BACKGROUND Microangiopathic hemolytic anemia(MAHA) with thrombocytopenia and organ failure caused by tumor-associated thrombotic microangiopathy(TMA) is a lifethreatening oncological emergency. Rapid diagnosis and precise distinction from other forms of TMA is crucial for appropriate therapy, which aims at treating the underlying malignancy. However, the prognosis of patients with cancer-related(CR)-MAHA is limited. To date, less than 50 patients with gastric cancer and CRMAHA have been reported, mainly as single case reports, and detailed information on treatment strategies and outcome are scarce. We analyzed the characteristics and outcomes data of CR-MAHA patients with gastric cancer treated at our center between 2012 and *** To gain knowledge about CR-MAHA and the course of *** We retrospectively analyzed patients using an institutional prospectively maintained database. Patients who had CR-MAHA but other cancer types or cancer of unknown primary were excluded. The basic requirements for inclusion were: Histologically proven gastric adenocarcinoma;and clinical diagnosis of hemolytic anemia with schistocytes with or without thrombocytopenia. The observation period for each patient started with the first day of documented symptoms. The follow-up period for this analysis ended on February 1, *** We identified eight patients with a median age of 54 years. Histologically, all patients had(partial) diffuse subtypes of gastric adenocarcinoma with partial or complete signet cell morphology. All patients had metastatic disease and one patient had a microsatellite instability-high(MSI-H) tumor. In three patients, clinical signs of MAHA preceded the diagnosis of cancer, and in two patients, CRMAHA indicated recurrent disease. All patients had severe hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia. Single-agent Gemcitabine has been the standard treatment for advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma in the past years. Due to the aggressive and often chemotherapy-refractory character of this malignancy, systemic treatment options still remain limited. Many combination therapies have been evaluated in clinical trials to improve survival over Gemcitabine alone, until recently without satisfying results. Based on the positive results of a recent randomized trial, the combination of Gemcitabine and Capecitabine might become a new standard as first-line treatment for advanced pancreatic cancer. The clinical advantage of Erlotinib as a novel targeted agent in combination with Gemcitabine seems to be only marginal. Due to the small number of studies, there is still no standard of care in second-line therapy, but Oxaliplatin seems to be an active treatment option in Gemcitabine refractory disease. This article will review the development of cytotoxic antitumoral treatment for advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma (locally advanced, irresectable and/or metastatic disease) including monotherapies and newer approaches with combination therapies.

Palliative chemotherapy for gastroesophageal cancer in old and very old patients: A retrospective cohort study at the National Center for Tumor Diseases, Heidelberg

Angiosperms sexual reproduction involves interactions between the two female gametes in the embryo sac and the two male gametes released by the pollen tube. The two synergids of the embryo sac express the FERONIA/SIRENE receptor-like kinase, which controls the discharge of the two sperm cells from the pollen tube. FER/SRN may respond to a ligand from the pollen tube. Alternatively, the interaction between FER/SRN and a ligand from the embryo sac may lead to a state of competence of the synergids allowing pollen tube discharge. Here, we report the new mutant scylla （syl） impaired in the control of pollen tube discharge. This mutant also produces autonomous endosperm development in ab- sence of fertilization--a trait associated with the FERTILIZATION INDEPENDENT SEED （FIS） mutant class. This led us to iden- tify autonomous endosperm in srn mutants and to demonstrate synergistic interactions between srn and the fis mutants. In addition, the fis mutants display defects in pollen tube discharge as in srn and syl mutants, confirming the interaction between the two pathways. Our findings suggest that pollen tube discharge is controlled by an interaction between the synergids expressing SRN/FER and the central cell expressing FIS genes.

France is a country with 67 million inhabitants and is part of the European *** consumption in humans is higher in France as compared to the European average,especially in outpatient settings(1–2).The burden of antibiotic resistance is also high,as compared to the European average,with an estimated 5,500 deaths per year associated with multidrug-resistant bacterial infections(3).Encouraging results have,however,been observed over the last several years:antibiotic consumption in the community,in nursing homes and in hospitals showed a decreasing trend,as well as certain resistant bacteria,such as 3rd-generation cephalosporin-or fluoroquinolone-resistant Escherichia coli(1–2,4–5).The COVID-19 pandemic has had a dramatic impact on antibiotic consumption and its long-term impact on antibiotic resistance is being carefully monitored(1).

