Helicobacter pylori in dental plaque and stomach of patients from Northern Brazil

AIM: To establish whether virulence factor genes vacA and cagA are present in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) retrieved from gastric mucosa and dental plaque in pa-tients with dyspepsia. METHODS: Cumulative dental plaque specimens and gastric biopsies were submitted to histological exami-nation, rapid urease test and polymerase chain reac-tion (PCR) assays to detect the presence of cagA and vacA ***: Detection of H. pylori from dental plaque and gastric biopsy samples was greater by PCR com-pared to histological examination and the rapid ure-ase test. DNA from H. pylori was detected in 96% of gastric mucosa samples and in 72% of dental plaque samples. Sixty-three (89%) of 71 dental plaque sam-ples that were H. pylori-positive also exhibited identical vacA and cagA genotypes in gastric mucosa. The most common genotype was vacAs1bm1 and cagA positive, either in dental plaque or gastric mucosa. These viru-lent H. pylori isolates were involved in the severity of clinical ***: These pathogenic strains were found simultaneously in dental plaque and gastric mucosa, which suggests that gastric infection is correlated with the presence of H. pylori in the mouth.

Study on Zymomonas Mobilis Growth and Its Relationship with Glutaminase Production by Using Statistical Tools

Glutaminase is used industrially to enhance flavor and aroma and to enrich foodstuffs nutritionally. It also has potential for pharmaceutical application as anti-leukemia agent. The bacteria of Zymomonas mobilis has been studied for ethanol production, however, there is no study regarding glutaminase production. The aim of the present study was to establish the influencing factors for the growth of Z mobilis and its relationship with glutaminase production using statistical tools. Analysis of variance in blocks was carried out in a complete block design and the Tukey test demonstrated the importance of the components of the culture medium, absence of agitation and fermentation time. Minimum culture medium was used in the optimization varying the glucose concentrations （10, 30, and 50 g/L）, glutamine （0, 0.5 and 1g/L） and culture time （18, 24 and 30 hours）. Maximum production was obtained at 8.86 U/L glutaminase. Optimized conditions were used in the growth kinetics, where typical exponential growth was observed. Glutaminase production was shown to be related to biomass production.

The objective of this study was to evaluate supplemental organic chromium（Cr） to finishing lambs on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and meat quality. Eighteen Suffolk lambs（age（4.5±0.2） mon;（25.8±3.6） kg body weight（BW）） were randomly assigned to three levels of supplemental organic Cr（0.0, 0.2 and 0.4 mg kg^–1 dry matter（DM）） in a complete random design. Growth performance was evaluated for 70 d, and then lambs were slaughtered to study carcass characteristics and chemical composition of meat. Orthogonal contrasts were performed（contrast one-average level 0.2 ppm Cr vs. average level 0.4 ppm Cr; contrast two-level 0 vs. average levels（0.2＋0.4） ppm Cr）. Orthogonal polynomials were used to estimate the linear and quadratic effects of Cr concentrations. Growth and carcass performance were not affected by supplemental organic Cr. Muscle conformation and leg perimeter linearly increased（P〈0.05） as organic Cr level increased in the diet. Kidney fat decreased linearly（P〈0.05） as supplemental Cr increased. In Longissimus dorsi（LD）, the ash content decreased linearly, and shear force（kg cm^–2） increased（P〈0.05） as organic Cr level increased in the diet. It is concluded that organic Cr did not affect growth performance, but it improved positively the muscle conformation, reduced kidney fat, whereas in LD there was an increment in shear force in finishing carcass lambs.

We report on two cases of patients with fat-equivalent masses in computed tomography(CT),referred to our department for dynamic positron emission tomography/CT(dPET/CT)with18F-fluorodeoxyglucose(18FFDG)in order to investigate their *** qualitative and quantitative information,as derived from dPET/CTs,couldn’t exclude a high-grade liposarcoma:Visual evaluation,revealed a large hypermetabolic focus of intense18F-FDG uptake in each patient(average SUVs 8.3 and 11.3).Regression-based parametric imaging demonstrated an enhanced distribution volume,which correlates to perfusion,and a high phosphorylation rate that correlates to cell *** analysis,based on a two-tissue compartment model demonstrated an enhanced FDG transport k1and an enhanced phosphorylation rate k3.A non-compartmental approach based on fractal dimension revealed also enhanced ***,final diagnosis was based on biopsy,which revealed hibernoma,a benign brown fat *** adipose contains increased numbers of mitochondria and a high-rate of glucose ***,they have increased FDG *** evaluation of lipomatous lesions on CT,with high FDG uptake,should include the possibility of hibernoma as a differential diagnosis.

This article seeks to outline the main driving factors of organizational innovation within 19 Brazilian companies from both the public and private spheres, whose performances have stood out at national level. The study comprises one of the stages of APMNI, an assessment methodology for prizes, which emerged from the need for the National Quality Foundation＇s （FNQ） Technical Group for Innovation to disseminate the concept of innovation management to Brazilian organizations and universities. The technical group, coordinated by the FNQ and the Getulio Vargas Foundation - FGV/EAESP, is made up of the following organizations： AES, Ampla, Brasilata, Cemig, Coelba, Correios, Cummins, EDP, Embraer, FGV, Fibria, Fleury, GPC Quimica, Itau, Natura, Promon, Senac, Senai, and Volvo. The problem-situation discussed is that these organizations have different models, dimensions, factors, and scales for assessing innovation management, thus making it necessary to identify in the sample the common factors that drive organizational innovation.

Presacral masses are rare lesions and due to obscure anatomic location and etiological heterogeneity, they pose a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Literature is limited on the pain management of a parturient with presacral mass. We describe here a parturient in her second trimester with severe pain from a presacral mass. A high clinical acumen with early multidisciplinary involvement are needed to establish a diagnosis and provide treatment options for the well-being of the patient, minimize fetal teratogenicity, avoid chronic symptoms and long-term disability.

Composition and Thermal Behavior of Oils from Native Seeds and Fruits of Argentina and Uruguay

The purpose of this work was to study the thermal characterization of oils extracted from native seeds and fruits of the Argentina, Uruguayan region. This is important because it＇s necessary to find new applications for food industry. Uruguayan wild cardoon seed, Argentinian wild papaya seeds, Argentinian avocado pulp, Argentinian cherimoya seeds, Argentinian grapeseeds and four commercial brands of chia oils were studied. The thermal behaviors of the oils were analyzed on a differential scanning calorimetry （DSC）, TA Instrument, Q20 model equipped with an intercooler. These oils＇ thermal profiles presented differences, which are related to the compositions of fatty acids and triacylglycerols. The thermogram for the chia oil, with a high content of linolenic acid, presented a very important peak at about -40 ℃; whereas, the papaya oil with an oleic acid content of 74%, showed a peak at about -3 ℃. When comparing the thermal behaviors of these oils to commercial brand oils, it was found that the chia oil is similar to the flaxseed oil, the papaya similar to the olive oil and the avocado similar to the rice bran oil. The avocado oil, in particular, presents high solid content at cold store or winter temperatures, which would make its use in those conditions difficult （for example, a cosmetic cream or gourmet oil）. In conclusion, the thermal behavior of one oil sample as determined by DSC provides valuable information with regards to the possible use of new oils of American origin as replacement of usual commercial others.
