Ontogenetic shift in response to prey-derived chemical cues in prairie rattlesnakes crotalus viridis viridis

Snakes often have specialized diets that undergo a shift from one prey type to another depending on the life stage of the snake. crotalus viridis viridis （prairie rattlesnake） takes different prey at different life stages, and neonates typically prey on ectotherms, while adults feed almost entirely on small endotherms. We hypothesized that elevated rates of tongue flicking to chemical stimuli should correlate with particular prey consumed, and that this response shifts from one prey type to another as in- dividuals age. To examine if an ontogenetic shift in response to chemical cues occurred, we recorded the rate of tongue flicking for 25 neonate, 20 subadult, and 20 adult （average SVL = 280.9, 552, 789.5 mm, respectively） wild-caught c. v. viridis to chemi- cal stimuli presented on a cotton-tipped applicator; water-soluble cues from two ectotherms （prairie lizard, Sceloporus undulatus, and house gecko, Hemidactylusfrenatus）, two endotherms （deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus and lab mouse, Mus musculus）, and water controls were used. Neonates tongue flicked significantly more to chemical cues of their common prey, S. undulatus, than to all other chemical cues; however, the response to this lizard＇s chemical cues decreased in adult rattlesnakes. Subadults tongue flicked with a higher rate of tongue flicking to both S. undulatus and P. maniculatus than to all other treatments, and adults tongue flicked significantly more to P. maniculatus than to all other chemical cues. In addition, all three sub-classes demonstrated a greater response for natural prey chemical cues over chemical stimuli of prey not encountered in the wild （M. musculus and H. frenatus）. This shift in chemosensory response correlated with the previously described ontogenetic shifts in c. v. viridis diet. Be-cause many vipers show a similar ontogenetic shift in diet and venom composition, we suggest that this shift in prey cue dis- crimination is likely a general phenomenon among viperid snakes.

Evaluation of acute and subacute toxicity of whole-plant aqueous extract of Vernonia mespilifolia Less. in Wistar rats

Objective： This study investigated the acute and subacute toxicity of whole-plant aqueous extract of Vernonia mespilifolia Less. （AEVM） in rats for evaluating its safety profile. Methods： AEVM for the acute （2000 and 5000 mg/kg） and subacute （200, 400 and 600 mg/kg） toxicity studies was administered orally to rats according the guidelines 425 and 407 of Organization for Economic cooperation and Development, respectively. Food and water intake as well as body and organ weight of animals were recorded. Signs of toxicity were assessed, and hematological, biochemical and histopathological analyses were performed. Results： In the acute toxicity study, a single dose of the aqueous extract at 2000 or 5000 mg/kg caused no mortality in the animals, suggesting that the median lethal dose is greater than 5000 mg/kg. In the subacute toxicity study, administration of the extract for 28 d, at all doses, caused no significant changes in the body weights or organ weights of rats in the treated groups when compared with the control group. In addition, hematological and biochemical parameters also revealed no toxic effects of the extract on rats. Histological sections of the heart, liver and kidney from test animals showed no signs of degen- eration. conclusion： These results showed that AEVM at dosage levels up to 600 mg/kg is nontoxic and could also offer protection on some body tissues. AEVM could, therefore, be considered safe.

Occurrence of False-Positive Tests and cross-reactions Between cOVID-19 and Dengue With Implications During Diagnosis:A Mixed Evidence Synthesis

This review aimed to assess the occurrence of false-positive serological reaction between dengue and coronavirus disease 2019(cOVID-19)and its implications for *** syntheses were conducted by systematically reviewing available literature using multiple databases,including Web of Science,PubMed,Google Scholar and *** a total of 16 presented cases from clinical settings,cross-reaction to cOVID-19 serological tests was observed in two(12.5%)dengue-positive patients,while 14 patients(87.5%)confirmed positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-coV-2)showed a cross-reaction with dengue serological tests,leading to misdiagnosis and mismanagement by attending *** 1789 SARS-coV-2-positive sera,cross-reaction to dengue serological tests was observed in 180 sera(10%),which is higher than the cross-reaction observed for SARS-coV-2 in archived pre-cOVID-19 sera positive for a dengue infection(75 of 811,9.2%,P=0.674).clinicians in tropical regions are therefore advised to interpret serological tests with caution and use a more pragmatic approach to triage these infections.

