Surgical Treatment of Cervical Spine Trauma in Rural Area (Low Income Country): Our Experience and Results

Introduction: cervical spine trauma remains one of the most common causes of morbidity in the world with a significant financial burden on our society. It is a devastating event for the patient and family. The aim of this study is to share our experience in the surgery management of cervical spine injury in rural area. Methods: We did retrospective and single center study for one year from August 2020 to August 2021. We included all the patients who had undergone surgery for cervical spine injury in our hospital. Results: The study is based on 14 patients, 9 males and 5 females (sex ratio: 1.8). The average age was 34 years old and 08 (57%) were employed at time of injury. Road traffic accident was the most common cause, it was found in 11 (78%) cases followed by falls in 2 (14%) and interpersonal assault in 1 (7%). The Time admission ranged from 03 hours to 03 weeks. The most associated lesion was head trauma 7 (50%) followed by chest injury in 05 (35%) and 92% of our patient had motor deficit. Surgery was performed in all cases. Closed reduction was performed in 09 (64%) before surgery. Different types of complications that we had encountered were: infection 01 (07%) case, bed sores 02 (14%) cases, respiratory distress 02 (14%) cases and cervical kyphosis 01 (07%) case. After 06 months 71% of patients have progressed well with partial or complete recovery of their deficit. 14% of death in our series were noted and 28% of patients returned to work. Conclusion: cervical spine trauma remains a heavy socio-professional handicap. In rural areas, despite the lack of equipment and the difficulties of care, our results are satisfactory. However, it is necessary to insist on psychotherapy for these patients.

Optimal Sizing of Capacitor Bank for Increasing Substation Capacity of Mamou

In order to increase the available power of the electrical energy distribution station and improve the voltage profile of the distribution lines, the use of shunt capacitor banks is indicated. The main results obtained during this study are: a reduction in subscribed power from 14913.978 kVA to 14010.100 kVA, a reduction in the transformer load rate from 99.4% to 93.4%, a reduction in reactive power called from 5481.729 kVAr to 481.729 kVAr, an increase in the active power transported by the substation from 8505.062 kW to 8962.323 kW, a reduction in the voltage drop from 4.8% to 3.9%, an increase in the power available at the secondary of the transformer station at full load from 13950 kW to 14700 kW and an annual electrical energy saving of 339943.48 kWh of electrical energy, therefore fuel savings and a reduction in CO2 and SO2 emissions due to this energy saving will be achieved. The installation of capacitor banks for optimization of reactive energy allowed a reduction in the current called therefore a reduction in the absorbed power: 14153.061 kVA, i.e. a reduction of 903.876 kVA. It is therefore essential that energy players are convinced of the need to install capacitors to reduce or even eliminate their reactive energy bill. This is necessarily accompanied by an investment by Electricité De Guinée by setting up active and reactive energy meters but also by implementing pricing in line with the reduction in the transfer of reactive energy in the network.

Study of the Electrical Parameters of a Silicon Solar Cell (n+/p/p+) under the Effect of Temperature by Optimization of the Base Thickness and the Doping Rate

In this work, we propose an approach to model the basic parameters of a silicon solar cell (n+/p/p+) by optimizing the doping rate and the thickness of the base using Matlab Simulink. This technique applies to electrical parameters such as the short-circuit current (Jcc) and the open-circuit voltage (Vco). These parameters are mainly related to the variations in the doping rate and the thickness of the solar cell. So, optimizing these parameters could offer the possibility of better taking into account the influence of temperature and improving the quality of the solar cell. This technique consists of determining the optimum thickness and the optimum doping rate. And this allowed us to observe using graphs the behavior of the solar cell under different values of temperature.

