Evidence that cultural food practices of Adi women in Arunachal Pradesh,India,improve social-ecological resilience:insights for Sustainable Development Goals

Introduction:Sustainable use of biocultural diversity can help achieve Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)in many *** tribal communities of bio-culturally rich Northeastern India rely heavily on local food resources and knowledge for livelihood *** this study with Adi women of East Siang district,Arunachal Pradesh,India,we aimed to understand(i)access and use patterns for biocultural plants and animal species from diverse ecosystems and(ii)species diversity and conservation strategies deployed by *** employed a novel participatory approach called“recipe contest”to mobilize Adi women from 15 randomly selected remote and transitional *** collected through interviews,focus group discussions and transect walks from 75 women,were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative ***:We found that traditional local food was linked intricately with women’s knowledge,access patterns,and socio-cultural *** an end-user perspective,remote Adi villages had more widespread use of plant species(14 as food;34 as food-cum-ethnomedicine and 13 as income-generating species)and animal(17)as food in remote than in transitional ***,there were significant differences(p<0.000;0244 and 0.000,respectively)across the social groups for use of plant-and animal-derived food and *** different land use systems(i.e.,Jhum lands,home gardens,and morang forests),the highest diversity for food plant was found in home gardens while that for food-cum-ethnomedicinal plants and animal species was observed in morang *** women apply traditional agronomic,cultural,and harvest strategies,based on local knowledge and institutions and varying with social systems,to conserve their key local *** correlations(r=0.63 to 0.92)were seen between conservation and use of food and animal *** knowledge on these aspects was linked intricately to the socio-cultural milieu and is transmitted inter-generationa

Introduction:Evidence is mounting that traditional knowledge can play a critical role in shaping the biodiversity conservation strategies and maintaining ecosystem *** study was conducted with Adi community of Arunachal Pradesh(Ar P)state in the Eastern Indian Himalayas to understand as how local systems of forest classification governs conservation tradition and influences subsistence *** Adi villages were sampled from East Siang district of Ar P.A total of 197 men and 204 women(total of 401)Adi respondents were selected for this study.A combination of methodologies including in-depth interview,transect walks,focus group discussion,participant observation and informal interactions were combined for data ***:Local forests are classified into 10 different categories based on indicators such as topography,cultural significance,use typology,ownership rights and plant diversity *** people assign different values(economic,cultural and ecological)to different forest ***,morang followed by regpi and homegardens are perceived to be more valuable to the local needs than other forests with relative ranking of a particular forest reflecting its *** access several diverse services from these community-managed *** to men(3–35%),the role of women was assessed to be much higher(65 to 100%)in conserving forest ***-led practices,instrumental in sustainable forest management,included deliberate manipulations of micro-habitats,sustainable harvesting strategies and species *** were mostly involved in ownership and decision-making roles and in devising social norms to ensure *** celebrate a number of cultural events to sustain ***-based livelihoods are intrinsically connected to forest resource conservation and are governed by community *** of the community members gather plants,hunt wild animals and access other ecosystem se

Dear Editor,In this letter,we describe a rare presentation of pseudotumoural eosinophilic cystitis(EC)that mimicked a bladder tumor infiltrating into the left seminal *** objective was to raise awareness of the rare presentation of EC where it can extend beyond the confines of bladder *** report also highlights the importance of considering EC in the differential diagnosis of bladder tumors,especially in patients with a history of allergies,autoimmune disorders,or infections,even if the preoperative imaging is strongly suggestive of *** patient understood and agreed to each treatment *** consent was also obtained for the publication.

Postoperative Risk of Hepatic Decompensation after Orthopedic Surgery in Patients with Cirrhosis

Background and Aims:Previous studies have shown increased hepatic decompensation in patients with cirrhosis undergoing ***,there are little data available in cirrhotics undergoing orthopedic surgery compared to cirrhotics who did not undergo *** aim of this study was to examine the demographics,comorbid conditions,and clinical factors associated with hepatic decompensation within 90 days in cirrhotics who underwent orthopedic ***:This is a retrospective matched cohort *** criteria were cirrhosis diagnosis,age > 18 years,≥ 6 months continuous health plan membership,and a procedure code for orthopedic *** to five cirrhotic controls without orthopedic surgery were matched on age,gender,and cirrhosis diagnosis *** abstraction was performed for demographics,socioeconomics,clinical,and decompensation *** review was performed for *** analysis estimated relative risk of ***:Eight hundred fifty-three orthopedic surgery cases in cirrhotics were matched with 4,263 cirrhotic *** the cases and matched controls,the mean age was 60.5 years,and 52.2% were *** 90 days after surgery,cases had more decompensation compared to matched controls (12.8% vs 4.9%).Using multivariable analysis,orthopedic surgery,a 0.5 g/dL decrease in serum albumin,and a 1-unit increase in Charlson Comorbidity Index were associated with a significantincrease in decompensation within 90 days of ***,chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,and chronic kidney disease were seen with increased frequency in cases *** ***:Cirrhotics who underwent orthopedic surgery had a significant increase in hepatic decompensation within 90 days of surgery compared to matched *** incremental decrease in serum albumin and an incremental increase in the Charlson Comorbidity Index were significantly associated with hepatic decompensation after surgery.

