Objective mea.urements a.e required for computer-a.ded sperm morphometric a.a.ysis （Ca.Ma. ma.hines to distinguish norma. from a.norma. sperm hea.s. The morphometric cha.a.teristics of sperma.ozoa.in 72 sa.ples of semen a.d of sperma.ozoa.from 72 other semen sa.ples a.ter swim-up were qua.tified by the semi-a.toma.ed Integra.ed Sperm a.a.ysis System （ISa.） computer-a.ded system, which mea.ured the sperm hea. pa.a.eters length （L）, width （W）, a.ea.（a., perimeter （P）, a.rosoma. a.ea.（a.）, a.d the derived va.ues L/W a.d P/a. For ea.h ma. a.homogeneous popula.ion of distributions cha.a.terized semina. sperma.ozoa.（7 942 cells： media. va.ues L 4.4 μm, W 2.8μm a.9.8 μm^2, P 12.5 μm, a. 47.5%, L/W 1.57, P/a.1.27）, a.d there wa. no significa.t difference in within- a.d a.ong-individua. va.ia.ion. Different men could ha.e sperma.ozoa.of significa.tly different dimensions. Hea. dimensions for swim-up sperma.ozoa.from different men （4 812 cells） were simila. to those in semen, differing only by 2%-5%. The va.ues of L, Wa.d L/W fell within the limits given by the World Hea.th Orga.iza.ion （WHO）. a.though these sa.ples were not biologica.ly ma.ched, linea. mixed-effects sta.istica. a.a.yses permitted va.id compa.ison of the groups. a.subpopula.ion of 404 sperma.ozoa.considered to fit the stringent criteria.of WHO ‘norma.＇ semina. sperma.ozoa.from both semen a.d swim-up were cha.a.terized by media. va.ues （a.d 95% confidence interva.s） of L, 4.3 μm （3.8-4.9）, W, 2.9 μm （2.6-3.3）, a. 10.2μm^2 （8.5-12.2）, P, 12.4μm （11.3-13.9）, a., 49% （36-60）, L/W, 1.49 （1.32-1.67） a.d P/a. 1.22 （1.11-1.35）. These media. va.ues fa.l within the 95th centile confidence limits given by WHO, but the confidence interva.s for L a.d W were la.ger. a.though these differences in hea. dimensions a.ong men a.d a.ter swim-up could be detected by Ca.Ma. the sma.l differences ma.e it unlikely tha. technicia.s would be a.le to distinguish them. The va.ues could be used a. defa.lt sperm hea. va.ues for the Ca.MA

Introduction: Huma. chorionic gona.otropin (hCG) ha. a. importa.t role in the regula.ion of reproductive system a.d a.high ca.a.ity to stimula.e a.giogenesis by secretion of va.cula. endothelia. growth fa.tor (VEGF). It could be a.so used for medica. trea.ment of cryptorchidism, a. it stimula.es Leydig cells to produce testosterone, but its use ha. been discussed. a.m of the study wa. to eva.ua.e the testicula. morphologica. cha.ges due to cyclic a.ministra.ion of hCG possibly rela.ed to VEGF effect. Methods: 80 pre-pubera. ma.e Spra.ue-Da.ley ra.s were ra.domly divided in two groups hCG (50 U/I/ Kg) (n = 55/S) a.d pla.ebo (n = 25/C) trea.ed. The a.ima.s were sa.rificed respectively a.ter one (S1 n = 10;C1 n = 5), two (S2 n = 10;C2 n = 5) a.d three weeks of hCG or pla.ebo trea.ment (S3 n = 35;C3 n = 15);a.blood serum wa. obta.ned for eva.ua.ion of pla.ma.ic testosterone. The testis, prosta.es, epididymides a.d semina. vesicles were dra.n a.d weighted. Specimens were fixed in forma.in a.d coloured by hema.oxylin-eosin. Morphometric a.a.ysis of Leydig cell number, nuclea. a.ea.a.d perimeter wa. ca.ried out. Immunoistochemistry for VEGF ha. been performed with the a.idin-biotin peroxida.e technique. Sta.istica. differences between groups, ea.h of different a.e, were ca.cula.ing using Student’s T-test. Results: a.ter the first week of hCG trea.ment it ha. been observed a. increa.ed testicula. weight a.d volume (+/﹣6%) in experimenta. respect to control group. This result wa. not observed a.ter the second a.d third week of trea.ment. Significa.t va.ia.ions were a.so observed in the mea. prosta.e weight, wherea. mea. semina. vesicles weight wa. significa.t in the S2 a.d S3 groups respect to control. In the hCG trea.ed ra.s it ha. been observed a.poor differentia.ion of the seminiferous epithelium, with high Leydig cell evidence a.d increa.ed intertubula. eosinophilic ma.eria.. a. interstitia. edema.wa. demonstra.ed without infla.ma.ory cell cha.ges.
