Non-inclusion of certified herbal medicines in the National Health Insurance Scheme affects patient utilization of the integrated herbal medicine services in Ghana

Background:In 2011,Ghana piloted the integration of herbal medicine services into mainstream health care delivery in selected government hospitals across the *** date,however,no single certified herbal drug is generally covered by the national health insurance *** study evaluated the implications of out-of-pocket payment for prescriptions on the patronage of herbal medicine units in 3 selected government hospitals within Kumasi ***:A cross-sectional study on 413 participants was performed using a semi-structured ***:The majority of study respondents were female(54%),and the median age was 35 *** participants(83.1%)were aware that herbal medicine was integrated in the mainstream health care system of the *** the costs of certified herbal drugs,51.5%of respondents considered them very expensive;72.1%of the respondents believed that the costs of certified herbal drugs adversely affected the utilization of herbal units at government hospitals,which produced a positive correlation(r=0.5498).A total of 99.5%of the respondents recommended the inclusion of certified herbal drugs on the national health insurance drug ***:This study revealed that the costs of certified herbal medicines negatively affect utilization of herbal units at government *** improve the utilization of herbal units,certified herbal drugs dispensed at these units must thus be included in the national health insurance drug list.

Impact of community strategy package on uptake of reproductive tract infections health services among young street females in the municipality of Eldoret,Kenya

Background:Despite the intervention of free medical care services for street children by a dedicated clinic in Eldoret municipality,health care service of young street females(YSFs)is still *** present study aimed to evaluate the impact of the community strategy package on the uptake of reproductive tract infections(RTI)health services among the target *** and methods:A pre-test-post-test quasi-experimental with a qualitative and quantitative approach was applied among the YSFs aged 10-24 *** study used structured questionnaires and key informant interviews to collect data from the ***:The study enrolled a total of 77 young street females in Eldoret municipality.A significantly higher proportion of respondents reportedly first sought treatment for RTI at a health facility after the implementation of the community strategy package(97.1%)when compared to the proportion of respondents who first sought treatment at a health facility in the pre-intervention phase(51.0%)(pof treatment improved significantly after the introduction of the intervention;72.0%and 94.1%of the respondents sought treatment early during the pre-intervention and post-intervention phase,respectively(ponclusion:The study recommends the adoption of the community strategy as an intervention to increase the uptake of RTIs health services and promotion of the reproductive health of young street females.

Facile Synthetic Design and Characterization of Curcumin-Metformin Adduct： Potential Insights into the Role of This Conjugate in Diseases of Aging

Recently, the anti-glycation and anticancer properties of curcumin longa and okra seed extract were studied alone and also in combination with the well-established drug metformin. The combined effect of curcumin with metformin and metformin with okra seed extract was found to be highly efficacious in inhibiting Advanced Glycation End-products （AGEs）. In order to understand the mechanistic implications of curcumin combined with metformin and its enhanced anti-glycation activity, a Curcumin-Metformin Adduct was chemically synthesized. This adduct was fully characterized by thin-layer chromatography, Nano Drop spectrophotometry and electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry. The adduct may be helpful not only in elucidating the mechanism of anti-glycation and anti-cancer activities but also in studying the role of curcumin in binding of AI3-oligomers and disaggregating fibrillar formation in Alzheimer＇s disease.

This study investigated the presence of pharmaceuticals in the water and sediment of Buffalo and Sundays River Estuary,South *** for water and sediment samples was achieved with solidphase extraction and ultrasonic extraction methods,*** of the target analytes was done with *** pH of surface water in all the sampling sites(8.18-10.1)were above the WHo guideline(6.5).A good correlation was observed between the concentrations of analytes with organic matter and organic *** showed that carbamazepine exhibited the highest concentration(8.75±1.45 mg/kg)of all the pharmaceuticals,while trimethoprim has the highest detection frequency with the highest concentration of 1.62±0.83 mg/kg in the sediment *** was below the detection limit in both *** risk quotients revealed that carbamazepine and trimethoprim could be of potential risk,while caffeine may pose a very low risk to the aquatic organisms *** monitoring of the runoff entering Buffalo Estuary is required,being the point of discharge of Buffalo River to the Indian ***,the domestic waste discharge from residences in the surroundings of Sundays Estuary should be monitored.

Architectural heritage comprises one o the most important elements of mountain settlements in Greece. It holds high cultural value, represents the tangible continuation of the past and forms the unique character and identity of each mountain region. Yet, controversy regarding funding for its preservation often arises. In this paper, we used two Contingent Valuation surveys to estimate the socia benefit deriving from protecting the traditiona architecture in the mountainous village of Sirako and through it, to examine perceptions and attitudes o local residents and visitors. Research findings revealed a strong social will in favor of the good＇s protection followed by high percentages of positive willingness to pay（WTP）. However, WTP is significantly higher among residents. Cultura heritage value, of the good, appears to prevail, along with the environmental one. However, both residents and visitors pointed out that local heritage, if wellpreserved, will boost tourism development. Residents appeared to better recognize the true level o architectural decay, expressed higher apprehension for its protection and were willing to pay higher amount of money. Tourists, on the other side expressed high satisfaction for their visit, appreciated the beauty and serenity emerging from local built and natural environment and spent several days visiting the surrounding area. The longer they stayed and gotfamiliar with the village, the more willing they were to contribute to local heritage＇s protection. Percentages reflecting indifference for protecting architecture were extremely low. Yet, they were higher among tourists. Traditional architecture is considered as public good; an opinion resulting in an important percentage of visitors stating that national government should provide the necessary funding. Studies on Properties of Lipase Produced from Aspergillus sp. Isolated from Compost Soil

Lipase producing Aspergillus was isolated from soil collected from a refuse dump site located at Awka, Anambra State, Nigeria using standard microbiology and biochemical techniques. Crude extract of lipase was produced after a successful screening of the isolates using mineral broth containing p-NPP through submerged fermentation system with optimized physiologic conditions. Three steps of purification were carried out: Ammonium sulphate, dialysis and gel filtration (sephadex G-150). Crude extract was precipitated by using 70% saturation of ammonium sulphate at pH 6.0 which gave the optimum precipitation of the protein with specific activity of 260.56 U/mg. Precipitation using ammonium sulphate carried out at pH 6.5 and 8.0 gave specific activity of 217 U/mg of the protein. The precipitates were further desalted through dialysis for twelve hours and specific activity of 343.20 U/mg was recorded from the dialysate afterwards. Further purification was done by using sephadex G-150 and specific activity of 490.55 U/mg was recorded from the active pooled fractions. The purification table showed a 2.32 purification folds of lipase was gotten after gel filtration (sephadex G-150) with a lipase percentage yield of 2.00%. The specific activity of lipase increased from 211.81 to 490.55 U/mg. Characterization of β-galactosidase gave optima pH and temperature of the enzyme at 6.0 and 60°C respectively. Kinetic constants: Km and Vmax values were obtained at various concentrations of p-NPP where 0.32 mM and Vmax of 200.00 μmol/min respectively. Ca2+ and Co2+ showed greater effect on lipase activity in a concentration-dependent manner (0.03 - 0.05 M) when compared to Mn2+ and Fe2+. The results from this study have shown that lipase produced from filamentous Aspergillus has a wide range of activity over physiologic conditions in regards to industrial and clinical standard operational procedures.

Fabrication and multiscale characterization of 3D silver containing bioactive glass-ceramic scaffolds