A Biogas Production Model from the Combination of Pig Manure and Cow Dung in N’Zérékoré City, Republic of Guine

This present research work focuses on the valorization of pig droppings for production of biogas in mono digestion and co-digestion with proportions of cow dung from the urban commune of N’Zérékoré. It was carried out in December 2020 in the Physics laboratory of the University of N’Zérékoré. The anaerobic digestion process took 25 days in an almost constant ambient temperature of 25˚C. Five digesters were loaded on 12/06/2020, two of which with 1 kg of pig dung and 1 kg of cow dung both in mono-digestion. The 3 other digesters in co-digestion with different proportions of pig manure and cow dung. The substrate in each digester is diluted in 2 liters of water, with a proportion of (1/2). The main results obtained are: 1) the evolution of the temperature and pH during digestion process, 2) the average biogas productions 0.61 liters for (D1);1.20 liter for (D2);1.65 liter for (D3);1.51 liter for (D4) and 1.31 liter for (D5). The cumulative amounts of biogas are respectively: D1 (7.95 liters), D2 (15.60 liters), D3 (21.50 liters), D4 (19.65 liters) and D5 (17.05 liters). The total cumulative production is 81.75 liters at the end of the process. The originality of this research work is that the proposed model examines the relation between the daily biogas production and the variation of temperature, pH and pressure. The combustibility test showed the biogas produced during the first week was no combustible (contains less than 50% methane). Combustion started from the biogas produced from the 15th day and it is from the 20th day that a significant amount of stable yellow/blue flame was observed. The results of this study show the combination of pig manure and cow dung presents advantages for optimal biogas production.

Design and Construction of an Experimental Biodigester in the Senkerfa Poultry Farm in Kankan,Guinea

This study is a continuation of our research work on the energy recovery of OM(Organic Matter)and the protection of the *** took place from October 1 to November 25,2021 in the poultry farm of *** Daye KABA in the Senkefra district,urban commune of *** this work,we designed,built and tested a 6 m^(3)*** dung(2,500 kg)with 2,300 L of water served as a substrate for the production of biogas during 30 days of *** following physico-chemical parameters:Temperature(T°C),Humidity(H%),Hydrogen potential(pH),Dry Matter(DM),Organic Matter(OM)and the ratio between Carbon(C)and Nitrogen(N)(C/N)of cow dung were determined,namely:T(28°);H(75%);pH(6.5);MS(15%);MO(55%)and C/N(25%).During the 30 days of digestion,the temperature varied from 27 to 35°C with an average of 30.57°C(mesophilic digestion);the pH varied from 6 to 9,with an average of 7.58;the daily production kinetics represented the four stages of digestion(hydrolysis,acidogenesis,acetogenesis and methanogenesis).The cumulative production of biogas is 198 m^(3).The composition of the biogas produced is 60%CH_(4),36%CO_(2),2%N_(2),2%H_(2)S and 1.5%*** biogas produced was used for lighting,water heating and *** results show that the biogas produced is of good quality and remains consistent with the literature.

Experimentation of a Forced Convection Solar Dryer for Drying Sweet Potatoes at the Higher Institute of Technology of Mamou-Guinea

This study was carried out at the Mamou Higher Institute of Technology during the period from March 10 to April 15, 2022, with the aim of designing and testing a solar dryer with forced convection by drying potatoes. The dryer was designed using local materials. Its main geometric parameters are: 1) height of the drying chamber (90 cm), 2) length of the drying chamber (50 cm), 3) width of the drying chamber (43 cm), 4) surface of the racks (0.1806 m2), 5) surface of the heat accumulator (0.2537 m2). The experiment focused on the vacuum test of the dryer for two days and that of the drying of the sweet potato for three days from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The average vacuum test temperature values of the three environments are respectively accumulator (43°C), dryer chamber (41°C) and ambient environment (34°C). Four kilograms (4 kg) of boiled sweet potato were dried. The average temperatures in the accumulator and in the drying chamber during the three days of drying are respectively 33°C and 39°C. The final mass of the dried product is 1.2 kg, with a quantity of water extracted of 2 liters or 63% of the initial mass of the product. The average drying rate is 0.074 kg/h. The drying kinetics showed a decreasing rate in the absence of the heating period and the constant rate period.

