Effect of Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria at Various nitrogen Rates on Corn Growth

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) colonize plant roots and promote plant growth by producing and secreting various chemical regulators in the rhizosphere. With the recent interest in sustainable agriculture, an increasing number of researchers are investigating ways to improve the efficiency of PGPR use to reduce chemical fertilizer inputs needed for crop production. Accordingly, greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate the impact of PGPR inoculants on biomass production and nitrogen (n) content of corn (Zea mays L.) under different n levels. Treatments included three PGPR inoculants (two mixtures of PGPR strains and one control without PGPR) and five n application levels (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of the recommended n rate of 135 kg n ha−1). Results showed that inoculation of PGPR significantly increased plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, and root morphology of corn compared to no PGPR application under the same n levels at the V6 growth stage, but few differences were observed at the V4 stage. PGPR with 50% of the full n rate produced corn biomass and n concentrations equivalent to or greater than that of the full n rate without inoculants at the VT stage. In conclusion, mixtures of PGPR can potentially reduce inorganic n fertilization without affecting corn plant growth parameters. Future research is needed under field conditions to determine if these PGPR inoculants can be integrated as a bio-fertilizer in crop production nutrient management strategies.

Case of Unusual Abscess Localization in Lumbar Pott’s Disease

In Pott’s disease, cold abscesses usually sit and spread along the psoas muscle. This case concerned a 60 years old man who came to us with bilateral lomboradicular pain and a swelling of inguinal area and the anterior part of the left thigh. We found a 2 years long lasting story of low back pain complaint. Physical examination showed good general health status, stiffness of lumber spine, a left psoitis and no neurological deficit. CT scan going downward from the lumbar spine to the pelvic region and femoral limb with coronal reconstruction demonstrated a huge disco-vertebral destruction of L2-L3 with translation, and bilateral paramedian psoas abscess migrating subfascially toward Scarpa triangle and cleaving anteriorly mainly muscles of the left thigh. After 12 months medical treatment, the evolution has been favorable with clinical cure. The localization of the cold abscess in the left thigh anterior muscles compatment is uncommon. It is why we report this case.

Genistein Mitigates the Gastro-Toxic Effects of Bisphenol A in Male Wistar Rats

Exposure to Bisphenol A (BPA) worldwide is on the increase. Its toxicities in various tissues expressing estrogen receptors have been reported. However, limited information exists on its effects on the gastric tissue. This study therefore investigated the gastric effects of BPA exposure and the likely ameliorative potential of genistein, a phytoestrogen antioxidant, known to interact with estrogen receptors. Eighty-four male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 6 groups (n = 14) and orally treated for 28 days. Group I-IV received distilled water (0.2 ml), corn oil (3 ml/kg), BPA (50 mg/kg) and genistein (50 mg/kg) respectively. Group V was pre-treated daily with BPA one hour prior to genistein administration while Group VI was pre-treated daily with genistein one hour prior to BPA treatment. Thereafter, blood was collected into heparinized bottles for hematological analysis. Gastric juice was collected for pH and electrolytes determination. Gastric tissue was excised and analyzed for superoxide dismutase (SOD), reduced glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde, nitric oxide (nO), mucin, parietal and mucous cell counts, and histology. The BPA only treatment group exhibited significant increases (p n white blood cell count, neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio, mucin concentration, nO, and malondialdehyde while gastric juice pH, bicarbonate, SOD, and GSH levels were reduced compared to control. The gastric mucosa also showed pathologies consistent with inflammation. Genistein pre-and post-treatment in BPA exposed rats significantly (p ns of gastric inflammation were still evident in the mucosal samples. Bisphenol A induces gastro-toxicity by increasing gastric acidity, reducing gastric juice bicarbonate level and disrupting prooxidant/antioxidant balance. Genistein pre- and post-treatment ameliorated these gastro-toxic effects of Bisphenol A via gastroprotective, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms.

Compression and relaxation properties of timothy hay

Assessment of soil quality using soil organic carbon and total nitrogen and microbial properties in tropical agroecosystems

Assessment of soil quality is an invaluable tool in determining the sustainability and environmental impact of agricultural ecosystems. The study was conducted to assess the quality of the soils under arable cultivation, locally irri-gated and non-irrigated, forestry plantations of teak (Tectona grandis Lin.) and gmelina (Gme- lina arborea Roxb.), and cashew (Anacardium occidentale Lin.) plantation agro ecosystems using soil organic carbon (SOC), soil total ni-trogen (STn) and soil microbial biomass C (SMBC) and n (SMBn) at Minna in the southern Guinea savanna of nigeria. Soil samples were collected from soil depths of 0-5 cm and 5-10 cm in all the agro ecosystems and analyzed for physical, chemical and biological properties. All the agro ecosystems had similar loamy soil texture at both depths. The soils have high fer-tility status in terms of available phosphorus and exchangeable calcium, magnesium and po- tassium. The irrigated arable land had significantly (P 6.6 suggesting fungal domination in all the agroecosystems. The forestry plantation soils had higher SMBC and SMBn as a per-centage of SOC and STn respectively than the cultivated arable land soils. Burning for clearing vegetation and poor stocking of forestry planta-tions may impair the quality of the soil. The study suggests that the locally irrigated agro- ecosystem soil seems to be of better quality than the other agroecosystem soils.