Risk predictors of post-hepatectomy liver failure: unraveling complexities and navigating challenges in clinical application

Studies related to the prediction of post-hepatectomy liver failure(PHLF)have seen a surge in recent literature.A PubMed search using the terms((“pred*”OR“nomogra*”OR“model*”)AND(“mortality”OR“liver failure”OR“PHLF”)AND(“hepatect*”OR“liver resect*”))revealed 29 relevant studies on PHLF prediction between January 2020 and November 2023,with 20 adhering to grade B/c International Study Group of Liver Surgery(ISGLS)definitions(Table 1).These studies are primarily enrolling patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(Hcc).This underscores the growing interest in applying such predictive scores in routine clinical ***,the extent to which these predictive models can be effectively implemented in clinical settings remains unclear(21,22).Indeed,all studies are retrospective,and only a limited number underwent external *** is crucial to recognize that these scores predominantly emerge within surgical cohorts,where patients underwent prior meticulous selection,leading to tailored surgical strategies and the exclusion of specific candidates(21).

Fabrication and multiscale characterization of 3D silver containing bioactive glass-ceramic scaffolds

Steatotic livers are susceptible to normothermic ischemiareperfusion injury from mitochondrial complex-Ⅰ?dysfunction

AIM: To assess the effects of ischemic preconditioning(IPc, 10-min ischemia/10-min reperfusion) on steatotic liver mitochondrial function after normothermic ischemia-reperfusion injury(IRI).METHODS: Sixty male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed8-wk with either control chow or high-fat/high-sucrose diet inducing > 60% mixed steatosis. Three groups(n = 10/group) for each dietary state were tested:(1) the IRI group underwent 60 min partial hepatic ischemia and 4 h reperfusion;(2) the IPc group underwent IPc prior to same standard IRI; and(3) sham underwent t h e s a m e s u r g e r y w i t h o u t I R I o r I P c. H e p a t i c mitochondrial function was analyzed by oxygraphs. Mitochondrial complex-Ⅰ, complex-Ⅱ enzyme activity, serum alanine aminotransferase(ALT), and histological injury were ***: Steatotic-IRI livers had a greater increase in ALT(2476 ± 166 vs 1457 ± 103 IU/L, P cal injury following IRI compared to the lean liver group. Steatotic-IRI demonstrated lower complex-Ⅰ?activity at baseline [78.4 ± 2.5 vs 116.4 ± 6.0 nmol/(*** protein), P c-IRI also demonstrated impaired complex-Ⅰ?function post-IRI compared to the lean liver IRI group. complex-Ⅱ activity was unaffected by hepatic steatosis or IRI. Lean liver mitochondrial function was unchanged following IRI. IPc normalized ALT and histological injury in steatotic livers but had no effect on overall steatotic liver mitochondrial function or individual mitochondrial complex enzyme activities. cONcLUSION: Warm IRI impairs steatotic liver complex-Ⅰ?activity and function. The protective effects of IPc in steatotic livers may not be mediated through mitochondria.

Antioxidant, antibacterial and phytochemical properties of two medicinal plants against the wound infecting bacteria

Objective: To investigate the antioxidant, antibacterial and phytochemical properties of ethanol extracts of Brachylaena elliptica and Brachylaena ilicifolia against wound infecting bacteria normally found in diabetic ***: The in vitro antioxidant activity of the two plants extracts were investigated spectrophotometrically using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl, nitric oxide, azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt, hydrogen peroxide(H_2O_2) and ferric reducing power. The antibacterial assay and minimum inhibitory concentration(MIc) was determined using the agar dilution method against five bacteria strains using amoxycillin and ciprofloxacin as positive control. The phytochemical analyses(tannins,total phenol, flavonoids, flavonols, proanthocyanidin, alkaloids and saponins) were assessed using standard ***: The ethanol extract of both plants exhibited strong antioxidant activities in some cases when compared to the standards(vitamin c and BHT). The antibacterial activity of both plants showed an appreciable broad spectrum activity against these wound pathogens with MIc value ranges between 0.3 mg/m L and 5 mg/m L. Tannins,phenols, flavanols, proanthocyanidins and alkaloids content of B. ilicifolia were significantly higher than those in B. elliptica. However, there were no significant differences in the flavanoid content of both plants ***: These results indicated that the ethanol leaf extracts of these plants have antioxidant and antibacterial activity against the tested bacteria possibly due to the presence of bioactive compounds and therefore could be used as alternative therapy against wound infection caused by these bacteria in diabetic patients.
