Mutiparametric Characterization of Atmospheric Particulate in a Heavy-Polluted Area of South Italy

To obtain a real-time image of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) in highly polluted areas and to understand how the anthropogenic component linked to urban activities (industrial activities, domestic heating, road traffic, waste disposal) can locally affect near-surface measurement of PM, several measurement campaigns were achieved in the Campania region (Southern Italy) using both Lidar and in-situ instruments. A comparison between the obtained results highlights a good correlation between the data and the potential of remote sensing instruments for air quality monitoring. Data analysis was performed in terms of particle backscattering coefficient profile at 355 nm, PM mass concentration, and size distribution. Wind profiles, which covered a range of altitudes from 40 m to 290 m, were also used to study sources and physical processes involved. Measurement carried out in a rural area with a landfill site highlighted the presence of a homogeneous particulate layer throughout the sounded area due to winds driving aerosol from the landfill to the surrounding areas. The size distribution in mass concentration, highlighted a modal diameter moving towards 0.9 and 2 μm with a larger mass concentration of particles in the morning, before noon and in the afternoon when a large number of trucks delivered solid wastes. Moreover, large concentrations of particulate matter were measured in a small urban town with few industrial activities which peak (211 ± 33 μg·m-3) was measured in the direction of the most urbanized area, probably due to the lighting of the domestic heating systems. Bimodal size distribution in number concentration was measured, indicative of two types of atmospheric particles sources: gas and liquid combustion (particles with sizes below 80 nm), including vehicular traffic and domestic gas-heating, and biomass combustion (particles with sizes of the order of 200 - 500 nm). Quality and origin of mountain food products: the new European label as a strategy for sustainable development

Mountain farming provides high-quality food products due to the peculiar characteristics of the raw materials combined with traditional processing conditions. However, these products and their intrinsic characteristics are not clearly recognized by consumers on the market. Nowadays, Protected Designation of Origin(PDO), Protected Geographical Indication(PGI) and Traditional Specialities Guaranteed(TSG) certifications include products originating in mountain areas, even if a large part of mountain foodstuff is not protected by these certifications and foods not made in mountain areas are often labeled as ―mountain food products‖. For this reason, the European Union has set a specific Regulation in 2012 to recognize and protect mountain food and to make the consumers safer about the origin information. The objective of this paper is twofold: firstly, it presents the recent aspects related to European legislation of mountain food product; secondly, it aims at reviewing the main features of nutritional quality and technology of dairy and meat products, as the most widespread mountain food products, and the main protocols used to evaluate the authenticity of these food products. The promotion of mountain food product through a specific label and the use of tracing methods, which are able to verify the authenticity of the origin of these products, may play a pivotal role in increasing the consumer‘s loyalty towards these products and could be a way to boost a sustainable development of these economically marginal rural areas. However, the analytical protocols developed so far(stable isotopes, macro and microelements, radionuclides, spectroscopic, molecular techniques, volatile substances profile, terpenes) are in many cases still at the experimental level due to the extreme variability of the mountain origin of the products to be tested.

Liver resection versus radiofrequency ablation in the treatment of cirrhotic patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common type of primary liver tumor and its incidence is increasing worldwide. The study aimed to compare patients subjected to liver resection or radiofrequency ablation. METHODS: One hundred and forty cirrhotic patients in stage A or B of Child-Pugh with single nodular or multinodular hepatocellular carcinoma were included in this retrospective study. Among them, 87 underwent surgical resection, and 53 underwent percutaneous radiofrequency ablation. Patient charac-teristics, survival, and recurrence-free survival were analyzed. RESULTS: Recurrence-free survival was longer in the resection group in comparison to the radiofrequency group with a median recurrence-free time of 36 versus 26 months, respectively (P=0.01, HR=1.52, 95% CI: 1.05-2.25). In the resection group, median survival was 46 months, with the 1-, 3- and 5-year survival rates of 89.7%, 72.4% and 40.2%. In the radiofrequency group, median survival was 32 months, with the 1-, 3- and 5-year survival rates of 83.0%, 43.4% and 22.6% (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Surgical resection improves the overall survival and recurrence-free survival in comparison with radiofrequency ablation. New evidences are needed to define the real role of the percutaneous technique as an alternative to surgery.