Contribution to the Management of Fecal Sludge in the Urban Commune of Mamou(Republic of Guinea)

In the town of Mamou,all homes with sanitation systems are equipped with autonomous installations not connected to a sewer *** emptying service is provided by manual emptiers and by the living environment and sanitation service of the urban municipality which has a single 6 m^(3)*** objective of this work is to determine the quantity of fecal sludge produced within the city for sustainable *** methodology adopted is based on a field survey and the use of three methods for evaluating the quantities of sludge(specific production,quantity of sludge collected by the sludge truck and the total production of sludge produced in the various sludge works).The results obtained show that,out of the 2,940 sanitation works identified,2,936 works have been emptied at least once since their *** 2,307 structures are emptied manually or 78.57%,against;619 structures emptied mechanically or 21.08%.The structures are emptied on average every 3 years for septic tanks and every 5 years for dry *** specific production of sludge is 685,241,532 m^(3)/year;the production of sludge by the mechanical emptying technique varies from 588,641.57 m^(3)/year to 724,800.46 m^(3)/year and the production of sludge by manual emptying is 1,573,709.33 m^(3)/year,for a total quantity of sludge produced including between 2,162,350 m^(3)/year to 685,241,531.9 m^(3)/year.

This research,carried out during September and October 2020 in the city of Kankan,made it possible to take stock of the city’s household waste *** quantities of waste from the four main landfills in the city are assessed,namely:Sogbè(1350.3 m^(3)),Station(195.5 m^(3)),Station University of Kankan(2491.5 m^(3))and Salamani(369.6 m^(3)).Waste from three landfills/dumps was characterized for 26 *** characterization covered 5,010.6 kg of waste,composed of 4263.9 kg of organic matter,462.1 kg of recyclable matter and 284.6 kg of inorganic *** survey concerned a target population of 403 inhabitants,which made it possible to determine a production ratio per habitant per day of(0.48 kg/habitant/d).Finally,a composting experiment of 2000 kg of organic matter was carried *** results obtained during this study constitute the basic elements allowing defining a better policy of management of household solid waste in the city of Kankan.

Work Condition and Health at a Body Paint Workshop in Conakry

Context: Working conditions in the car repair sector are difficult in general. This leads to health risk factors for inexperienced staff. In the bodywork painting workshop, the staff seemed less interested in the risks probably due to negligence or by lack of knowledge. This work aimed to describe the working conditions and their impact on the workers’ health in a workshop of bodywork painting in Conakry. Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study over 06 months (from July 01, 2021, to December 31, 2021). Were included the bodybuilders-painters, the painters and the bodybuilders. The data was collected during an interview. We analysed the personal data of the workers, the physical environment factors (lighting, noise, etc.) and, the clinical manifestations felt by the workers. Results: The average age was 37 years extenting from 18 to 54 years and, they were all men. Over 80% of workers were exposed to more than 1000 lux and, 78.2% of workers were exposed to the vibratory intensity level of the cordless drill > 2.5 m/s2. The most frequent symptoms were back pain, headache, itchy eyes, and numbness of fingers and hands. The analysis of working conditions and clinical manifestations showed a significant relationship between the level of illumination and the tingling eyes (p = 0.0007), the vibratory intensity of the drill and the numbness of fingers and hands (p = 0.01). This study revealed that some of the complaints cited are related to the working conditions. Conclusion: Working conditions in a bodywork paint workshop are occupational risk factors that become dangerous if they are unknown. A longitudinal study on the assessment of working conditions could better enlighten us on this phenomenon.

Sizing and Simulation of a Hybrid Hydroelectricity and Photovoltaic System with Storage for Supplying the Tamagaly District in Mamou,Guinea

The present study is a contribution to the study of hybrid electric power conversion systems in rural *** approach adopted uses a methodology for analyzing the complementarity that exists between the two renewable energy potentials(solar and hydraulic)based on their daily,monthly and annual *** different analytical formulas for sizing a PV(photovoltaic)field and a small hydroelectric power station are recalled in this *** HOMER software served as a tool for optimal sizing and simulation of the *** work focuses on the analysis of the behavior and control of the performances of a hybrid system made up of two renewable energy sources,hydroelectricity/PV with a storage system and a *** main results obtained relate to:monitoring of the variation in temperature variation,solar irradiation of the site,as well as the flow of the *** profile of the village’s annual charges is *** annual production of electrical energy is 527.936 kWh/*** hydroelectric plant will provide 155.316 kWh/year,or 29%,and for the PV field(372.620 kWh/year),or 71%.The monthly energy average is 43.995 kWh/*** average daily consumption is 731 kWh/d with a maximum power of 163 *** completion of this project makes it possible to cover all electrical loads in the Tamagaly district,with an annual energy production of 206.783 *** would make it possible to locally limit greenhouse gas emissions in the area.
