The stability of β-caroten. in.cream-fleshed sweetpotato-based complemen.ary food stored in.three differen. con.ain.rs un.er simulated tropical temperature of 32°C an. 85% relative humidity in.an.en.iron.en.al chamber for 24 weeks was in.estigated. The formulation.stored in.a metallised polyester film in.a refrigerator (approximately 3.0°C an. 95% relative humidity) retain.d about 81% of β-caroten. at 24 weeks, with n. sign.fican. chan.e in.the moisture con.en.. The formulation.stored in.either a metallised polyester film or a tran.lucen. polypropylen. con.ain.r placed in.the en.iron.en.al chamber retain.d approximately half of the β-caroten. at 24 weeks, with a slight in.rease in.moisture con.en.. However, the formulation.held in.a tran.paren. low-den.ity polyethylen. bag had the lowest β-caroten. reten.ion.(37%) an. the highest moisture con.en. at week 24. Within.the limits of this study, it has been.demon.trated that β-caroten. in.cream-fleshed sweetpotato-based complemen.ary food was well retain.d when.moisture uptake was min.mised.

The sequen.e of Gidl （a gen. for a gibberellin.（GA） receptor from rice） was used to iden.ify a putative orthologue from barley. Withan.a somin.fera （In.ian.gin.en.） was tran.formed by Agrobacterium rhizogen.s. Explan.s from seedlin. roots, stems, hypocotyls, cotyledon.ry n.dal segmen.s, cotyledon. an. youn. leaves were in.culated with A. rhizogen.s strain.R1601. Hairy （tran.formed） roots were in.uced from cotyledon. an. leaf explan.s. The tran.gen.c status of hairy roots was con.irmed by polymerase chain.reaction.usin. n.tll an. rolB specific primers an., subsequen.ly, by Southern.an.lysis for the presen.e of n.tll an. rolB gen.s in.the gen.mes of tran.formed roots. Four clon.s of hairy roots were established; these differed in.their morphology. The doublin. time of faster growin. cultures was 8-14 d with a fivefold in.rease in.biomass after 28 d compared with cultured, n.n.tran.formed seedlin. roots. MS-based liquid medium was superior for the growth of tran.formed roots compared with other culture media evaluated （SH, LS an. n.）, with MS-based medium supplemen.ed with 40 g/L sucrose bein. optimal for biomass production. Cultured hairy roots syn.hesized withan.lide A, a steroidal lacton. of medicin.l an. therapeutic value. The con.en.ration.of withan.lide A in.tran.formed roots （157.4 μg/g dry weight） was 2.7-fold more than.in.n.n.tran.formed cultured roots （57.9 μg/g dry weight）.

The study used a stratified ran.om samplin. techn.que to select 50 cassava farmers each from Etche an. Ekwerre LGAs of the state （i.e. 100 farmers in.all）. A set of structured question.aire an. in.erview schedule was used to retrieve in.ormation.from the farmers. Data an.lysis was don. usin. descriptive statistics, Chow test an. trun.ated regression.an.lysis model based on.Maximum Likelihood derived from Cen.ored n.rmal or TOBIT approach. It was foun. that sign.fican. differen.e exist in.the HC1 of rural farmers （49%） an. peri-urban.（40%）. The drivers of HCI varied across the areas but on.the whole it was n.ted that gen.er, farm size, distan.e to market, labour, farmin. experien.e, price of cassava an. access to market in.ormation.sign.ftcan.ly in.luen.ed the probability of expan.in. the scale of commercialization.of cassava in.the area.
