Being the largest and most accessible organ of the human body,the skin could offer a window to diabetes-related complications on the ***,skin microvasculature is typically assessed by histological analysis,which is not suited for applications to large populations or longitudinal *** introduce ultra-wideband rasterscan optoacoustic mesoscopy(RSOM)for precise,non-invasive assessment of diabetes-related changes in the dermal microvasculature and skin micro-anatomy,resolved with unprecedented sensitivity and detail without the need for contrast *** unique imaging contrast,we explored a possible role for RSOM as an investigational tool in diabetes healthcare and offer the first comprehensive study investigating the relationship between different diabetes complications and microvascular features in *** applied RSOM to scan the pretibial area of 95 participants with diabetes mellitus and 48 age-matched volunteers without diabetes,grouped according to disease complications,and extracted six label-free optoacoustic biomarkers of human skin,including dermal microvasculature density and epidermal parameters,based on a novel image-processing *** then correlated these biomarkers to disease severity and found statistically significant effects on microvasculature parameters as a function of diabetes *** discuss how label-free RSOM biomarkers can lead to a quantitative assessment of the systemic effects of diabetes and its complications,complementing the qualitative assessment allowed by current clinical metrics,possibly leading to a precise scoring system that captures the gradual evolution of the disease.

Background: Sexual health needs are insufficiently met for persons living with rheumatological diseases and it is necessary to create better ways to meet these needs. Objective: To co-create a working model to improve sexual health for persons living with rheumatological diseases, that can be used by rheumatological teams in regular rheumatology practice. Design: This study applied a co-creation design with three key features: 1) it took a systems perspective with emergent multiple interactive entities;2) the research process was viewed as a creative endeavour with strong links to design, while human imagination and the individual experience of patient and staff were at the core of the creative design effort;3) the process of the co-creative efforts was as important as the generated product. 视觉反馈对运动功能执行的准确性有重要作用,而视觉反馈增益、反馈延迟时间及反馈频率都会影响运动功能的输出。通过测试不同增益的视觉反馈刺激对握力输出的影响,从行为学上研究视觉反馈增益在运动功能执行中的调节作用。作者设计了变化速度快慢不同的两种力量跟踪任务,在高低不同的两种视觉反馈增益下测定12个受试者力量输出的出错率和偏差两个参数。统计分析表明,视觉反馈增益对力量输出有显著影响;对同样的力量变化速度,视觉反馈增益提高使力量输出的调节作用增强。实验结果提示,视觉反馈增益变化会引起不同皮层区域参与运动功能的执行。

Seasonality in the occurrence of two lepidopterous olive pests in Egypt

Prays oleae Bern, （OM） andPalpita unionalis Hfib., （jM） are two of the most important pests in olive groves in Egypt. A 3-year monitoring study using sex pheromone traps in semi-arid and arid olive groves was performed. In the semi-arid grove, flight pattern of the OM was the same as in other Mediterranean countries, but in dates concordating plant phenology. The moth completes three generations annually： the first flight is in March to April, the second is in May to june and the third occurs in August to October. In the arid olive grove, an interesting flight pattern was observed. First flight was always very close or overlapped with the second one with no male catches during August to October. However, eggs were present most of the season, indicating unusually high female presence and oviposition activity of the OM during the absence of males in the traps. Generally, moth densities were significantly lower in low fruiting years than in higher ones and were also lower in the arid olive grove than in the semi-arid one. In contrast, jM males were present all season, exhibiting six to seven and three to four overlapping flight peaks in arid and semi-arid olive groves, respectively. Moth densities were significantly higher in the arid olive grove than those in the semi-arid one. This study shows that trapping location and fruit beating year are characteristics that strongly affect the grove-specific information needed to estimate correctly adult emergence and thus the timing of control measures.

