In photosynthetic organisms, tetrapyrrole-mediated retrograde signals are proposed to contribute to a bal- anced nuclear gene expression （NGE） in response to metabolic activity in chloroplasts. We followed an experimental short- term approach that allowed the assessment of modified NGE during the first hours of specifically modified enzymatic steps of the Mg branch of tetrapyrrole biosynthesis, when pleiotropic effects of other signals can be avoided. In response to 24-h-induced silencing of CHLH, CHLM, and CHL27 encoding the CHLH subunit of Mg chelatase, the Mg protoporphyrin methyltransferase and Mg protoporphyrin monomethylester cyclase, respectively, deactivated gene expression rapidly led to reduced activity of the corresponding enzymes and altered Mg porphyrin levels. But NGE was not substantially altered. When these three genes were continuously inactivated for up to 4 d, changes of transcript levels of nuclear genes were determined. CHL27 silencing for more than 24h results in necrotic leaf lesions and modulated transcript levels of oxidative stress-responsive and photosynthesis-associated nuclear genes （PhANGs）. The prolonged deactivation of CHLH and CHLM results in slightly elevated transcript levels of PhANGs and tetrapyrrole-associated genes. These time-resolved studies indicate a complex scenario for the contribution of tetrapyrrole biosynthesis on NGE mediated by IO2-induced signaling and feedback-regulated ALA synthesis.

Climatic niche shift of an invasive shrub (Ulex europaeus): a global scale comparison in native and introduced regions

Aims Invasive species,which recently expanded,may help understand how climatic niche can shift at the time scale of the current global ***,we address the climatic niche shift of an invasive shrub(common gorse,Ulex europaeus)at the world and regional scales to assess how it could contribute to increasing *** Based on a 28187 occurrences database,we used a combination of 9 species distribution models(SDM)to assess regional climatic niche from both the native range(Western Europe)and the introduced range in different parts of the world(North-West America,South America,North Europe,Australia and New Zealand).Important Findings Despite being restricted to annual mean temperature between 4℃ and 22℃,as well as annual precipitation higher than 300 mm/year,the range of bioclimatic conditions suitable for gorse was very *** on a native versus introduced SDM comparison,we highlighted a niche expansion in North-West America,South America and to a lesser degree in Australia,while a niche displacement was assessed in North *** niche changes induced an increase in potential occupied areas by gorse by 49,111,202 and 283%in Australia,North Europe,North-West America and South America,*** the contrary,we found no evidence of niche change in New Zealand,which presents similar climatic condition to the native environment(Western Europe).This study highlights how niche expansion and displacement of gorse might increase invasibility at regional *** change in gorse niche toward new climatic conditions may result from adaptive plasticity or genetic evolution and may explain why it has such a high level of *** into account the possibility of a niche shift is crucial to improve invasive plants management and control.

Success of three soil restoration techniques on seedling survival and growth of three plant species in the Sahel of Burkina Faso(West Africa)

In the Sahel of Africa, where 90 % of the population depends on natural resources for their liveli- hood, a large part of the soils are structurally unstable, prone to crusting and hard setting, and have low water holding capacity, which hamper vegetation establishment. The effect of soil restoration techniques on survival and growth of seedlings of Acacia nilotica, Acacia tortilis and Jatropha curcas was tested in completely barren, degraded land in a Sahelian ecosystem in Burkina Faso. A total of 522 seedlings （174 plants of each plant species） were planted in a randomized complete block design with three replicates combining three soil preparation techniques： half-moon, zai＂ and standard plantation. Survival and growth rates evaluated over 20 months were significantly higher using the half-moon technique compared with the other two techniques. Survival rates of plant species planted using half-moon technique were 62.5, 28.57 and 10.71% for A. nilotica, A. tortilis and J. curcas respec- tively, but in za＇i and standard planting, seedling survival was zero. The low survival rate of J. curcas using the half-moon technique may indicate that J. curcas is unsuit- able for barren and degraded land, whereas A. nilotica and A. tortilis appear to be promising tree species for rehabil- itation of degraded land.

Comparative study of the effects of terlipressin versus splenectomy on liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy in rats

BACKGROUND: Post-hepatectomy liver failure as a result of insufficient liver remnant is a feared complication in liver surgery. Efforts have been made to find new strategies to support liver regeneration. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of terlipressin versus splenectomy on postoperative liver function and liver regeneration in rats undergoing 70%partial hepatectomy. METHODS: Seventy-two male Wistar rats were randomly assigned into three groups(n=24 in each group): 70% partial hepatectomy as control(PHC), 70% partial hepatectomy with splenectomy(PHS) or 70% partial hepatectomy with a micropump for terlipressin administration(PHT). Eight rats in each group were sacrificed on postoperative day(POD) 1,3 and 7. To assess liver regeneration, immunohistochemical analysis of liver tissue using bromodeoxyuridine(BrdU) and Ki-67 labeling was performed. Portal venous pressure, serum concentrations of creatinine, urea, albumin, bilirubin and prothrombin time as well as liver-, body-weight and their ratio were determined on POD 1, 3 and ***: The liver-, body-weight and their ratio were not statistically different among the groups. On POD 1, 3 and 7 portal venous pressure in the intervention groups(PHT:8.13 ±1.55, 10.38±1.30, 6.25±0.89 cm H2O and PHS: 7.50±0.93,8.88 ±2.42, 5.75±1.04 cm H2O) was lower compared to the control group(PHC: 8.63±2.06, 10.50±2.45, 6.50±2.67 cmH2O). Hepatocyte proliferation in the intervention groups was delayed, especially after splenectomy on POD 1(Brd U: PHS vs PHC, 20.85% ±13.05% vs 28.11%±10.10%; Ki-67, 20.14%±14.10% vs 23.96% ±11.69%). However, none of the differences were statistically ***: Neither the administration of terlipressin nor splenectomy improved liver regeneration after 70% partial hepatectomy in rats. Airborne micro- and nanoparticles-aerosols - play an important role in many natural phenomena and in a variety of industrial processes, as well as the public health issue. They may be of natural or anthropogenic origin; their presence in an environment might be intentional or due to undesirable release. In any case, merely the particle detection and characterization, ideally in real-time, provide an insight into the potential burden allowing also controlling and abatement measures. Due to the broad size range it is not possible to characterize the entire particle spectrum with only one method. This contribution discusses selected optical techniques based on elastic light scattering, which are suitable for characterization of micrometer sized particles and particular electrical techniques allowing measurement of nanoparticles. It is shown that combination of instruments measuring different properties of the same nanoparticles offers derivative parameters contributing to more complete characterization of aerosols
