Potassium carbonate-based ternary transition temperature mixture(deep eutectic analogues)for CO_(2)absorption:Characterizations and DFT analysis

Is it possible to improve CO_(2)solubility in potassium carbonate(K_(2)CO_(3))-based transition temperature mixtures(TTMs)?To assess this possibility,a ternary transition-temperature mixture(TTTM)was prepared by using a hindered amine,2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol(AMPD).Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR)was employed to detect the functional groups including hydroxyl,amine,carbonate ion,and aliphatic functional groups in the prepared *** thermogravimetric analysis(TGA),it was found that the addition of AMPD to the binary mixture can increase the thermal stability of *** viscosity findings showed that TTTM has a higher viscosity than TTM while their difference was decreased by increasing *** addition,Eyring’s absolute rate theory was used to compute the activation parameters(∆G^(*),∆H^(*),and ∆s^(*)).The CO_(2)solubility in liquids was measured at a temperature of 303.15 K and pressures up to 1.8 *** results disclosed that the CO_(2)solubility of TTTM was improved by the addition of *** the pressure of about 1.8 MPa,the CO_(2)mole fractions of TTM and TTTM were 0.1697 and 0.2022,*** confirm the experimental data,density functional theory(DFT)was *** the DFT analysis,it was found that the TTTM+CO_(2)system has higher interaction energy(|∆E|)than the TTM+CO_(2)system indicating the higher CO_(2)affinity of the former *** study might help scientists to better understand and to improve CO_(2)solubility in these types of solvents by choosing a suitable amine as HBD and finding the best combination of HBA and HBD.

Bushfire-related building losses cause adverse economic impacts to countries prone to *** materials and components play a vital role in reducing these ***,due to high costs of experimental studies and lack of numerical studies,the heat transfer behavior of building’s external components in bushfire-prone areas has not been adequately *** large-scale heat transfer models are developed using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD)tools,and the availability of CFD models for heat transfer in building components improves the understanding of the behavior of systems and systems of ***,this paper uses a numerical modeling approach to investigate the bushfire/wildfire resistance of external Light gauge steel Framed(LsF)wall *** full-scale and small-scale heat transfer models were developed for the LsF wall *** results of six internal and external LsF wall systems with varying plasterboard thickness and cladding material were used to validate the developed *** study was then extended to investigate the bushfire resistance of seven external wall systems under two different bushfire flame zone *** results illustrate the significant effects of fire curves,LsF wall components and configuration on the heat transfer across the *** have shown 1)the favorable performance of steel cladding and Autoclaved Aerated Concrete(AAC)panels when used on the external side of wall systems and 2)the adequacy of thin-walled steel studs’load-bearing capacity during bushfire *** study has shown that most of the investigated external LsF walls could be reused with cost-effective retrofitting such as replacing the Fire side(Fs)steel cladding after bushfire ***,this study has advanced the understanding of the behavior of external light steel framed walls under bushfire flame zone conditions.

A probabilistic approach for predictive congestion control in wireless sensor networks

Any node in a wireless sensor network is a resource constrained device in terms of memory, bandwidth, and energy, which leads to a large number of packet drops, low throughput, and significant waste of energy due to retransmission. This paper presents a new approach for predicting congestion using a probabilistic method and controlling congestion using new rate control methods. The probabilistic approach used for prediction of the occurrence of congestion in a node is developed using data traffic and buffer occupancy. The rate control method uses a back-off selection scheme and also rate allocation schemes, namely rate regulation(RRG) and split protocol(sP), to improve throughput and reduce packet drop. A back-off interval selection scheme is introduced in combination with rate reduction(RR) and RRG. The back-off interval selection scheme considers channel state and collision-free transmission to prevent congestion. simulations were conducted and the results were compared with those of decentralized predictive congestion control(DPCC) and adaptive duty-cycle based congestion control(ADCC). The results showed that the proposed method reduces congestion and improves performance.

Laboratory assessment of Alaska aggregates using Micro-Deval test

Aggregates suitable for use in asphalt concrete （AC） pavement construction must meet durability criteria. Thus, it is critical to select appropriate tests to properly characterize aggregate durability. In Alaska, durability tests currently being used for aggregates in AC pavement include Los Angeles （LA） abrasion test, sulfate soundness test and Washington degradation test. However, there have long been concerns arising over Washington degradation test used as an acceptance tool, motivating pavement practitioners to seek more suitable alternatives. This paper presents a study to investigate the feasibility of using Micro-Deval test, commonly used in other states, to evaluate the durability of Alaskan aggregates in AC pavement as well as its potential to replace Washington degradation test. Micro-Deval test, Washington degradation test and other tests currently specified in Alaska were conducted on aggregates from 16 batches representing statewide sources. Based on the testing results, it is found that using Micro-Deval test for durability assessment of Alaska aggregates was feasible and reproducible, and a high potential was revealed to use Micro-Deval test to replace Washington degradation test in Alaska. It is recommended that Micro-Deval test be considered as an additional test for a certain period, but in the long run should be used along with current LA abrasion and sulfate soundness tests to provide a more desirable durability assessment of Alaska aggregates used in AC pavement.

