Systematic review of randomised controlled trials:Probiotics for functional constipation

AIM:To systematically evaluate and update evidence on the efficacy and safety of probiotic supplementation for the treatment of constipation. METHODS:The MEDLInE,EMBASE,CInAHL,and Cochrane Library databases were searched in May 2009 for randomised controlled trials(RCTs)performed in paediatric or adult populations related to the study aim. RESULTS:We included five RCTs with a total of 377 subjects(194 in the experimental group and 183 in the control group).The participants were adults (three RCTs,n=266)and children(two RCTs,n= 111)with *** adults,data suggests a favourable effect of treatment with Bifidobacterium lactis Dn-173 010,Lactobacillus casei Shirota,and Escherichia coli nissle 1917 on defecation frequency and stool *** children,*** rhamnosusLcr35,but not *** GG,showed a beneficial effect. COnCLUSIOn:Until more data are available,we believe the use of probiotics for the treatment of constipation condition should be considered investigational.

Restoration of kidney tubular epithelium following sublethal injury sequentially involves partial epithelial–mesenchymal transition(pEMT),proliferation,and further redifferentiation into specialized tubule epithelial cells(TECs).Because the immunosuppressant cyclosporine-A produces pEMT in TECs and inhibits the peptidyl-prolyl isomerase(PPIase)activity of cyclophilin(Cyp)proteins,we hypothesized that cyclophilins could regulate TEC *** we demonstrate that in cultured TECs,CypA silencing triggers loss of epithelial features and enhances transforming growth factorβ(TGFβ)-induced EMT in association with upregulation of epithelial repressors Slug and *** pro-epithelial action of CypA relies on its PPIase *** contrast,CypB emerges as an epithelial repressor,because CypB silencing promotes epithelial differentiation,prevents TGFβ-induced EMT,and induces tubular structures in 3D *** addition,in the kidneys of CypB knockout mice subjected to unilateral ureteral obstruction,inflammatory and pro-fibrotic events were *** silencing/knockout leads to Slug,but not Snail,*** support of Slug expression depends on its endoplasmic reticulum location,where it interacts with calreticulin,a calcium-buffering chaperone related to Slug *** CypB silencing reduces ionomycin-induced calcium release and Slug upregulation,we suggest that Slug expression may rely on CypB modulation of calreticulin-dependent calcium *** conclusion,this work uncovers new roles for CypA and CypB in modulating TEC plasticity and identifies CypB as a druggable target potentially relevant in promoting kidney repair.

We construct a Landau-Ginzburg thermodynamic potential,and the corresponding phase diagram for pristine and slightly doped bismuth ferrite,a ferroelectric antiferromagnet at room *** potential is developed based on new X-ray and neutron diffraction experiments complementing available *** demonstrate that a strong biquadratic antiferrodistortive-type coupling is the key to a quantitative description of Bi_(1−x)La_(x)FeO_(3) multiferroic phase diagram including the temperature stability of the antiferromagnetic,ferroelectric,and antiferrodistortive phases,as well as for the prediction of novel intermediate structural ***,we show that“rotomagnetic”antiferrodistortive-antiferromagnetic coupling is very important to describe the ferroelectric polarization and antiferrodistortive tilt behavior in the R3c phase of BiFeO_(3).The Landau-Ginzburg thermodynamic potential is able to describe the sequence of serial and trigger-type phase transitions,the temperature-dependent behavior of the order parameters,and the corresponding susceptibilities to external *** can also be employed to predict the corresponding ferroelectric and antiferrodistortive properties of Bi_(1−x)La_(x)FeO_(3) thin films and nanoparticles by incorporating the gradient and surface energy terms that are strongly dependent on the shape,size,and preparation method.

Formic acid(FA)is a potential biomass resource of syngas with contents of carbon monoxide(CO,60 wt.%)and hydrogen(H_(2),4.4 wt.%).Among the technologies for FA conversion,the photoreforming of FA has received widespread attention due to its use of green solar energy conversion technology and mild reaction ***,a V-W bimetallic solid solution,V_(x)W_(1-x)n_(1.5) with efficient co-catalytic properties was first and facilely *** CdS was used as a photocatalyst,the activity performance of the V_(0.1)W_(0.9)n_(1.5) system was over 60%higher than that of the W_(2)n_(3) *** computational simulations and experiments showed the V_(0.1)W_(0.9)n_(1.5) had great metallic features and large work functions,contributing a faster photo-generated carrier transfer and less recombination,finally facilitating a great performance in cocatalyst for syngas production in photoreforming *** work provides an approach to synthesizing novel transition metal nitrides for photocatalysis.

In child psychiatry, the use of play, a habitual activity in children, is used as a means of communication and therapy. The psychodynamic reading of a sequence of games played by a three-year-old child with dolls, who had been treated for anorexia for a year at the Children’s Guidance Center of Abidjan, shed new light on the child’s problems. The clinical history of M (3 years old) revealed, in addition to the eating disorder, a disturbance in the attachment bond and parental imagos in distress. This doll game, set up as a copy of reality, enabled the therapist to redirect his treatment and work on the mother-child bond.

Dear Editor,The increasing number of men who undergo workup for suspected prostate cancer are subject to severe emotional stress[1].Stress levels seem to be elevated as soon as a suspicion of cancer is raised and the waiting time before a final diagnosis may be equally stressful as the post-diagnostic period[1,2].We recently demonstrated a marked increase in risk for different psychiatric disorders during the six months before prostate cancer diagnosis,highlighting the potential impact of emotional stress experienced while waiting for the diagnosis[3].

Hwabyung is an indigenous psychiatric illness commonly found among Korean women. Using hwabyung, this article describes the psychological ramifications of immigration experiences among Korean immigrant women in the United States. Data collected from an anonymous survey of adult Korean immigrant women （n = 143） were used for a statistical analysis. The findings highlight the significant effects of self-esteem, social support, financial hardship, and family cohesion on the changes in the hwabyung symptoms among Korean immigrant women. Based on the findings, the implications for practice and future study are discussed. Also discussed are the global significance of migrant women and their mental health issues.
