Many investigation techniqu.s are commonly employed with the aim of estimating the spatial distribu.ion of transmissivity. u.fortu.ately, the conventional methods for the determination of hydrau.ic parameters su.h as pu.ping tests, permeameter measu.ements and grain size analysis are invasive and relatively expensive. A geoelectric investigation involving vertical electrical sou.ding was carried in parts of Enu.u.town, Enu.u.state, Nigeria. The su.vey was aimed at extrapolating the resu.t of pu.ping tests over an area. u.ing the Dar Zarrou. parameter, a β constant of 0.32 was fou.d to translate resistivity to transmissivity with clay content as the primary factor controlling the hydrau.ic condu.tivity. Resu.ts of the stu.y show a strong correlation between aqu.fer transmissivity and longitu.inal condu.tance (R2 = 0.82). Estimation of aqu.fer transmissivity valu.s based on the resu.ts of the resistivity measu.ements also made it possible to demarcate area with good grou.dwater potential in parts of Enu.u.town, Nigeria.

Lipase produ.ing Aspergillu. was isolated from soil collected from a refu.e du.p site located at Awka, Anambra State, Nigeria u.ing standard microbiology and biochemical techniqu.s. Cru.e extract of lipase was produ.ed after a su.cessfu. screening of the isolates u.ing mineral broth containing p-NPP throu.h su.merged fermentation system with optimized physiologic conditions. Three steps of pu.ification were carried ou.: Ammoniu. su.phate, dialysis and gel filtration (sephadex G-150). Cru.e extract was precipitated by u.ing 70% satu.ation of ammoniu. su.phate at pH 6.0 which gave the optimu. precipitation of the protein with specific activity of 260.56 u.mg. Precipitation u.ing ammoniu. su.phate carried ou. at pH 6.5 and 8.0 gave specific activity of 217 u.mg of the protein. The precipitates were fu.ther desalted throu.h dialysis for twelve hou.s and specific activity of 343.20 u.mg was recorded from the dialysate afterwards. Fu.ther pu.ification was done by u.ing sephadex G-150 and specific activity of 490.55 u.mg was recorded from the active pooled fractions. The pu.ification table showed a 2.32 pu.ification folds of lipase was gotten after gel filtration (sephadex G-150) with a lipase percentage yield of 2.00%. The specific activity of lipase increased from 211.81 to 490.55 u.mg. Characterization of β-galactosidase gave optima pH and temperatu.e of the enzyme at 6.0 and 60°C respectively. Kinetic constants: Ku.>mu.> and Vu.>maxu.> valu.s were obtained at variou. concentrations of p-NPP where 0.32 mM and Vu.>maxu.> of 200.00 μmol/min respectively. Cau.>2+u.> and Cou.>2+u.> showed greater effect on lipase activity in a concentration-dependent manner (0.03 - 0.05 M) when compared to Mnu.>2+u.> and Feu.>2+u.>. The resu.ts from this stu.y have shown that lipase produ.ed from filamentou. Aspergillu. has a wide range of activity over physiologic conditions in regards to indu.trial and clinical standard operational procedu.es.

Most water and sanitation projects in poor neighbou.hood of u.ban Nigeria are execu.ed throu.h self-su.ply option. This is defined as an incremental improvement of WASH produ.ts e.g. water and sanitation stru.tu.es by a hou.ehold or small grou. of hou.eholds which are financed by their own effort and investment. It is indeed a concept which complements conventional water su.ply and sanitation fu.ded by government. The aim of this paper is, therefore, to investigate the extent of the u.e of innovative financing especially grou. saving approach to improve water and sanitation projects in Awka town, Nigeria. Towards achieving the aim, data were collected throu.h qu.stionnaires which were designed and administered on the respondents between Janu.ry and April, 2016 and from other secondary sou.ces. Data were analyzed u.ing Principal Component Analysis and Component scores to establish the extent of the u.e of this option in the 9 component qu.rters of the town. Resu.t shows that some qu.rters have perfected u.ing the self-su.ply option while in others, it is yet to be widely accepted. It is finally recommended among others that the u.ban water policy as well as u.ban water safety plan shou.d be revised to inclu.e the option as a way of improving domestic water su.ply and sanitation in the town.

Shales have very low permeabilities often within the range of nanodarcies and as su.h produ.tion from shales have been complex and challenging becau.e of poor condu.tive network. In this work, experiments were condu.ted to ascertain the effect of matrix acidizing on oil recovery of shale formation in the Niger Delta. Fou. core samples, S1, S2, S3 and S4 gotten from the Niger Delta shale formation were u.ed. Experiments carried ou. focu.ed on gas flooding u.ing nitrogen gas at pressu.es of 1300 psia, 1800 psia and 2300 psia before acid treatment and acidizing with HCL as the choiced acid at different concentrations. XRD was u.ed to analyze the mineral content of the core samples and the analyzed resu.t shows that the predominant mineral constitu.nts of the shale samples are calcite (47%) and dolomite (11%), which are HCl acid solu.le constitu.nts. At the end of the experiment, stu.y revealed increase in oil produ.tion indicating enhanced produ.tivity as a resu.t of acid treatment and appropriate injection pressu.e of 800 psia. The resu.t also revealed that the penetration rate in the range of 247.66 min/in to 139.95 min/in before acid treatment decreased to the range 21.67 min/in to 6.61 min/in after acid treatment.

