Lipid concentration and composition in xylem sap of woody angiosperms from a tropical savanna and a seasonal rainforest

Lipids may play an important role in preventing gas embolisms by coating nanobubbles in xylem *** studies on xylem sap lipids have been reported for temperate plants,and it remain unclear whether sap lipids have adaptational significance in tropical *** this study,we quantify the lipid composition of xylem sap for angiosperm species from a tropical savanna(seven species)and a seasonal rainforest(five species)using mass *** found that all twelve species studied contained lipids in their xylem sap,including galactolipids,phospholipids and triacylglycerol,with a total lipid concentration ranging from 0.09 to 0.26 nmol/*** was no difference in lipid concentration or composition between plants from the two sites,and the lipid concentration was negatively related to species’open vessel ***,savanna species showed little variation in lipid composition between the dry and the rainy *** results support the hypothesis that xylem sap lipids are derived from the cytoplasm of individual conduit cells,remain trapped inside individual conduits,and undergo few changes in composition over consecutive seasons.A xylem sap lipidomic data set,which includes 12 tropical tree species from this study and 11 temperate tree species from literature,revealed no phylogenetic signals in lipid composition for these *** study fills a knowledge gap in the lipid content of xylem sap in tropical trees and provides additional support for their common distribution in xylem sap of woody *** appears that xylem sap lipids have no adaptive significance.

A triangular architectural relation model among sustainability,beauty,and power

Sustainability,beauty,and power are notions that hit our contemporary perception every ***,they have been an integral part of architecture and urban planning in various forms since the *** paper presents their fundamental descriptions,followed by an assessment of their mutual relations and impact on architecture through a triangular architectural relation model developed by the authors of the *** the theoretical thought experiment,it highlights eight boundary models along with their main characteristics,in particular,the implosion,explosion,shared-control,utilitarian,no-control,supremacy,inside-forced,and outside-forced architectural related *** models can help predict future events,explain past events,make decisions,and plan strategies,or reveal problems and propose new *** applications include determination of the causes of certain results or finding out the responsibility and mechanisms that led to *** authors are of the opinion that the mutual denominator of sustainability,beauty,and power represents ethics that should be forced in architectural education and practice.

Spatio-Temporal Variability of Rainfall and Temperature and Their Effects on Pasture Variability over East Africa: Implication on the Cattle Grazing Areas

Understanding the spatiotemporal variability of climatic parameters and their effects on pasture variability is vital for pasture management interventions over East Africa. The present study aims to assess the spatial-temporal variability of rainfall, temperature and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) (which is being used to assess pasture quality and productivity) over the region, between the period of 1982 and 2019. This study used annual mean values for rainfall, temperature and NDVI which were calculated for the period mentioned above. NDVI was derived from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Global Area Cover (GAC) (NOAA-07-GAC) data. The rainfall data was acquired from the Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation with Station (CHIRPS) while temperature is ERA5 reanalysis data sourced from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The study utilized the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) to identify patterns and dominant relationships between the climate variables. The correlation was calculated between rainfall, temperature and NDVI to assess the relationship among them. A non-parametric Mann-Kendall trends test was used to determine whether annual precipitation, temperature and NDVI had statistically increasing or decreasing trend. Results revealed a positive correlation between rainfall and NDVI while a negative correlation between NDVI and temperature. Positive correlation between rainfall and NDVI indicates that pasture health (quality and productivity), will improve accordingly. A negative correlation between temperature and NDVI indicates that pasture health will decrease with increase in temperature while improving with decreasing temperature. Outcome from this study suggests that changes in climatic variables influence the distribution of pasture in East Africa’s cattle grazing areas. Bamboo plants are an essential component of tropical ecosystems,yet their vulnerability to climate extremes,such as drought,is poorly understood due to limited knowledge of their hydraulic *** pergracile,a commonly used tropical bamboo species,exhibited a substantially higher mortality rate than other co-occurring bamboos during a severe drought event in 2019,but the underlying mechanisms remain *** study investigated the leaf and stem hydraulic traits related to drought responses,including leaf-stem embolism resistance(P50leaf;P50stem) estimated using optical and X-ray microtomography methods,leaf pressure-volume and water-releasing ***,we investigated the seasonal water potentials,native embolism level(PLC) and xylem water source using stable *** found that *** exhibited strong resistance to embolism,showing low P50leaf,P50stem,and turgor loss point,despite its rapid leaf water ***,its leaves displayed greater resistance to embolism than its stem,suggesting a lack of effective hydraulic vulnerability segmentation(HVS) to protect the stem from excessive xylem *** the dry season,approximately 49% of the water was absorbed from the upper 20-cm-deep soil ***,significant diurnal variation in leaf water potentials and an increase in midday PLC from 5.87±2.33% in the wet season to 12.87±4.09%in the dry season were *** summary,this study demonstrated that the rapid leaf water loss,high reliance on surface water,and a lack of effective HVS in *** accelerated water depletion and increased xylem embolism even in the typical dry season,which may explain its high mortality rate during extreme drought events in 2019.