Intraoperative blood loss in orthotopic liver transplantation:The predictive factors

Liver transplantation has been associated with massive blood loss and considerable transfusion requirements. Bleeding in orthotopic liver transplantation is multifactorial. Technical difficulties inherent to this complex surgical procedure and pre operative derangements of the primary and secondary coagulation system are thought to be the principal causes of perioperative hemorrhage. Intraoperative practices such as massive fluid resuscitation and resulting hypothermia and hypocalcemia secondary to citrate toxicity further aggravate the preexisting coagulopathy and worsen the perioperative bleeding. Excessive blood loss and transfusion during orthotopic liver transplant are correlated with diminished graft survival and increased septic episodes and prolonged ICU stay. With improvements in surgical skills, anesthetic technique, graft preservation, use of intraoperative cell savers and overall perioperative management, orthotopic liver transplant is now associated with decreased intra operative blood losses. The purpose of this review is to discuss the risk factors predictive of increased intra operative bleeding in patients undergoing orthotopic liver transplant.

Glacier inventories serve as critical baseline data for understanding the impacts of climate change on *** present study maps the outlines of glaciers in the Chandra-Bhaga Basin(western Himalaya)for the years 1993,2000,2010,and 2019 using Landsat Thematic Mapper(TM),Enhanced Thematic Mapper(ETM),and Operational Land Imager(OLI)datasets.A total of 251 glaciers,each having an area above 0.5 km^(2),were identified,which include 216 clean-ice and 35 debris-covered *** changes are estimated for three periods:1993-2000,2000-2010,and *** total glacierized area was 996±62 km^(2) in 1993,which decreased to 973±70 km^(2) in *** mean rate of glacier area loss was higher in the recent decade(2010-2019),at 0.036 km^(2),compared to previous decades(0.029 km^(2) in 2000-2010 and 0.025 km^(2) in 1993-2000).Supraglacial debris cover changes are also mapped over the period of 1993 and *** is found that the supraglacial debris cover increased by 14.12±2.54 km^(2)(15.2%)during *** field surveys on Chhota Shigri,Panchi II,Patsio,Hamtah,Mulkila,and Yoche Lungpa glaciers were carried out to validate the glacier outlines and supraglacial debris cover estimated using satellite *** of various morphological parameters on retreat were also *** is observed that small,clean ice,south oriented glaciers,and glaciers with proglacial lakes are losing area at faster rates than other glaciers in the basin.

Ebola virus disease: past, present and future

Ebola virus disease is one of the most deadly ailments known to mankind due to its high mortality rate(up to 90%) accompanying with the disease. Ebola haemorrhagic fever(EHF) is an infectious disease of animal that can be transmitted to both human and non-human primates. The first epidemic of EHF occurred in 1976 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The incubation period of ebola is less than 21 days. Ebola virus infections are depicted by immune suppression and a systemic inflammatory response that leads to damage of the vascular, coagulation and immune systems, causing multi-organ failure and shock. Five genetically distinct members of the Filoviridae family responsible for EHF are as follows: Zaire ebolavirus, Sudan ebolavirus, C?te d'Ivoire ebolavirus, Bundibugyo ebolavirus and Reston ebolavirus. The ongoing 2014 West Africa ebola epidemic has been considered as the most serious panic in the medical field with respect to both the number of human cases and death toll. The natural host for ebola virus is unknown, thus it is not possible to carry out programs to regulate or abolish virus from transmission to people. The ebola virus infection provides little chance to develop acquired immunity causing rapid progression of the disease. It is pertinent to mention that at present, there is no antiviral therapy or vaccine that is helpful against ebola virus infection in humans. The impediment of EHF necessitates much better understanding of the epidemiology of the disease, particularly the role of wildlife, as well as bats, in the spread of ebola virus to humans.

Outcome of bone marrow instillation at fracture site in intracapsular fracture of femoral neck treated by head preserving surgery

Purpose： The aim of present study is to evaluate the outcome of bone marrow instillation at the fracture site in fracture of intracapsular neck femur treated by head preserving surgery. Methods： This study included 32 patients of age group 18e50 years with closed fracture of intracapsular neck femur. Patients were randomized into two groups as per the plan generated via ***. The two groups were Group A （control）, in which the fracture of intracapsular neck femur was treated by closed reduction and cannulated cancellous screw fixation, and Group B （intervention）, in which additional percutaneous autologous bone marrow aspirate instillation at fracture site was done along with cannulated cancellous screw fixation. Postoperatively the union at fracture site and avascular necrosis of the femoral head were assessed on serial plain radiographs at final follow-up. Functional outcome was evaluated by Harris hip score. Results： The average follow-up was 19.6 months. Twelve patients in each group had union and 4 patients had signs of nonunion. One patient from each group had avascular necrosis of the femoral head. The average Harris hip score at final follow-up in Group A was 80.50 and in Group B was 75.73, which was found to be not significant. Conclusion： There is no significant role of adding on bone marrow aspirate instillation at the fracture site in cases of fresh fracture of intracapsular neck femur treated by head preserving surgery in terms of accelerating the bone healing and reducing the incidence of femoral head necrosis.