A Major Change in the Stratigraphy of the Santorini Volcano in Greece

Two prominent and similar pumice series were described on Thera in 1879— the Upper and Lower Pumice Series (UPS and LPS). Since then, geologists have treated the two series separately because they seemingly occurred at distinct levels and had different ages. Here we show that these two pumice series are identical;there is no LPS on Santorini. All stratigraphic conclusions based on the LPS from Santorini should therefore be discarded. The water-filled Santorini caldera with its steep inner slopes existed before the eruption. Volcano-tectonic effects in connection with caldera formation created concentric terraces that were mantled by the products of the Late Bronze Age (LBA) eruption. Subsequent erosion only left remnants of the mantle behind. Topographic effects followed by slumping during sedimentation caused confusion of the stratigraphy on the caldera wall. Our results are supported by geological, paleontological and archaeological evidence. Furthermore, the caldera with its minerals, pigments, harbours and hot springs was accessible for the Thereans. This reinterpretation opens new perspectives for archaeological research. The catastrophic LBA eruption (previously called the Minoan eruption) destroyed a flourishing culture on Santorini and impacted neighbouring cultures around 1613 BC.

Evaluating Breed Complementarity and Sexed Semen with Maternal Use of Afrikaner Germplasm

Livestock production impacts food security of developing countries, especially where efficiency of production is compromised by environmental stressors. In South Africa, breeding with indigenous Afrikaner cattle that are genetically well adapted to subtropical environments is considered an essential strategy for sustainable beef production. Today, there is a potential for farmers to participate in commercial systems that join adapted Afrikaner germplasm, used in a specialized maternal role, with exotic terminal sires to optimize production. The objective of this study was to assess productivity of five simulated production systems: 1) straightbred Afrikaner mated naturally, 2) a straight-bred Afrikaner cow herd with two sections;one section to produce replacement females and the other to cross with Charolais terminal sires, both using natural mating, 3) similar to 2, but applying sexed semen to produce replacement females, 4) similar to 2, but using a multi-breed composite dam line with a breed combination of 50% Afrikaner, 25% Hereford and 25% Simmental, and 5) similar to 4, but again applying sexed semen to produce replacement females. Parameter estimates needed to compare these systems were extracted from the scientific literature. Relative to straightbred Afrikaner dams, the simulated composite dams were more fit producing 7.8% more calves and their progeny performance was improved by reducing feed intake (-24.4%) and increasing meat production (+11.7%). The potential benefit of allocating more cows to the terminal sire was insufficient to offset the reduction in pregnancy rate that results with the use of sexed semen. Thus, system 4 had the greatest productivity (+23.1%) while requiring 22.8% less feed for finishing the progeny to be harvested relative to the purebred Afrikaner system. 背景与目的:18F-脱氧葡萄糖(fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose,18F-FDG)PET/CT显像可明显提高肺癌、食管癌等多种肿瘤的诊断、分期与疗效监测的准确性,有助于更准确地制定治疗方案。本研究探讨全身18F-FDG PET/CT显像在鼻咽癌首次分期、再分期及疗效监测中的临床应用价值。方法:回顾性分析澳大利亚Peter MacCallum肿瘤中心2002年2月至2005年12月43例鼻咽癌患者的18F-FDG PET/CT全身扫描报告,根据临床资料、病理结果及临床随访结果,计算18F-FDG PET/CT与传统影像学检查CT、MRI的准确性、特异性、灵敏度、阳性预测值与阴性预测值,并对结果进行比较和分析。结果:18F-FDG PET/CT诊断鼻咽癌总的准确率、敏感性、特异性、阳性预测值与阴性预测值分别为95.3%、100.0%、85.7%、93.8%、100.0%,传统影像学检查CT、MRI分别为65.5%、79.4%、64.7%、81.8%、57.9%。18F-FDGPET/CT诊断结果使2例首次分期、7例再分期患者治疗方案得到改变,并影响1例首次分期和3例再分期患者治疗方案的制定;在疗效监测组中,指导医生修改治疗方案共11例(其中5例为原则性的修改)。18F-FDG PET/CT检测到2例第二原发肿瘤,1例是甲状腺癌,1例是低度恶性胃癌。结论:18F-FDG PET/CT全身显像对鼻咽癌N、M分期与疗效监测的临床作用可能优于CT、MR检查。