Introduction: Otorhinolaryngological (ORL) and cervicofacial traumas encompass injuries affecting the neck, face, and ORL region, resulting from external influence. The objective of this study was to conduct an epidemiological and clinical analysis of ORL and cervicofacial injuries observed in victims of road accidents treated at the Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) department of the Regional Hospital of Mamou. Materials and Methods: This prospective and descriptive study was conducted over a period of 12 months, from January 1st to December 31st, 2021, within the Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) department of the Regional Hospital of Mamou. It included patients hospitalized for ORL and/or cervicofacial traumas resulting from road accidents during the study period. Results: A total of 348 cases were included, representing 36.22% of all traumas related to road accidents (AVP) within the Regional Hospital of Mamou. The average age of the patients was 26.44 years, with a sex ratio of 3.83, favoring males. The dominant socio-professional category was students, encompassing 32.47% of cases. Road accidents were mainly associated with motorcycle use (31.32% motorcycle-to-motorcycle, 24.43% motorcycle skidding, 13.51% motorcycle-pedestrian). Facial region injuries were the most common, accounting for 69.03% of cases, followed by rhinological injuries (17.28%) and otological injuries (13.69%). Associated injuries were predominantly closed head traumas (52.55%) and lower limb fractures (20.41%). Imaging was underutilized. Regarding surgical interventions, reconstructive surgery was the most predominant, accounting for 52.51% of cases, with a management timeframe of 30 minutes to 12 hours for 99.72% of patients. Conclusion: Road traffic accidents remain a serious public health issue, primarily affecting young males. Emphasis should be placed on road safety measures to reduce the frequency of these accidents.

Subxyphoid Pericardial Drainage for Tuberculous Pericardial Effusion in Antananarivo

Introduction: Tuberculosis is the leading cause of pericardial effusion in sub-Saharan African countries. The aim of this study was to describe the diagnosis and the surgical management of tuberculous pericardial effusion in low-income country. Methods: This was a retrospective and descriptive study performed at Vascular Surgery Unit for 10 years-period (from January 2012 to December 2021), including all cases of drainage of pericardial effusion due to tuberculosis. Results: Sixty-seven cases were recorded, including 38 males (56.71%) and 29 women (43.28%). The average age was 35.47 years old. Patients lived in urban areas in 67.16% of cases. Thirteen patients (13.43%) had a previous history of pulmonary tuberculosis. The most common risk factors for tuberculosis infection were malnourishment (80.59%), indoor air pollution (77.61%) and close contact with tuberculosis patient (40.29%). The commonest symptom were dyspnea, (95.52%), chest pain (89.55%), fever (67.16%), tachycardia (95.52%) and cough (80.59%). Twenty-seven patients (39.02%) presented clinical signs of cardiac tamponade. Electrocardiogram showed sinus tachycardia (97.53%) with microvoltage (39.02%). Chest-X-ray showed cardiomegaly (100%) and pleural effusion (56.71%). Echocardiography showed moderate (43.28%) and large (56.71%) pericardial effusion. All patients underwent subxiphoid pericardial drainage. Mycobacterium tuberculosis detection via GeneXpert test of pericardial effusion were positive in 38.80% of patients. Pericardial biopsies confirmed the diagnosis of tuberculosis in 41.79%. The mortality rate was 8.95%. Conclusion: Subxiphoid pericardial drainage reduced thr risk of cardiac tamponade in patients with massive pericardial effusion. Histopathology of pericardial biopsies made a definitive diagnosis for tuberculosis.

Introduction: External otitis (OE) is an acute or chronic inflammation or infection of the external ear resulting from an imbalance in the external auditory canal secondary to microtrauma, maceration, eczema, or a foreign body in the external auditory canal. Objective: To study cases of external otitis at the Mamou Regional Hospital. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective descriptive study conducted over a period of six (6) months from July 1st to December 31st, 2016. It included all patients admitted to the ENT department of the Mamou Regional Hospital. Results: During the study period, 712 patients were admitted to the department for various pathologies, of which 103 met our selection criteria, representing a frequency of 14.46%. The mean age of the patients was 33.74 years with a range of 1 to 90 years. Males predominated in the sample, accounting for 59.22%. The vast majority of patients resided in urban areas, constituting 61.17% of the sample. In our study, all patients consulted for otalgia (100%), and over half (53.39%) for hypoacusis. We formally identified rhinitis in 66.66% of cases, while diabetes was found in only 4 patients (11.11%). Otomycosis was the most commonly identified condition (53.39%), followed by furuncles (33.98%). Ear drops containing antibiotics were administered to all patients, although 66.60% received antibiotic therapy. Conclusion: External otitis is a relatively common condition, particularly among children and the elderly. Diagnosis can be made based on pain upon traction of the pinna and pressure on the tragus.

Deer farming is a thriving industry for venison,velvet antlers,trophy hunting,and other *** and nutrition are important factors for improving production performance,especially dietary protein and amino acids(AAs),as they are the main components of all *** a few studies on AA supplementation(Lys,Met,Arg)have been performed on cervids,which show positive effects on weight gain,ADG,feed-:gain ratio,plasma AAs,carcass weight,dressing percentage,yield of high-quality muscles,storage of internal fat during winter,DM and CP digestibility,plasma protein-and fat-related metabolite concentrations,antler burr perimeter,weight,length and mineralisation,velvet antler yield,rumen volatile fatty acids,and microbiome *** these effects are relevant for supporting the production of cervids products,from venison to velvet or trophy antlers,as well as their general performance and well-being of captive-bred *** current available information suggests that AA supplementation can be especially interesting for animals fed low protein rations,and growing animals,but should be avoided in high rations and during winter,since it may promote the accumulation of internal *** effects on milk production and the concentrations of different hormones involved in the regulation of the antler cycle should be further explored.
