Highly repeatable,nondestructive,and high-throughput m.asures of above-ground biom.ss(AGB)and crop growth rate(CGR)are im.ortant for wheat im.rovem.nt *** study evaluates the repeatability of destructive AGB and CGR m.asurem.nts in com.arison to two previously described m.thods for the estim.tion of AGB from.LiDAR:3D voxel index(3DVI)and 3D profile index(3DPI).Across three field experim.nts,contrasting in available water supply and com.rising up to 98 wheat genotypes varying for canopy architecture,several concurrent m.asurem.nts of LiDAR and AGB were m.de from.jointing to *** correlations at discrete events between AGB and the LiDAR-derived biom.ss indices were significant,ranging from.0.31(Pm.ss indices at discrete events was at least sim.lar to and often higher than AGB,particularly under water *** correlations between calculated CGR for AGB and the LiDAR indices were m.derate to high and varied between ***,across all experim.nts,the repeatabilities of the CGR derived from.the LiDAR indices were appreciably greater than those for AGB,except for the 3DPI in the water-lim.ted *** our experim.nts,the repeatability of either LiDAR index was consistently higher than that of AGB,both at discrete tim. points and when CGR was *** findings provide prom.sing support for the reliable use of ground-based LiDAR,as a surrogate m.asure of AGB and CGR,for screening germ.lasm.in research and wheat breeding.

Dear Editor, Potyviruses such as Papaya ring-spot virus （PRSV） cause im.ortant yield losses in cucurbits. Two distinct resistant alleles were identified in the Cucum.s m.lo germ.lasm. Accession PI 414723 （Supplem.ntal Table 1） possesses m.no- genic resistance, controlled by the Prv2 allele, and reacts to PRSV by system.c necrotic lesions; plants with the PryI allele, described in cultivar Wm.-29, rem.in sym.tom.ess （Pitrat and Lecoq, 1983）. Fusarium.oxysporum.f. sp. m.lonis （FUS） exclusively attacks m.lon, causing severe wilt. m.nogenic dom.nant resistance was described against races O, 1, and 2. The Fore-2 gene, controlling resistance to races 0 and 1, was cloned by Joobeur et al. （2004）, and encodes a nucleotide bindina dom.in （NB）-Ieucine rich repeat （LRR） protein.

The review article describes the criteria established for m.thodology of antisense anti IGF-I therapy of m.lignant tum.rs, particularly of glioblastom.. The cancer patients, after classical therapy of surgery, radiotherapy and chem.therapy, have undergone the injection of genetically m.dified autologous m.lignant cells—transfected by IGF-I antisense/triple helix expression vectors. For all cancer patients supervised for up to 19 m.nths, the period corresponding to m.nim.m.survival of glioblastom. patients, the following com.on im.une criteria for “anti IGF-I” strategy were adm.tted: 1) characteristics of cell “vaccines”—absence of IGF-I and expression of m.C-I in cloned transfected cells;2) the peripheral blood lym.hocytes, PBL cells, rem.ved after every of two successive vaccinations, dem.nstrate an increasing level of CD8+ and CD8+28+ m.lecules (with a switch from.CD8+11b+ to CD8+11b-).

The addition of m.croalloying elem.nts (m.E) to low C-m.-Si HSLA steels has led to m.ny benefits to the producers,fabricators and *** im.rovem.nts such as m.crostructural refinem.nt,higher dislocation and sub-grain boundary densities and finer m.A-C distributions have led to higher strength,im.roved toughness and better *** im.rovem.nts can often be traced to the m. *** steels for load-bearing applications,the com.ination of m.E with hardenability additions (Cr,m.,B,etc.) and lower transform.tion tem.eratures has led to m.ch higher strength levels than what were available a few years *** resulting nonpolygonal,bainitic and m.rtensitic ferrite m.crostructures have not only higher strengths but also adequate levels of im.roved ductility and *** strip,plate and pipe applications have benefitted from.these *** im.rovem.nts have been found in the m.croalloyed forging steels,where the change from.pearlite-ferrite to bainitic ferrite m.crostructures has led to higher strengths and im.roved high-cycle fatigue resistance,with little penalty in ductility and *** the cold rolled gauges,both the so-called Advanced High Strength Steels (DP,TRIP and Com.lex Phase Steels) and the m.rtensitic direct-quenched and press-quenched steels,along with the Interstitial-Free steels,have benefited from.m.E additions,especially in the very popular zinc-coated sheet *** paper will briefly review each of these topic areas,and the underlying physical m.tallurgy will be discussed.

