Twenty-five years of research on the effects of exercise training in breast cancer survivors:A systematic review of the literature

AIM:To investigate the role of exercise training the past 25 years on major physiological-psychological outcomes studied thus far in this patient ***:Pub Med, Medline Plus, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, SportD iscus, Embase, Scorpus, and Google Scholar were searched from September to November 2013 to identify exercise training studies that used objective measurements of fitness and/or patient reported outcomes assessed pre and post-exercise training with statistical analyses performed in at least one of the following outcome measurements:Cardiorespiratory function, body composition, muscular strength, fatigue, depression, and overall quality of life. Five reviewers independently identified the studies that met the criteria for the review and discrepancies were resolved by consensus among all ***:Fifty-one studies were included in this review with 5 from the period between 1989-1999, 11 from 2000-2006, and 35 from 2007-2013. The evolution of study designs changed from aerobic only exercise training interventions(1989-1999), to a combination of aerobic and resistance training(2000-2006), to studies including an arm of resistance training or examining the effects of resistance training as the main mode of exercise(2007-2013). Overall, the benefits of exercise showed improvements in cardiorespiratory function, body composition, strength, and patient reported outcomes including fatigue, depression, and quality of ***:Exercise training appears to be safe for most breast cancer patients and improvements in physiological, psychological, and functional parameters can be attained with regular participation in moderate intensity exercise.

Purpose:The aim of this study was to review,systematically,evidence concerning the link between the ACTN3 R577X polymorphism and the rates and severity of non-contact injuries and exercise-induced muscle damage in athletes and individuals enrolled in exercise training ***:A computerized literature search was performed in the electronic databases PubMed,Web of Science,and SPORTDiscus,from inception until November *** included studies compared the epidemiological characteristics of non-contact injury between the different genotypes of the ACTN3 R577X ***:Our search identified 492 *** the screening of titles,abstracts,and full texts,13 studies examining the association between the ACTN3 genotypes and the rate and severity of non-contact injury were included in the *** studies were performed in 6 different countries(Spain,Japan,Brazil,China,the Republic of Korea,and Italy)and involved a total participant pool of 1093 *** the studies,2 studies involved only women,5 studies involved only men,and 6 studies involved both men and *** the studies included were classified as highquality studies(≥6 points in the Physiotherapy Evidence Database(PEDro)scale score).Overall,evidence suggests there is an association between the ACTN3 R577X genotype and non-contact injury in 12 *** studies observed a significant association between A CTN3 R577X polymorphism and exercise induced muscle damage:2 with non-contact ankle injury,3 with non-contact muscle injury,and 1 with overall non-contact ***:The present findings support the premise that possessing the ACTN3 XX genotype may predispose athletes to a higher probability of some non-contact injuries,such as muscle injury,ankle sprains,and higher levels of exercise-induced muscle damage.

Revision total hip arthroplasty: An analysis of the quality and readability of information on the internet

The demand for revision total hip arthroplasty(THA)is *** quality on the internet has been extensively analysed in relation to primary THA but no such analysis has ever been performed for revision *** aim was to assess the quality and readability of this *** major internet search engines were searched for information on revision *** websites were assessed for quality of information using the DISCERN score,the Journal of the American Medical Association benchmark criteria and a novel scoring system specific to revision THA[Vancouver Revision Arthroplasty Information(VRAI)score].Website readability was assessed,as was presence of the Health On the Net Foundation(HON)*** majority of websites(52%)were academic with a post-graduate reading *** 6.5%of websites had the HON *** percent of websites had a‘good’DISCERN score and only 28%had a‘good’score with the novel VRAI scoring *** information websites had significantly higher rates of‘good’VRAI scores(P=0.008).Websites with the HON seal had significantly higher DISCERN scores(P=0.01).All governmental websites were at a reading level suitable for patient *** on the internet relating to revision THA is of low quality,much lower than the quality of information on primary *** recommend governmental websites for their readability and health information websites for their quality of information specific to revision *** with the HON seal provide higher quality information and should be recommended to patients as reading material regarding revision THA.

The concept of an integrated "lab on a chip" has long been a goal for the micro-electro-mechanical-systems(MEMS) *** would entail the integration of not only the sampling and analysis of various functions,but also the ability to transmit this information off the chip to a central *** paper describes the initial steps in the fabrication of a "lab on a chip" which would continually analyze blood sampled via microneedles using techniques such as nano plasmonics,specifically,concentrations of *** analysis could then be transmitted off the chip using digital signal *** paper describes the analysis and optimization of the microneedle shape and size and the fabrication of the resulting needles in silicon using deep reactive ion etching(DRIE).The paper also describes the opportunities for fabrication of such needles in alternative materials and describes the issues that still have to be overcome before such an integrated device is realized.

生物工程可恰当地形客成多学科的综合体,包括化学、生物化学、生物学和工程学,用于解决特定的问题。食品、化工、制药行业的许多产品是通过生物学过程生产的。在所有生物工程过程中,原料通过一定反应物中的各种生物学变化产生预期的产品。单细胞蛋白(SCP)的生产大多受到生物工程过程的控制。改进SCP的产量、生产率、质量可通过使该过程的各个阶段尽可能完善来达到。研究范围在少数研究中报道了利用遗传工程改进SCP生产[表1]。为数不多的研究中反映出复杂的遗传工程工艺处理SCP微生物的不足之处,很少有人注意到原料的利用率,尽管有些人注意到应增加SCP微生物的培养基的选择范围。其它有关SCP微生物改良的方法涉及产品回收和SCP发酵后的过程。细胞蛋白质的分离,促使从SCP发酵物中回收蛋白质(Udaka *** 1981)。其它有关改进细胞裂解和SCP性能也有研究(Boudrant *** 1979,Jamas 1983)。

The Unrecognized Value of Bio-Medical Engineers in Healthcare Projects in Developing Countries

The healthcare needs of developing countries are great and ever increasing as their populations grow. Few assistance programs have recognized the value of the bio-medical engineer as part of the approach to the provision of healthcare in developing countries. An example of a program, the Bach Mai Hospital Project, in Vietnam, utilizing the talents of the bio-medical engineer, attests to the potential value of bio-medical engineers as part of the healthcare team. Their inclusion in such efforts can result in the saving of lives, time and money. Knowledge of their hospital's excess equipment inventory and their ability to restore medical equipment badly needed in a developing country makes them valuable additions to any medical assistance program.
