The Oxidative Stress Balance Measured in Humans with Different Markers, Following a Single Oral Antioxidants Supplementation or a Diet Poor of Antioxidants

Four different markers of oxidative stress [OS] (8-OHdG in urine, 8-Iso-PGF, hydroperoxides and carbonylated proteins in plasma, a new marker of antioxidant capacity (AC) in plasma/urine/saliva, and hs-CRP were determined concomitantly in twelve apparently healthy volunteers. All the markers were determined at 8 am, 10 am, 12 am in three different moments: after a week of normal diet (baseline), after an acute supplementation with an antioxidant pool, and finally following a week of a diet poor in antioxidant. The supplementation of antioxidants determined a significant (t test p < 0.05) decrease up to 12% of 8-OHdG in urine and up to 46% of carbonylated proteins in plasma, whereas hydroperoxides and 8-Iso-PGF were unmodified;the antioxidant capacity increased significantly (t test p < 0.05) up to 19%, 78%, and 67%, respectively in plasma, urine and saliva. Hs-CRP was *** diet poor in antioxidant caused significant increases (t test p< 0.01) of hydroperoxides (up to 24%), 8-Iso-PGF 23 (up to 69%), carbonylated proteins (up to 76%) and 8-OHdG (up to 16%): hs-CRP increase reached 72% despite the levels were still within the normal range. Any reduction of soluble antioxidants activity in plasma was detected, whereas in urine and saliva a reduction of 45% and 38% respectively was shown. In conclusion, the antioxidant surplus determined by a single antioxidants pool administration seems to protect DNA and proteins from oxidation. On the contrary the shortage of antioxidant intake increases all the markers of OS, particularly those related to lipids and proteins, whereas the DNA seems to be protected more efficiently. The AC in plasma tends to be constant, and the limitation of antioxidants intake is followed by reduction of AC in urine and saliva.

Quality and origin of mountain food products: the new European label as a strategy for sustainable development

Mountain farming provides high-quality food products due to the peculiar characteristics of the raw materials combined with traditional processing conditions. However, these products and their intrinsic characteristics are not clearly recognized by consumers on the market. Nowadays, Protected Designation of Origin(PDO), Protected Geographical Indication(PGI) and Traditional Specialities Guaranteed(TSG) certifications include products originating in mountain areas, even if a large part of mountain foodstuff is not protected by these certifications and foods not made in mountain areas are often labeled as ―mountain food products‖. For this reason, the European Union has set a specific Regulation in 2012 to recognize and protect mountain food and to make the consumers safer about the origin information. The objective of this paper is twofold: firstly, it presents the recent aspects related to European legislation of mountain food product; secondly, it aims at reviewing the main features of nutritional quality and technology of dairy and meat products, as the most widespread mountain food products, and the main protocols used to evaluate the authenticity of these food products. The promotion of mountain food product through a specific label and the use of tracing methods, which are able to verify the authenticity of the origin of these products, may play a pivotal role in increasing the consumer‘s loyalty towards these products and could be a way to boost a sustainable development of these economically marginal rural areas. However, the analytical protocols developed so far(stable isotopes, macro and microelements, radionuclides, spectroscopic, molecular techniques, volatile substances profile, terpenes) are in many cases still at the experimental level due to the extreme variability of the mountain origin of the products to be tested.

Metasurfaces offer a unique playground to tailor the electromagnetic field at subwavelength scale to control polarization,wavefront,and nonlinear *** of the optical response of these structures is challenging due to the nanoscale size of their constitutive elements.A long-sought solution to achieve tunability at the nanoscale is all-optical modulation by exploiting the ultrafast nonlinear response of ***,the nonlinear response of materials is inherently very weak,and,therefore,requires optical excitations with large values of *** show that by properly tuning the equilibrium optical response of a nonlocal metasurface,it is possible to achieve sizable variation of the photoinduced out-ofequilibrium optical response on the picosecond timescale employing fluences smaller than 250μJ∕cm^(2),which is 1 order of magnitude lower than previous studies with comparable reflectivity variations in silicon *** results pave the way to fast devices with large modulation amplitude.

Search for a lighter Higgs boson in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

Following the discovery of the Higgs boson with a mass of approximately 125 GeV at the LHC, many studies have been performed from both the theoretical and experimental viewpoints to search for a new Higgs Boson that is lighter than 125 GeV. We explore the possibility of constraining a lighter neutral scalar Higgs boson hi and a lighter pseudo-scalar Higgs boson al in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model by restricting the next-to-lightest scalar Higgs boson h2 to be the one observed at the LHC after applying the phenomenological constraints and those from experimental measurements. Such lighter particles are not yet completely excluded by the latest results of the search for a lighter Higgs boson in the diphoton decay channel from LHC data. Our results show that some new constraints on the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model could be obtained for a lighter scalar Higgs boson at the LHC if such a search is performed by experimental collaborations and more data. The potentials of discovery for other interesting decay channels of such a lighter neutral scalar or pseudo-scalar particle are also discussed.
