Purification of solar cell silicon m.terials through filtration

Silicon is the m.terial m.st com.only used in the m.nufacturing of photovoltaic (PV) cells. In the current study, laboratory experim.nts of purification of solar cell silicon m.terials through filtration are carried out. Inclusion rem.val from.silicon was investigated. The purpose is to achieve clean silicon m.terials for solar cells. Silicon sam.les and filter sam.les were analyzed using m.croscope observation, EPm., and X-ray detection. Silicon nitride (Si3N4) and silicon carbide (SiC) particles are the m.in non-m.tallic inclusions present in top-cut silicon scrap. Alm.st all inclusions larger than 10 μm.can be rem.ved from.silicon by the porous foam.filter. In m.ss fraction, m.re than 90% inclusions are rem.ved. Si3N4 particles are m.inly rem.ved on the top surface of the filter, and SiC particles are m.inly rem.ved by entering the pores and attaching to the filter m.terial. SiC inclusions are not only sim.ly attached on the surface of the filter m.terial, but are found also inside the filter m.terial. There are SiC bridges near the filter m.terials. These bridges m.y fill the spaces between filter m.terial, and this will further retard inclusions passing through the filter. Three-dim.nsional turbulent fluid flow and inclusion m.tion in the filter was calculated. Both experim.ntal observation and fluid flow sim.lation indicate that m.st of the inclusions are entrapped at the upper part of the filter.

Root Exudation of Organic Acids of Herbaceous Pioneer Plants and Their Growth in Sterile and Non-Sterile Nutrient-Poor,Sandy Soils from.Post-m.ning Sites

Nutrient-poor, sandy soils form.the prevailing substrate at post-m.ning sites of the Lusatian region(Brandenburg, Germ.ny) and present a challenge for vegetation developm.nt. We studied the organic acid quantity and com.osition of three com.only occurring pioneer plant species, the legum.s Lotus corniculatus L. and Trifolium.arvense L. and the grass Calam.grostis epigeios(L.) Roth, to determ.ne if plant growth and exudation differed with(non-sterilized soil) and without(sterilized soil) an indigenous soil m.crobial com.unity. We investigated whether organic acids were found in the rhizosphere and surrounding soil and whether this influenced nutrient m.bilization. This study consists of linked field investigations and a greenhouse experim.nt. Plants were grown in the greenhouse in either sterilized or non-sterilized sandy soil from.a reclam.tion site in the Lusatian m.ning landscape(Welzow Su¨d, East Germ.ny). After seven m.nths, the plant biom.ss, root m.rphology, organic acids, and water-soluble nutrients and root colonization with arbuscular m.corrhizal fungi(Am.) and dark septate endophytes(DSE) were analyzed. Roots of all three plants in the field and greenhouse experim.nts were highly colonized with Am.. Calam.grostis epigeios and T. arvense had a significantly higher colonization frequency with DSE than L. corniculatus. The quantity and com.osition of organic acids strongly differed am.ng plant species, with the highest num.er of organic acids found for L. corniculatus and lowest for C. epigeios. The quantity of organic acids was greatly reduced in all plants under sterilized soil conditions. However, the com.osition of organic acids and plant growth in sterilized soil were reduced for both legum.s, but not for C. epigeios, which had a higher biom.ss under sterilized conditions. Changes in nutrient concentrations in the field rhizosphere soil relative to those in the control were m.asurable after seven m.nths. While the spectrum.of organic acids and the growth

Evaluation of Kenyan Orange Fleshed Sweet Potato （Ipom.ea batatas Lam.） Purees for Functional Food Production

Consum.tion of functional foods with health prom.ting benefits and/or disease prevention has been on the increase globally. The study aim.d at evaluating the potential of utilizing Kenyan orange fleshed sweet potato （Ipom.ea batatas Lam.） for functional food production with aesthetics benefits. Purees from.three different varieties of orange fleshed sweet potato （OFSP） were analyzed for nutritional, physicochem.cal and m.crobial quality, The findings of the study show that the three purees were all m.crobiologically safe and of near neutral pH, but differed significantly （P 〈 0.05） in nutrient content （dry m.tter content, 12.76-28.23%; crude fiber, 1.37-2.90% fresh weight basis （FWB）; 13-carotene, 0.94-9.27 m./100g dry weight basis （DWB）; starch, 10.20-18.30% FWB ＆ total sugar 27.08-31.76% DWB）. The purees had attractive appearance （ranging from.yellow to dark orange）, with varying significantly different spectrophotom.ter hunters color scale （P 〈 0.05）, and flow ability. Conclusions from.the findings show great potential of utilizing the varying properties of OFSP puree to produce enriched functional food products such as probiotic/prebiotic dairy, beverages, bakery and baby foods.

Background:m.them.tical m.dels propose leg length as a lim.ting factor in determ.ning the m.xim.m.walking *** study evaluated the effectiveness of a leg length-based m.del in predicting m.xim.m.walking velocity in an applied race walking situation,by com.aring experienced and novice race walkers during conditions where strictly no flight tim.(FT)was perm.tted and in sim.lated com.etition conditions(i.e.,FTm.).m.thods:Thirty-four participants(18 experienced and l6 novice race walkers)were recruited for this *** Optojum. Next system.8 m.was used to determ.ne walking velocity,step frequency,step length,ground contact tim.,and FT during race walking over a range of *** were m.de between novice and experienced participants in predicted m.xim.m.velocity and actual velocities achieved with no flight and velocities with FTm.xim.m.velocity to predicted ***:In novices,no significant difference was found between predicted and m.xim.m.walking speeds without FT but there was a sm.ll 5.8%gain in m.xim.m.speed when FT≤40 *** experienced race walkers,there was a significant reduction in m.xim.m.walking speed com.ared with predicted m.xim.m.pm.xim.m.walking speed with FTm.xim.l walking velocity in novice walkers but not a good predictor of m.xim.m.walking speed in well-trained walkers who appear to have optim.sed their walking technique to m.ke use of non-visible flight periods of less than 40 *** gain in velocity above predicted m.xim.m.m.y be a useful index of race walking proficiency.
