Background and Aims:There is an unmet need for new bi-omarkers to improve diagnostics and prognostics in primary biliary cholangitis(PBC)and primary sclerosing cholangitis(PSC).Inter-α-inhibitor heavy chain 4(ITIH4)is an abun-dant,liver-produced protein,and its synthesis may be al-tered in liver *** investigated whether ITIH4 plas-ma concentrations were affected in PBC and PSC ***:We developed an immunoassay specific for ITIH4 and determined ITIH4 plasma concentrations in 66 PBC,126 PSC,92 autoimmune hepatitis(AIH),67 chronic hepatitis C(CHC),33 alcoholic hepatitis(AH)patients and 138 healthy controls(HCs).Hepatic ITIH4 expression was investigated by immunohistochemistry in ***:The mean plas-ma concentration of ITIH4 was almost doubled in PBC[409μg/mL(95%CI:388-431)]and 35%higher in PSC[308μg/mL,(95%CI:296-319)]compared with HCs[226μg/mL(95%CI:221-231);p<0.001].In PBC patients,ITIH4 correlated with IgM(rho=0.49,p<0.001).Responders to ursodeoxycholic acid treatment(UDCA)had lower levels of ITIH4 than incomplete responders[395μg/mL(95%CI:364-425)]vs.460μg/mL(95%CI:421-498);p=0.02].Four weeks of UDCA treatment had no effect(p=0.19).In-creased ITIH4 immunohistochemical staining was seen in a liver biopsy from a PBC ***4 levels in AIH[224μg/mL(95%CI:208-241)]and HCs were similar(p=0.8).ITIH4 levels were lower in AH[199μg/mL(95%CI:175-223)]and CHC[202μg/mL(192-212)]patients than in HCs(p<0.05).Conclusions:The plasma concentration of ITIH4 was highly elevated in patients with PBC and PSC,suggesting that ITIH4 should be further investigated as a biomarker in cholestatic liver disease.

Background: The IMF fears the COVID-19 pandemic will create an economic down-turn matching the Great Depression. More recent recessions have led to physical and mental health problems including suicide deaths of young adults (15 - 34). We aim to identify risk patterns of mortality by age from influenza and suicide mortality in peak years from 1979 to 2016 to see if there are lessons to be learned for policy makers and psychiatric services. Method: Using WHO mortality data for 1979-2016 peak years of influenza deaths and suicides are identified in ten Western countries. Death rates per million in each age-band are calculated for both sexes and the percentage of the total deaths accruing in each of five age-bands for influenza and suicides. Ratios of influenza to suicide by age in regard to rates and percentages of deaths indicate differential risk mortality and morbidity patterns. Results: Of the ten country’s average Influenza deaths, 95% occurred in people over 55, including 80% - 85% for the over 75’s. Conversely it was 59% of suicides occurred in peoples aged Discussion: IMF predicts major unemployment, which is likely to create mental health problems, including suicide as well as worsening child health outcomes linked to relative poverty. These wider inter-related factors should be considered by policy-makers and mental health services. The age patterns of risk of mortality point towards a cumulative summation of morbidity and mortality risks of the socio-economic consequences of the COVID pandemic.

Current global warming is particularly pronounced in the Arctic and arthropods are expected to respond rapidly to these changes. Long-term studies of individual arthropod species from the Arctic are, however, virtually absent. We examined butterfly specimens collected from yellow pitfall traps over 14 years (1996–2009) at Zackenberg in high-arctic, north-east Greenland. Specimens were previously sorted to the family level. We identified them to the species level and examined long-term species-specific phenological responses to recent summer warming. Two species were rare in the samples (Polaris fritillaryBolo-ria polarisand Arctic bluePlebejus glandon) and statistical analyses of phenological responses were therefore restricted to the two most abundant species (Arctic fritillary,B. charicleaand Northern clouded yellowColias hecla). Our analyses demonstrated a trend towards earlier flight seasons inB. chariclea, but not inC. hecla. The timing of onset, peak and end of the flight season inB. charicleawere closely related to snowmelt, July temperature and their interaction, whereas onset, peak and end of the flight season inC. heclawere only related to timing of snowmelt. The duration of the butterfly flight season was significantly positively related to the temporal overlap with floral resources in both butterfly species. We further demonstrate that yellow pitfall traps are a useful alternative to transect walks for butterfly recording in tundra habitats. More phenological studies of Arctic arthropods should be carried out at the species level and ideally be analysed in context with interacting species to assess how ongoing climate change will affect Arctic biodiversity in the near future.