本文采用气相色谱-质谱(GC-MS)定性定量分析研究王浆中的FAA。手性分离柱气相色谱(GC)分析出D-Aml的存在,蜂王浆中FAA总量为7.3mg/g,Pro、Lys、Glu、β-Ala、Asp和Ser是主要FAA,样品中D-Ser含量在检测限以下(0.1mg/g)。样品采集完后分成两部分,一部分立即冷冻,同时对其FAAs进行监测,另一部分分成两组分别置于室温和4℃下贮存3、6、10个月。结果显示,4℃下的FAA含量基本恒定,而室温下Pro和Lys在前3个月分别上升至6.8和3mg/g,6个月后又分别降至3和1mg/g。

Common Variants Associated to Type 2 Diabetes in the Italian Population

Genome-wide association studies have identified numerous genetic variants for type 2 diabetes (T2D). Most genetic loci discovered to date were studied in Caucasians or Asian ancestry, however, there are no data regarding a quite large Italian sample. Therefore, we investigated T2D genetic susceptibility of 143 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within 30 genes involved in glucose metabolism in a large Italian case-control study. For the study, 1875 Caucasian patients were selected from three Italian cohorts. Age, gender, BMI and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) values were collected. Population was split in cases and controls based on FPG values or T2D diagnosis. T2D subjects and whom with FPG higher that 126 mg/dL were recruited as cases whereas subjects with normal values of FPG were considered controls. In each subject 143 SNPs were genotyped. To evaluate the association between genetic variations and diabetes status, a logistic regression analysis, adjusted for age, sex and BMI, was performed. Overall, 948 (50.6%) had T2D. Twenty out of 143 variants within 11 different genes resulted significantly associated to T2D. Four of them were located into TCF7L2 gene and presented the highest odd ratio (from 1.42 to 1.57). At least two SNPs were located within KCNJ11, WFS1, ABCC8, JAZF1 and HNF1B genes and one SNP each was identified in ADAMTS9, IGF2BP2, FTO, G6PC2 and GCK genes. Our findings support the role of 11 genes involved in glucose homeostasis in T2D risk development in a large Italian population. We found that such genetic information may be advantageous for predicting T2D.

Objectives: To determine the prevalence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) shedding among women attending Italian colposcopy clinics and describe their lifestyle, demographic characteristics, genital symptoms and signs. Study design: A cross- sectional study was performed to assess shedding of HSV among 4565 women requiri ng a gynecological consultation. An amplified enzyme immunoassay that detects an HSV type-common glycoprotein D was used to reveal HSV shedding in cervical spe cimens. Statistical analysis was performed using Chi-square test and Student’s t test. Results: A prevalence of 7.8%was found among colposcopy clinic patient s. No significant differences regarding patients’average age, age at first sexu al intercourse, contraceptive method used, and number of sexual partners in the previous year were found between subjects with and without viral shedding (P >0. 05). The detection of a concomitant genital infection with Trichomonas vaginalis as well as the report of previous episodes of genital herpes (GH) were signific antly higher in the positive group (P <.0.01). Only 2.8%of the patients sheddin g HSV presented with vesicles and ulcers, with the majority of them being asympt omatic. Conclusion: This is the first Italian survey on genital herpes conducted among colposcopy clinic patients. Our data show that the prevalence of HSV shed ding in this study population is high and confirms that the disease is often asy mptomatic. The demographics and behavioural variables of women shedding HSV seem to differ from the ones assessed in high risk patients.

Antibodies directed against the β chain of the T cell receptor (anti- Vβ antibodies) are useful to identify the Vβ repertoire of T cells in various diseases and to quantify numbers of Vβ - bearing T cells. The goals of this study were to identify Vβ + cases of leukemic phase cutaneous T cell lymphoma (CTCL) and to compare the percentage of positive calls with other measures of blood tumor burden, i.e., lymphocyte subsets with a CD4+ CD7- and CD4+ CD26- phenotype and Se′ zary cell counts. Thirty- three of 49 (67% ) cases of leukemic CTCL reacted with an anti- Vβ antibody. When combined with reports from the literature, the frequency of Vβ 5 (probably Vβ 5.1) usage was relatively high when compared with Vβ 2that is also frequently expressed by normal CD4+ T cells. The percentage of Vβ + cells correlated to the percentage of CD4+ CD7- and CD4+ CD26- cells for cases in which the neoplastic cells were deficient in expression of CD7 and CD26, respectively, but not the Se′ zary cell count. We hypothesize that the increased Vβ 5.1 usage in CTCL may be the result of depletion of Vβ 2 and other Vβ - bearing T cells by staphylococcal superantigens prior to neoplastic transformation, resulting in a relative increase in the frequency of Vβ 5.1 usage in CTCL.
