Methanol （CH3OH） is an important industrial chemical with a wide variety of uses. Industrial methanol synthesis catalysts are typically composed of Cu, Zn, and AI, but the use of catalysts incorporating rare earth elements has been shown to improve the catalytic performance. Due to their unique chemical and physical properties, the use of rare earth elements （scandium, yttrium, and the lanthanides） in catalysis in general has continued to increase over the past few decades, while the use of rare earth in methanol synthesis catalysts has not, despite often improving pertbrmance. The ability of several of the rare earth elements （Pr, Ce, Eu, Tb, Yb） to easily switch between oxidation states makes them beneficial for many different types of catalysts. However, for methanol synthesis the surface basicity is an important property, and the basic nature of the rare earth elements can be used to tune the basicity of catalysts. A small number of correlations between rare earth properties and catalytic performance have been observed, but often do not apply to other catalysts. Properties such as strength of basic sites, ionic radius, and etec- tronegativity have been found to correlate with performance results such as activity or selectivity.

Successfully locating a host plant is crucial for an insect herbivore to feed and/or ***,locating a host within a complex environment that may contain an array of different plant species is a difficult *** is particularly the case for polyphagous herbivores,which must locate a host within environments that may simultaneously contain multiple suitable and unsuitable *** we review the mechanisms of host selection used by polyphagous herbivores,as well as exploring how prior experience may modify a generalist's response to host *** show that recent research demonstrates that polyphagous herbivores have the capacity to detect both common cues from multiple host species,as well as specific cues from individual host *** creates a paradox in that generalists invariably rank hosts when given a choice,a finding at odds with the“neural limitations”hypothesis that says generalist insect herbivores should not have the neural capacity to identify cues specific to every possible *** explain this paradox we propose a model,akin to parasitoid host location,that postulates that generalist herbivores use different cues sequentially in host *** propose that initially common host cues,associated with all potential hosts,are used to place the herbivore within the host habitat and that,in the absence of any other host cues,these cues are sufficient in themselves to lead to host *** such they are true “generalist”***,once within the host habitat,we propose that the presence of a smaller group of cues may lead to further host searching and the location of preferred hosts:these are“specialist”*** model explains the current conflict in the literature where generalists can respond to both common and specific host-plant cues,while also exhibiting specialist and generalist host use behavior under different conditions.

Microglia, the main driver of neuroinflammation, play a central role in the initiation and exacerbation of various neurodegenerative diseases and are now considered a promising therapeutic target. Previous studies on in vitro human microglia and in vivo rodent models lacked scalability, consistency, or physiological relevance, which deterred successful therapeutic outcomes for the past decade. Here we review human blood monocyte-derived microglia-like cells as a robust and consistent approach to generate a patient-specific microglia-like model that can be used in extensive cohort studies for drug testing. We will highlight the strength and applicability of human blood monocyte-derived microglia-like cells to increase translational outcomes by reviewing the advantages of human blood monocyte-derived microglia-like cells in addressing patient heterogeneity and stratification, the basis of personalized medicine.

One of the leading issues in multiple sclerosis(MS)research is the lack of understanding regarding the triggers of *** demyelination is a major feature in MS,the degeneration of gray matter neurons contributes to major changes in patient function,but the mechanisms driving this neuronal loss are *** exciting research published by Luoqian et al.[1]in the December issue of Cellular and Molecular Immunology,new insights have shown an important contribution of ferroptosis to T-cell-mediated neurodegeneration in the common animal model of MS,‘experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis’(EAE).Although a relationship between ferroptosis and T-cell activation has been reported in other disorders,this is the first discovery of a link between abnormal iron homeostasis and T-cell infiltration in *** addition,the authors found that unlike other studies on ferroptosis-T-cell interactions[2,3],ferroptotic activation of T cells in EAE,and potentially MS,involved the infiltration and activation of CD4+T cells,rather than CD8+***,in this study,ferroptosis was a key driver of T-cell activation rather than the opposite interaction where CD8+cells drive ferroptosis[3].The research also mapped a key role for Acsl4 in the early stages of ferroptosis-T-cell-mediated ***4 converts free long-chain fatty acids into fatty acyl-CoA esters and has been identified as a central contributor to ferroptotic processes[4].This study has mapped a major new pathway potentially leading to neurodegeneration in MS,and this opens the possibility of new therapeutic approaches to treat MS based on iron targeting as the authors describe in their final experiments.

