Steatotic livers are susceptible to normothermic ischemiareperfusion injury from mitochondrial Complex-Ⅰ?dysfunction

AIM: To assess the effects of ischemic preconditioning(IPC, 10-min ischemia/10-min reperfusion) on steatotic liver mitochondrial function after normothermic ischemia-reperfusion injury(IRI).METHODS: Sixty male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed8-wk with either control chow or high-fat/high-sucrose diet inducing > 60% mixed steatosis. Three groups(n = 10/group) for each dietary state were tested:(1) the IRI group underwent 60 min partial hepatic ischemia and 4 h reperfusion;(2) the IPC group underwent IPC prior to same standard IRI; and(3) sham underwent t h e s a m e s u r g e r y w i t h o u t I R I o r I P C. H e p a t i c mitochondrial function was analyzed by oxygraphs. Mitochondrial Complex-Ⅰ, Complex-Ⅱ enzyme activity, serum alanine aminotransferase(ALT), and histological injury were ***: Steatotic-IRI livers had a greater increase in ALT(2476 ± 166 vs 1457 ± 103 IU/L, P gical injury following IRI compared to the lean liver group. Steatotic-IRI demonstrated lower Complex-Ⅰ?activity at baseline [78.4 ± 2.5 vs 116.4 ± 6.0 nmol/(*** protein), P g IRI [28.0 ± 6.2 vs 104.3 ± 12.6 nmol/(*** protein), P group. Complex-Ⅱ activity was unaffected by hepatic steatosis or IRI. Lean liver mitochondrial function was unchanged following IRI. IPC normalized ALT and histological injury in steatotic livers but had no effect on overall steatotic liver mitochondrial function or individual mitochondrial complex enzyme activities. CONCLUSION: Warm IRI impairs steatotic liver Complex-Ⅰ?activity and function. The protective effects of IPC in steatotic livers may not be mediated through mitochondria.

Biloma: An unusual complication in a patient with pancreatic cancer

The term biloma describes an encapsulated collection of bile within the abdomen, usually secondary to bile duct disruption. The commonest causes reported in the literature are iatrogenic （secondary to hepatobUiary surgery）, trauma or complications due to choledocho- lithiasis. A few cases have been reported as complica- tions of cholangiocarcinoma or acute cholecystitis. We report the case of a 64-year-old man initially diagnosed with a non-obstructive malignancy of the pancreas, who developed a spontaneous intrahepatic biloma 8 mo later. This was identified following a 1-wk history of fever, rigors and icterus. The biloma was identified on computed tomography and subsequently drained under ultrasound guidance. Forty-eight hours later, a stent was inserted endoscopically into his common bile duct and he made an uneventful in-hospital recovery. We believe this is the first documented case of spontaneous intrahepatic biloma to occur secondary to pancreatic malignancy.

AIM:To investigate the role of exercise training the past 25 years on major physiological-psychological outcomes studied thus far in this patient ***:Pub Med, Medline Plus, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, SportD iscus, Embase, Scorpus, and google Scholar were searched from September to November 2013 to identify exercise training studies that used objective measurements of fitness and/or patient reported outcomes assessed pre and post-exercise training with statistical analyses performed in at least one of the following outcome measurements:Cardiorespiratory function, body composition, muscular strength, fatigue, depression, and overall quality of life. Five reviewers independently identified the studies that met the criteria for the review and discrepancies were resolved by consensus among all ***:Fifty-one studies were included in this review with 5 from the period between 1989-1999, 11 from 2000-2006, and 35 from 2007-2013. The evolution of study designs changed from aerobic only exercise training interventions(1989-1999), to a combination of aerobic and resistance training(2000-2006), to studies including an arm of resistance training or examining the effects of resistance training as the main mode of exercise(2007-2013). Overall, the benefits of exercise showed improvements in cardiorespiratory function, body composition, strength, and patient reported outcomes including fatigue, depression, and quality of ***:Exercise training appears to be safe for most breast cancer patients and improvements in physiological, psychological, and functional parameters can be attained with regular participation in moderate intensity exercise.

The identification of jets originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed at the Large Hadron Collider,as Standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced *** paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAS Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAS *** taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet *** in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 geV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.