Architectural heritage com.rises one o the m.st im.ortant elem.nts of m.untain settlem.nts in Greece. It holds high cultural value, represents the tangible continuation of the past and form. the unique character and identity of each m.untain region. Yet, controversy regarding funding for its preservation often arises. In this paper, we used two Contingent Valuation surveys to estim.te the socia benefit deriving from.protecting the traditiona architecture in the m.untainous village of Sirako and through it, to exam.ne perceptions and attitudes o local residents and visitors. Research findings revealed a strong social will in favor of the good＇s protection followed by high percentages of positive willingness to pay（WTP）. However, WTP is significantly higher am.ng residents. Cultura heritage value, of the good, appears to prevail, along with the environm.ntal one. However, both residents and visitors pointed out that local heritage, if wellpreserved, will boost tourism.developm.nt. Residents appeared to better recognize the true level o architectural decay, expressed higher apprehension for its protection and were willing to pay higher am.unt of m.ney. Tourists, on the other side expressed high satisfaction for their visit, appreciated the beauty and serenity em.rging from.local built and natural environm.nt and spent several days visiting the surrounding area. The longer they stayed and gotfam.liar with the village, the m.re willing they were to contribute to local heritage＇s protection. Percentages reflecting indifference for protecting architecture were extrem.ly low. Yet, they were higher am.ng tourists. Traditional architecture is considered as public good; an opinion resulting in an im.ortant percentage of visitors stating that national governm.nt should provide the necessary funding. Phytochem.cal and antioxidant activities of Rum.x crispus L. in treatm.nt of gastrointestinal helm.nths in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

Objective: To evaluate the antioxidant activities and phytochem.cal content of the leaf and root extracts of Rum.x crispus using the solvents extraction; m.thanol extract,ethanol extract, acetone extract(ACE), and water ***: Total flavonoids content, total phenolic content, and total proanthocyanidin were evaluated using spectrophotom.tric equivalents of the standards, quercetin, gallic acid and catechin respectively. The antioxidant activities of the plant extracts were determ.ned using ABTS, DPPH, ferric reducing antioxidant power, total antioxidant capacity and nitric oxide scavenging ***: The flavonoids and phenols contents of the extracts were in the range of(19.39 ± 4.08) to(526.23 ± 17.52) m. QE/g and(16.95 ± 12.03) to(240.68 ± 3.50) m. GAE/g, respectively. ACE of the leaf has the highest value of total flavonoids content(526.23 ± 17.52) m. QE/g while ACE of the root has the highest value of total phenolic content(240.68 ± 3.50) m. GAE/g. The highest content of total proanthocyanidin(645.38 ± 1.33) m. CE/g was in ACE of the root. Significant am.unts of saponin and alkaloid were also present in the root and leaf extracts. All solvent fractions showed significant antioxidant activities(P m./m.L, m./m.L, 0.048 m./m.L,0.067 m./m.L, and 0.075 m./m.L, respectively).Conclusions: In this study, the m.an phytochem.cal content of the root of Rum.x crispus is higher than that of the leaf and this m.y have contributed to its high antioxidant activities. This m.y also justify the frequent use of the root m.re than the leaves in traditional m.dicine for the cure of helm.nthic infections.

National trends in total hip arthroplasty for traum.tic hip fractures:An analysis of a nationwide all-payer database

BACKGROUND Hem.arthroplasty(HA)has traditionally been the treatm.nt of choice for elderly patients with displaced fem.ral neck *** treatm.nt for younger,am.ulatory patients is not as *** hip arthroplasty(THA)has been increasingly utilized in this population however the factors associated with undergoing HA or THA have not been fully *** To exam.ne what patient characteristics are associated with undergoing THA or *** determ.ne if outcom.s differ between the *** We queried the Nationwide Inpatient Sam.le(NIS)for patients that underwent HA or THA for a fem.ral neck fracture between 2005 and *** NIS com.rises a large representative sam.le of inpatient hospitalizations in the United *** Classifications of Disease,Ninth Edition(ICD-9)codes were used to identify patients in our *** variables,hospital characteristics,payer status,m.dical com.rbidities and m.rtality rates were com.ared between the two *** logistic regression analysis was then perform.d to identify independent risk factors of treatm.nt *** Of the total 502060 patients who were treated for fem.ral neck fracture,51568(10.3%)underwent THA and the incidence of THA rose from.8.3%to 13.7%.Private insurance accounted for a higher percentage of THA than *** increased m.st in urban teaching hospitals relative to urban non-teaching *** length of stay(LOS)was longer for *** m.an charges were less for HA,however charges decreased steadily for both *** had a higher m.rtality rate,however,after adjusting for age and com.rbidities HA was not an independent risk factor for ***,private insurance was an independent predictor for treatm.nt with *** There has been an increase in the use of THA for the treatm.nt of fem.ral neck fractures in the United States,m.st notably in urban *** and THA are decreasing in total charges and LOS.
