Aims Beech(Fagus sylvatica L.)is an important species in natural and managed forests in *** drought-sensitive species dominates even-aged stands as well more natural stands composed of a mixture of tree species,age and size *** study evaluates the extent that heterogeneity in spacing and tree diameter affect the seasonal availability and use of *** Two stands were evaluated:(i)a heterogeneous forest remnant(NAT)with trees up to;300 years old,a mean top height of 28.4 m and a total of 733 stems ha1with stem diameters averaging 18 cm and(ii)an even-aged 80-year old stand(MAN),with a height of 25 m,and a total of 283 stems ha1 with diameters averaging 38 *** sap flow,Js(g m2 s1),was continuously measured in 12(MAN)and 13(NAT)trees using 20-mm long heat dissipation *** tree measures of sap flow were correlated using non-linear statistical methods with air vapour pressure deficit(D,hPa)and global radiation(Rg,J m2 day1),along with constraints imposed by reductions in soil water content(SWc).SWc was measured as volumetric%using time domain *** Findings The daily integrated Js(Js-sum)for trees growing in the evenly spaced MAN stand and trees in canopy and closed forest positions in NAT stand decreased as the availability of soil moisture was *** the heterogeneous NAT stand,SWc in a recently formed canopy gap remained high throughout the vegetation *** on regression models,the predicted relative decrease in Js-sum for dry relative to moist soil water conditions in the closed forest(at mean daily D=10 hPa)was 7–11%for trees near the gap and 39–42%for trees in the closed *** MAN,the reduction in Js-sum was 29%in dry relative to moist ***-sum in the outer 20 mm of the xylem in NAT was lower than that in MAN and the rate of decline in Js with xylem depth was less in NAT than in *** MAN,Js-sum in deep and outer xylem was negatively affected at low soil moisture availability

A population of common ragweed in Ontario was confirmed to be resistant to glyphosate in 2011. Group 2 [acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors] resistant common ragweed was first confirmed in Ontario in 2000. Previously, glyphosate provided excellent control of common ragweed in glyphosate resistant soybean but with the confirmation of glyphosate resistant (GR) common ragweed, alternative herbicides need to be evaluated. Eight field trials with preplant herbicides were completed over two years (2013 and 2014) in fields with confirmed GR common ragweed. Tank-mixes of glyphosate and linuron or metribuzin provided 88% - 99% and 86% - 98% control 4 weeks after application (WAA) and 80% - 92% and 80% - 95% control 8 WAA, respectively. However, these herbicides also had among the highest environmental impact of the herbicides tested. Based on the results of these studies, GR common ragweed can be controlled with residual herbicides when applied preemergence in soybean. currently, there are no post emergence herbicides that provide adequate control of GR common ragweed, therefore, preemergence herbicides with residual are essential for full season control.

The application of genomic selection in fruit tree crops is expected to enhance breeding eficiency by increasing prediction accuracy,increasing selection intensity and decreasing generation *** objectives of this study were to assess the accuracy of prediction and selection response in commercial apple breeding programmes for key *** training population comprised 977 individuals derived from 20 pedigreed fllsib *** phenotypic data were available on 10 traits related to productivity and fruit external appearance and genotypic data for 7829 SNPs obtained with an llumina 20K SNP *** these data,a genome-wide prediction model was built and subsequently used to calculate genomic breeding values of five application fllsib *** application families had genotypes at 364 SNPs from a dedicated 512 SNP array,and these genotypic data were extended to the high-density level by *** five families were phenotyped for 1 year and their phenotypes were compared to the predicted breeding *** of genomic prediction across the 10 traits reached a maximum value of 0.5 and had a median value of *** accuracies were strongly affected by the phenotypic distribution and heritability of *** the largest family,significant selection response was observed for traits with high heritability and symmetric phenotypic *** that showed non-significant response often had reduced and skewed phenotypic variation or low *** the five application families the accuracies were uncorrelated to the degree of relatedness to the training *** results underline the potential of genomic prediction to accelerate breeding progress in outbred fruit tree crops that still need to overcome long generation intervals and extensive phenotyping costs.