Objective:In patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNSCC),cetuximab[a monoclonal antibody targeting epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR)]has been shown to improve overall survival when combined with radiotherapy in the locally advanced setting or with chemotherapy in first-line recurrent and/or metastatic(R/M)setting,*** biomarkers of resistance to cetuximab have been identified in metastatic colorectal cancer,no biomarkers of efficacy have been identified in ***,we aimed to identify biomarkers of cetuximab sensitivity/resistance in ***:HNSCC patients treated with cetuximab at the Curie Institute,for whom complete clinicopathological data and formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded(FFPE)tumor tissue collected before cetuximab treatment were available,were *** analyses of PTEN and EGFR were performed to assess protein expression ***3 CA and H/N/KRAS mutations were analyzed using high-resolution melting(HRM)and Sanger *** evaluated the predictive value of these alterations in terms of progression-free survival(PFS).Results:Hot spot activating PIK3 CA and KRAS/HRAS mutations were associated with poor PFS among HNSCC patients treated with cetuximab in the first-line R/M setting,but not among HNSCC patients treated with cetuximab in combination with *** of PTEN protein expression had a negative predictive value among HNSCC patients treated with cetuximab and *** EGFR expression did not predict cetuximab sensitivity in our patient ***:Hot spot activating PIK3 CA and RAS mutations predicted cetuximab resistance among HNSCC patients in the firstline R/M setting,whereas loss of PTEN protein expression predicted resistance to cetuximab when combined to radiotherapy.

Neutralizing antibodies targeting the receptor-binding domain(RBD)of the SARS-CoV-2 spike(S)block severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)entry into cells via surface-expressed angiotensin-converting enzyme 2(ACE2).We used a surrogate virus neutralization test(sVNT)and SARS-CoV-2 S protein-pseudotyped vesicular stomatitis virus(VSV)vector-based neutralization assay(pVNT)to assess the degree to which serum antibodies from coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)convalescent patients interfere with the binding of SARS-CoV-2 S to *** tests revealed neutralizing anti-SARS-CoV-2 S antibodies in the sera of ~90% of mildly and 100% of severely affected COVID-19 convalescent ***,sVNT and pVNT results correlated strongly with each other and to the levels of anti-SARS-CoV-2 S1 IgG and IgA ***,levels of neutralizing antibodies correlated with the duration and severity of clinical symptoms but not with patient *** to pVNT,sVNT is less sophisticated and does not require any biosafety *** this assay is also much faster and cheaper,sVNT will not only be important for evaluating the prevalence of neutralizing antibodies in a population but also for identifying promising plasma donors for successful passive antibody therapy.

While the incidence of gastric cancer has decreased worldwide in recent decades,the incidence of signetring cell carcinoma(SRCC) is rising. SRCC has a specific epidemiology and oncogenesis and has two forms: early gastric cancer,which can be resected endoscopically in some cases and which has a better outcome than non-SRCC,and advanced gastric cancer,which is generally thought to have a worse prognosis and lower chemosensitivity than non-SRCC. However,the prognosis of SRCC and its chemosensitivity with specific regimens are still controversial as SRCC is not specifically identified in most studies and its poor prognosis may be due to its more advanced stage. It therefore remains unclear if a specific therapeutic strategy is justified,as the benefit of perioperative chemotherapy and the value of taxanebased chemotherapy are unclear. In this review we analyze recent data on the epidemiology,oncogenesis,prognosis and specific therapeutic strategies in both early and advanced SRCC of the stomach and in hereditary diffuse gastric cancer.

Study of HIV Prevalence and Behaviors in Rural Areas of Goudomp Health District (Senegal)

This study aims to determine the factors related to HIV-positive status in people aged 15 to 49 years of age in the commune of Niagha in Goudomp. The study was descriptive and analytically cross-cutting and had taken place in a release of 2018. The data was collected on anonymous questionnaires and then analyzed using R software after entering with Epi 7 software. Bivariate analyses and logistical modelling have been used to investigate the factors associated with HIV status. The sample included 400 people, and a participation rate of 100% was obtained in relation to the administration of the questionnaire. For the detection of HIV infection, 318 people agreed to do so, a proportion of 79.7%. The average age of the respondents was 27.8 years with a standard deviation of 9.1 and extremes of 15 to 49 years. 21.5% of respondents were under 20 years of age, the median was 26 years. With 58.8% of women, the sex ratio (M/F) was 0.7. In this study, 11.5% of respondents did not believe in the existence of HIV infection, 92.0% were sexually active, and 40.5% had sex with casual partners. The main places for casual sex were cultural events (84.0%), weekly markets (53.1%), religious events (27.8%) and during travel (22.8%). Among them, only 20 respondents, or 12.3%, declared that they systematically protect themselves with a condom during these occasional sexual relations. This wearing of condoms was found in 20.7% of singles and 10.7% of married couples having casual sex. In this study, 60.0% of the respondents declared that they had paid for sex, although this practice is not cited in income-generating activities. Non-consensual sex was found in 6.5% of the respondents. In this study, 319 people agreed to be tested for HIV, or 79.7% of the sample. HIV infection was found in 19 people, 6.0% seroprevalence, with 16 cases of HIV 1 infection and three cases of HIV 2 infection. Several risk behaviors were found in this study.