Associative learning is well documented in Hymenopteran parasitoids, where it is thought to be an adaptive mechanism for increasing successful host location in complex environments. Based on this learning capacity, it has been suggested that providing prerelease training to parasitoids reared for inundative release may lead to a subsequent increase in their efficacy as biological control agents. Using the fruit fly parasitoid Diachasmimorpha krausii we tested this hypothesis in a series of associative learning experiments which involved the parasitoid, two host fruits (tomatoes and nectarine), and one host fly (Bactrocera ttyoni). In sequential Y-tube olfactometer studies, large field-cage studies, and then open field studies, naive wasps showed a consistent preference for nectarines over tomatoes. The preference for nectarines was retained, but not significantly increased, for wasps which had prior training exposure to nectarines. However, and again consistently at all three spatial scales, prior experience on tomatoes led to significantly increased attraction to this fruit by tomato-trained wasps, including those liberated freely in the environment. These results, showing consistency of learning at multiple spatial scales, gives confidence to the many laboratory-based learning studies which are extrapolated to the field without testing. The experiment also provides direct experimental support for the proposed practice of enhancing the quality of inundatively released parasitoids through associative learning.

Utilizing supported single atoms as catalysts presents an opportunity to reduce the usage of critical raw materials such as platinum,which are essential for electrochemical reactions such as hydrogen oxidation reaction(HOr).Herein,we describe the synthesis of a Pt single electrocatalyst inside single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs)via a redox *** via electron microscopy,X-ray photoelectron microscopy,and X-ray absorption spectroscopy show the single-atom nature of the *** electrochemical behavior of the sample to hydrogen and oxygen was investigated using the advanced floating electrode technique,which minimizes mass transport limitations and gives a thorough insight into the activity of the *** single-atom samples showed higher HOr activity than state-of-the-art 30%Pt/C while almost no oxygen reduction reaction activity in the proton exchange membrane fuel cell operating *** selective activity toward HOr arose as the main fingerprint of the catalyst confinement in the SWCNTs.

Litter size and birth weights are limited by uterine capacity, defined as the ability of the uterus to maintain the appropriate development of some number of conceptuses. Uterine capacity is the result of the combined effects of uterine, placental and embryo/fetal function. The number of living conceptuses that the uterus is capable of supporting is greater during early gestation compared to later gestation. Plots of log fetal weight versus log placental weight also indicate that fetal weights are less sensitive to reduced placental weight （and therefore reduced intrauterine space） in early gestation compared to late gestation. However, even in late gestation, mechanisms still exist that maintain fetal growth when the size of the placenta is reduced. One such mechanism is likely to be improved development of the folded placental-epithelial/maternal-epithelial bilayer. Fold depth, and therefore the maternal fetal interactive surface, increases as gestation advances and is greater in placenta from smal fetuses. On the fetal side of the placenta, the epithelial bilayer is embedded in stromal tissue. Glycosaminoglycans are major components of stroma, including hyaluronan and heparan sulfate. Hyaluronidases and heparanases are present within placental tissues, and likely play roles in modification of stromal components to facilitate fold development. Glycosaminoglycans are polymers of forms of glucose （glucosamine, glucuronic acid, iduronic acid） suggesting that glycosaminoglycan synthesis may compete with the glucose needs of the developing fetus. Pig conceptuses are fructogenic, such that a substantial portion of glucose transferred from mother to fetus is converted to fructose. Fructose is an intermediate product in the synthesis of glucosamine from glucose, and glucosamine is linked to regulation of trophoblast cell proliferation through regulation of mTOr.