I/O Acceleration via Multi-Tiered Data Buffering and Prefetching

PacBio sequencing and Its Applications

single-molecule, real-time sequencing developed by Pacific Biosciences offers longer read lengths than the second-generation sequencing （sGs） technologies, making it well-suited for unsolved problems in genome, transcriptome, and epigenetics research. The highly-contiguous de novo assemblies using PacBio sequencing can close gaps in current reference assemblies and characterize structural variation （sV） in personal genomes. With longer reads, we can sequence through extended repetitive regions and detect mutations, many of which are associated with dis- eases. Moreover, PacBio transcriptome sequencing is advantageous for the identification of gene isoforms and facilitates reliable discoveries of novel genes and novel isoforms of annotated genes, due to its ability to sequence full-length transcripts or fragments with significant lengths. Addition- ally, PacBio＇s sequencing technique provides information that is useful for the direct detection of base modifications, such as methylation. In addition to using PacBio sequencing alone, many hybrid sequencing strategies have been developed to make use of more accurate short reads in conjunction with PacBio long reads. In general, hybrid sequencing strategies are more affordable and scalable especially for small-size laboratories than using PacBio sequencing alone. The advent of PacBio sequencing has made available much information that could not be obtained via sGs alone.

Potential distributional shifts in North America of allelopathic invasive plant species under climate change models

Predictive studies play a crucial role in the study of biological invasions of terrestrial plants under possible climate change *** species are recognized for their ability to modify soil microbial communities and influence ecosystem ***,we focused on six species of allelopathic flowering plants-Ailanthus altissima,Casuarina equisetifolia,Centaurea stoebe ***,Dioscorea bulbifera,Lantana camara,and schinus terebinthifolia-Xhat are invasive in North America and examined their potential to spread further during projected climate *** used species Distribution Models(sDMs)to predict future suitable areas for these species in North America under several proposed future climate *** and Maxent were used to develop sDMs,estimate current distributions,and predict future areas of suitable climate for each *** with the greatest predicted suitable climate in the future include the northeastern and the coastal northwestern regions of North *** size estimations demonstrate the possibility of extreme range loss for these invasives in the southeastern United states,while new areas may become suitable in the northeastern United states and southeastern *** findings show an overall northward shift of suitable climate during the next few decades,given projected changes in temperature and *** results can be utilized to analyze potential shifts in the distribution of these invasive species and may aid in the development of conservation and management plans to target and control dissemination in areas at higher risk for potential future invasion by these allelopathic species.

The “sequential cues hypothesis”: a conceptual model to explain host location and ranking by polyphagous herbivores

successfully locating a host plant is crucial for an insect herbivore to feed and/or ***,locating a host within a complex environment that may contain an array of different plant species is a difficult *** is particularly the case for polyphagous herbivores,which must locate a host within environments that may simultaneously contain multiple suitable and unsuitable *** we review the mechanisms of host selection used by polyphagous herbivores,as well as exploring how prior experience may modify a generalist's response to host *** show that recent research demonstrates that polyphagous herbivores have the capacity to detect both common cues from multiple host species,as well as specific cues from individual host *** creates a paradox in that generalists invariably rank hosts when given a choice,a finding at odds with the“neural limitations”hypothesis that says generalist insect herbivores should not have the neural capacity to identify cues specific to every possible *** explain this paradox we propose a model,akin to parasitoid host location,that postulates that generalist herbivores use different cues sequentially in host *** propose that initially common host cues,associated with all potential hosts,are used to place the herbivore within the host habitat and that,in the absence of any other host cues,these cues are sufficient in themselves to lead to host *** such they are true “generalist”***,once within the host habitat,we propose that the presence of a smaller group of cues may lead to further host searching and the location of preferred hosts:these are“specialist”*** model explains the current conflict in the literature where generalists can respond to both common and specific host-plant cues,while also exhibiting specialist and generalist host use behavior under different conditions.

Exploring willingness-to-pay for the restoration and maintenance of reserved forests in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana

In recent years, debates on the alarming rate of forest depletion emanating from growth in urban settlement and changed urban land-use patterns have gained prominence across the globe. The present study adopts a demandside management approach to investigate household’s willingness-to-pay for the restoration and maintenance of protected forest reserves in three municipalities in Ghana. Using survey data of 733 households from the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, we model the demand for forest restoration and maintenance, respectively, by means of the contingent valuation technique. As part of the findings, the study shows evidence that a household is willing to pay Gh￠50.99($8.67) and Gh￠31.12($5.29) per annum to restore and maintain the protected forests,respectively. These amounts constitute less than one percent of the average household income per ***, critical validity tests are conducted to validate the robustness of the results. This study provides willingness-to-pay estimates for forest and forest resources, and its associated determinants. These estimates seek to bridge the information gap and inform policy decisions toward the overarching aim of ensuring sustainable forest management in Ghana.

Numerical study of a hybrid absorption-compression high temperature heat pump for industrial waste heat recovery

The present paper aims at exploring a hybrid absorption-compression heat pump （HAC-HP） to upgrade and recover the industrial waste heat in the temperature range of 60℃-120℃. The new HAC-HP system proposed has a condenser, an evaporator, and one more solution pump, compared to the conventional HAC-HP system, to allow flexible utilization of energy sources of electricity and waste heat. In the system proposed, the pressure of ammonia-water vapor desorbed in the generator can be elevated by two routes; one is via the compression of compressor while the other is via the condenser, the solution pump, and the evaporator. The results show that more ammonia-water vapor flowing through the compres- sor leads to a substantial higher energy efficiency due to the higher quality of electricity, however, only a slight change on the system exergy efficiency is noticed. The temperature lift increases with the increasing system recirculation flow ratio, however, the system energy and exergy efficiencies drop towards zero. The suitable operation ranges of HAC-HP are recommended for the waste heat at 60℃, 80℃, 100℃, and 120℃. The recirculation flow ratio should be lower than 9, 6, 5, and 4 respectively for these waste heat, while the temperature lifts are in the range of 9.8℃-27.7 ℃, 14.9℃~4.1 ℃, 24.4℃-64.1 ℃, and 40.7℃-85.7℃, respectively, and the system energy efficiency are 0.35-0.93, 0.32-0.90, 0.25- 0.85, and 0.14-0.76.
