene/Ni（110）. This suppression is due to the reduced hybridization of the Dirac-cone electrons in graphene with the d-bands of the （110）-oriented nickel contacts. Our results show that, contrary to commensurate growth of graphene on Ni（111）, epitaxially grown graphene on Ni（110） behaves as a quasi-freestanding sheet, as the lattice mismatch gives rise to a moir6 reconstruction.

Effect of steam-pretreatment combined with hydrogen peroxide on lignocellulosic agricultural wastes for bioethanol production：Analysis of derived sugars and other by-products

The hydrogen peroxide, a green impregnating agent suitable for lignocellulosic biomass to bioethanol process, was used to pretreat sugarcane bagasse by steam explosion. Two different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide（0.2% and 1%） were investigated. Then, the biomass was hydrolyzed after pretreatment using cellulase. The amount released of：（i） cellobiose;（ii） monosaccharides, as glucose, xylose, arabinose and mannose and（iii） lignocellulose derived by-products, as furans and small organic acids（acetic, formic,and levulinic acid）, was evaluated in the hydrolysate samples, previously pretreated both in the presence and absence of impregnating agent. By adding of hydrogen peroxide in steam-pretreatment, the average yield increase was 12% for glucose and as high as 34% for xylose, and cellobiose yield was decreased of about 30%. No significant increase has been observed in arabinose and mannose yield. Furthermore,the hydrogen peroxide seems not increased the formation of lignocellulose derived by-products during pretreatment process, with the exception of the levulinic acid.

Unusually strong lateral interaction in the CO overlayer in phosphorene-based systems

By means of vibrational spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT), we investigate CO adsorption on phosphorene-based systems. We find stable CO adsorption at room temperature on both phosphorene and bulk black phosphorus. The adsorption energy and vibrational spectrum are calculated for several possible configurations of the CO overlayer. We find that the vibrational spectrum is characterized by two different C–O stretching energies. The experimental data are in good agreement with the prediction of the DFT model and reveal the unusual C–O vibrational band at 165–180 meV, activated by the lateral interactions in the CO overlayer. Bismuth teUuride （Bi2Te3） is one of the most important commercial thermoelectric materials. In recent years, the discovery of topologically protected surface states in Bi chalcogenides has paved the way for their application in nanoelectronics. Determination of the fracture toughness plays a crucial role for the potential application of topological insulators in flexible electronics and nanoelectro- mechanical devices. Using depth-sensing nanoindentation tests, we investigated for the first time the fracture toughness of bulk single crystals of Bi2Te3 topological insulators, grown using the Bridgmantockbarger method. Our results highlight one of the possible pitfalls of the technology based on topological insulators.

A MULTI-AGENT SYSTEM FOR MANAGING THE QUALITY OF SERVICE IN TELECOMMUNICATIONS NETWORKS

In this paper we propose X-MAQoS, a novel XML-based multi-agent system for the QoS management in telecommunications networks. This system is characterized by the following features: (i) it handles a user profile and exploits it jointly with suitable network resource management techniques to maximize user satisfaction; (ii) it is capable of operating in a large variety of telecommunications networks; (iii) it is semi-automatic; (iv) it exploits XML for guaranteeing a light, versatile and standard mechanism for information representation, storing and exchange. In this paper the basic features of the system are discussed in details. Furthermore, the main results of a performance evaluation study in UMTS environment, aiming at comparing X-MAQoS with alternative agent-based approaches for handling user access to telecommunications networks, are reported.