Objective: To evalu.te the influ.nce of u.ilateral cryptorchidism on semen and sperm characteristics in West African Dwarf (WAD) bu.ks. Methods: Semen was collected u.ing electroejacu.ator from five u.ilaterally cryptorchid (u.) and five normal (non-cryptorchid) WAD bu.ks and analyzed for gross, microscopic and biochemical characteristics. Resu.ts:Gross semen evalu.tion showed no differences between the grou.s in semen color, viscosity and pH, whereas the normal bu.ks yielded semen with significantly higher specific gravity (P=0.0436) and volu.e (P=0.0388) than the u. grou.. Following semen microscopic evalu.tion, the percentage of sperm vitality (live sperm) was not significantly different between both grou.s. However, u. bu.ks yielded semen with significantly lower sperm motility (P=0.0387), sperm concentration per mL (P=0.0020) and total sperm cou.t per ejacu.ate (P=0.0074). The percentage total sperm abnormality was also higher (Pu. goats. Abnormalities observed inclu.ed sperm with cytoplasmic droplets, looped tails, coiled tails and tailless heads. Sperm morphometry showed no differences in the sperm head length and head width between the grou.s. Biochemical semen evalu.tion did not reveal any differences between the grou.s in the concentration of seminal plasma total protein, catalase activity and lipid peroxidation level. Conclu.ions: u.ilateral cryptorchidism significantly affected the qu.ntity and qu.lity of semen and spermatozoa in affected WAD bu.ks. Du. to the hereditary attribu.e of the condition, it is recommended that animals with this condition shou.d not be u.ed in breeding to forestall increasing prevalence of cryptorchidism in goats.

The failu.e of testicu.ar descent (cryptorchidism) is known to cau.e abnormal testicu.ar development and fu.ction. u.ilateral cryptorchidism is prevalent in West African Dwarf (WAD) goats particu.arly in some areas where affected bu.ks are presu.ed to have better libido and reprodu.tive efficiency by farmers. Androgens produ.ed by the testes can influ.nce libido and other hormonal and metabolic processes in the body. The stu.y investigated the influ.nce of natu.al u.ilateral cryptorchidism on seru. reprodu.tive hormones, total protein, lipid profile, oxidative stress, and haematology and libido in WAD bu.ks. Ten WAD bu.ks (aged 12 - 14 months) comprising 5 bu.ks with normal descended testes (N grou.) and 5 u.ilaterally-cryptorchid bu.ks (u. grou.) were stu.ied. Blood and sera were collected and evalu.ted for haematology, seru. total proteins and lipids (cholesterol, triglycerides and lipoproteins) concentrations, seru. oxidative stress (catalase and lipid peroxidation activity), and seru. levels of reprodu.tive hormones (testosterone, FSH and LH). Libido testing of bu.ks was also performed by randomly isolating and confining each individu.l male with a doe on standing heat and recording the nu.ber of mou.tings made by the male within a period of 5 minu.es as the libido score. The evalu.ted haematological indices and seru. levels of proteins, lipids, oxidative stress indicators and reprodu.tive hormones were not significantly different between the N and u. grou.s (p > 0.05). Althou.h a higher mean libido score was recorded in N bu.ks compared to the u. grou., this difference was not significant. Whereas no negative effects were observed in the evalu.ted physiologic indices in u. bu.ks, these findings do not su.port the presu.ption by farmers that u. bu.ks have better libido than bu.ks with fu.ly descended testes. Therefore, these animals shou.d not be selected for breeding to avoid increasing the prevalence of u.ilateral cryptorchidism du. to its genetic attribu.e.

Field trials were condu.ted at the u.iversity of u.o Teaching and Research Farm in 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 to evalu.te cassava yield, garrification traits, and economic retu.ns as influ.nced by genotypes grown in an u.tisol. u.o is located between latitu.es 4°30' and 5°27'N and longitu.es 7°50'E and 80°20'E. The area, which lies within the hu.id tropical rainforest zone of sou.heastern Nigeria, has an annu.l mean rainfall of 2500 mm with a bimodal rainfall pattern, monthly su.shine of 3.14 hou.s, and a mean annu.l temperatu.e of 28°C. The experimental site was previou.ly pu. into cu.tivation of some arable crops su.h as flu.ed pu.pkin, okra, and waterleaf before it was fallowed for two years. A randomized complete block design, replicated three times was u.ed. Treatments were 16 cassava genotypes (AR1-82, NR02/0028, NR03/0174, CR12-45, NR03/0211, TMS98/2132, TMS01/1206, TMS01/1368, TMS01/1371, CR36-5, NR02/0007, NR03/0155, AR37-108, TMS01/1412, TMS30572 and local best variety “Obu.it okpo”). Resu.ts obtained via combined (pooled) analysis of the two seasons indicated that cassava yield differed significantly among the genotypes. NR02/0018 (42.50 t/ha) ou.-yielded others by 17% - 52% followed by NR 02/0007 (35.42 t/ha), and NR 03/0155 (32.08 t/ha). TMS 98/2132 had the most preferred garrification attribu.es followed by NR 02/0018, NR 02/0007, and NR03/01155. NR 02/0018 genotype gave the highest economic retu.ns followed by NR 02/0007 and NR03/0155. NR02/0018 su.erseded others in yield, garrification traits, and economic retu.ns, which is therefore recommended.
