Spontaneous Luminescence Background in Living Nu/Nu Mice

Spontaneous light emission from living animals can overcome the investigated light signals in small animal luminescence imaging. Despite autofluorescence emission is well studied the spontaneous luminescence background is less known and its importance is growing due to the new born imaging techniques like Cerenkov Luminescence Imaging and Radionuclide Luminescence Imaging in which faint sources are often involved. In order to investigate the spontaneous emission we studied the background luminescence in vivo from health Nu/Nu mice in optical imaging acquisitions and we related it with the optical properties of the diet of the animals. In particular luminescence images of mice feed with normal diet used in animal facilities were acquired using a commercial optical imager. The intensity and the spectral features of the luminescence emission from the animal surface after sunshine exposition and after normal lighting laboratory conditions were measured. The same was done with the pellets of food used to feed the animals. We found a background emission from the entire animal surface and localized light sources in the abdominal/lumbar region. Their intensity can be modulated by the light exposition of the animals before the imaging session and decreases along the time when they are put in darkness. The comparison of the luminescence time decay of animals and pellets suggests that the light sources are related to the persistent luminescence of the molecules contained in the food. So ambient exposure before imaging is important for luminescence imaging in order to keep down the background. The optical properties of food are also important and it necessary to check them before to feed the animals not only in fluorescence imaging but also in luminescence imaging.

Microstructural Morphologies and experimental Growth Laws during Solidification of Monotectic and Hypermonotectic Al-Pb Alloys

AI-Pb alloys with monotectic and hypermonotectic compositions were directionally solidified under unsteady- state heat flow conditions. The cooling curves recorded during solidification allowed solidification thermal parameters such as the cooling rate （T）, growth rate （v） and thermal gradient （G） to be experimentally determined. Different microstructural patterns have been associated with the alloy solute content, i.e., AI-1.2 and 2.1 wt% Pb. A sequence of morphologies from the bottom to the top of the A1-1.2 wt% Pb alloy casting （monotectic） can be observed： Pb-rich droplets in the aluminum-rich matrix, followed by a region of microstructural transition formed by droplets and fibers and finally by a mixture of fibers and strings of pearls. A completely fibrous structure （without transition） has been observed along the entire AI-2.1 wt% Pb alloy casting （hypermonotectic）. The interphase spacing （λ） was measured along the casting length, and experimental correlations between λand experimental solidification thermal parameters have been established. Power laws with a -2.2 exponent expressing λ as a function of the growth rate, v, were found to better represent the fibrous growth of both AI-Pb alloys. Moreover, a single experimental law expressing λ as a function of both G and v was found to describe the fibrous growth of both the monotectic and the hypermonotectic alloys experimentally examined.

exploring the silvicultural and economic viability of gap cutting in Mediterranean softwood plantations

Gap cutting consists of the removal of all trees growing on a small surface, varying in size from 200 to 600 m2. In Italy, gap cutting has been successfully tested for introducing the natural regeneration of native species into softwood plantations, thus ac- celerating the transition towards climax hardwood stands. Depending on plantation types and conditions, gap cutting should be start- ed at an age between 70 and 80 years and the system should include at least 12 to 15 gaps, in order to produce enough wood to cover costs. Generally, natural regeneration is firmly established within 5-7 years from treatment. Gap cutting also offers superior results to selection thinning, the latter producing about 35% less value and incurring 25% to 30% more costs. As for all regeneration cuts, the success of gap cutting depends on wildlife control in order to prevent extensive damage to the regeneration.

The cold chain and the COVID-19 pandemic:an unusual increase in histamine content in fish samples collected in Southern Italy during lockdown

Objectives:We analysed 900 samples of fresh(250)and processed(650)fish products collected in Sicily(Southern Italy)in 2020 during the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)pandemic(hereafter:COVID-19).Materials and methods:The samples were divided temporally based on four phases relating to the various restrictions imposed by the Italian government in this *** validated method of ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography combined with a diode array detector was then employed for the ***:The samples collected during the Phase I lockdown period and after it had ended(Phase II)revealed significant increases in the mean histamine levels:(41.89±87.58)mg/kg and(24.91±76.76)mg/kg,*** 11(1.3%of the total)fresh fish samples that were identified as being non-compliant with Regulation(eC)No.2073/2005 were only found during these two *** the processed samples were always *** histamine values decreased as the restrictions eased,achieving a mean value of(11.16±9.3)mg/kg(Phase III).Conclusions:There was an increase in the incidence offish samples that were non-compliant with Regulation(eC)No.2073/2005 compared to previous surveillance *** results provide a first report on the effect of lockdown measures on food safety and the cold *** findings must cause food safety operators to intensify their controls over fresh fish products in such periods to safeguard consumer *** studies are required to evaluate whether the same trend would be observed with other food contaminants.

The multi-reactors network, a closed sequence of two or more catalytic fixed bed reactors with periodical change of the feed position, was studied by means of numerical simulations. Two advantages of such a reactor configuration, the possibility of exploiting the thermal storage capacity of the catalyst and the optimal temperature profile for exothermic equilibrium-limited reactions, were analyzed. The former feature acting as a regenerative heat exchanger was simulated in the case of the combustion of lean volatile organic compound (VOC) mixtures, with the possibility of multiple stability windows found when rich mixtures are fed. The latter was demonstrated using the methanol synthesis, with the enhancement of the conversion and product selectivity predicted. The influence of the number of the reactors in the network was pointed out. Some results obtained in the reverse-flow reactors were also presented for comparison.

The tyrosine kinase receptor vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 （VeG FR2） is a key regulator of angiogenesis. Here we show that VeGFR2 is acetylated in endothelial cells both at four lysine residues forming a dense cluster in the kinase insert domain and at a single lysine located in the receptor activation loop. These modifications are under dynamic control of the acetyltransferase p300 and two deacetyiases HDAC5 and HDAC6. We demonstrate that VeGFR2 acetylation essentially regulates receptor phosphorylation. In par- ticular, VeGFR2 acetylation significantly alters the kinetics of receptor phosphorylation after ligand binding, allowing receptor phos- phoryiation and intraceUular signaling upon proLonged stimulation with VeGF. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that acetylation of the lysine in the activation loop contributes to the transition to an open active state, in which tyrosine phosphorylation is favored by better exposure of the kinase target residues. These findings indicate that post-translational modification by acetyiation is a critical mechanism that directLy affects VeGFR2 function.

Granger Causality Analyses for Climatic Attribution

This review paper focuses on the application of the Granger causality technique to the study of the causes of recent global warming (a case of climatic attribution). A concise but comprehensive review is performed and particular attention is paid to the direct role of anthropogenic and natural forcings, and to the influence of patterns of natural variability. By analyzing both in-sample and out-of-sample results, clear evidences are obtained (e.g., the major role of greenhousegases radiative forcing in driving temperature, a recent causal decoupling between solar irradiance and temperature itself) together with interesting prospects of further research.
