AIm:To compare rifaximin and insulin-like growth factor(IGF)-1 treatment of hyperammonemia and brain edema in cirrhotic rats with portal occlusion.mETHODS:Rats with CCl4-induced cirrhosis with ascites plus portal vein occlusion and controls were randomized into six groups:Cirrhosis;Cirrhosis + IGF-1;Cirrhosis + rifaximin;Controls;Controls + IGF-1;and Controls + rifaximin.An oral glutamine-challenge test was performed,and plasma and cerebral ammonia,glucose,bilirubin,transaminases,endotoxemia,brain water content and ileocecal cultures were measured and liver histology was assessed.RESULTS:Rifaximin treatment significantly reduced bacterial overgrowth and endotoxemia compared with cirrhosis groups,and improved some liver function parameters(bilirubin,alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase).These effects were associated with a significant reduction in cerebral water content.Blood and cerebral ammonia levels,and area-underthe-curve values for oral glutamine-challenge tests were similar in rifaximin-treated cirrhotic rats and control group animals.By contrast,IGF-1 administration failed to improve most alterations observed in cirrhosis.CONCLUSION:By reducing gut bacterial overgrowth,only rifaximin was capable of normalizing plasma and brain ammonia and thereby abolishing low-grade brain edema,alterations associated with hepatic encephalopathy.

Therapy based on androgenic deprivation is one of the standard treatments that many prostate cancer patients receive. moreover, its use is increasing owing to a clear expansion of the indications for this therapy in patients with localized prostate cancer. Despite classically being considered to be well tolerated, androgenic deprivation has adverse effects. Of these, the loss of mineral bone mass is particularly notable and can lead to osteoporosis, as well as an increased risk of bone fracture. Some fractures, such as hip fractures, may have serious consequences. Useful procedures such as bone densitometry can aid in the diagnosis of these conditions. Once diagnosed, decreases in mineral bone mass can be managed by dietary recommendations, general changes in lifestyle or medication. We review the most important randomized controlled trials evaluating different drugs （bisphosphonates, denosumab and toremifene） in the prevention of bone loss and in the reduction in fracture risk in prostate cancer patients treated with androgen-deprivation therapy. Following the applicable recommendations, urologists must carefully monitor the bone health of prostate cancer patients subjected to androgenic deprivation to obtain an early diagnosis and apply the appropriate general and/or therapeutic measures if necessary.

Fires at the Wildland-Urban Interface(WUI)are becoming increasingly hazardous for life safety and property protection.Guidelines and standards for fire practitioners are needed in order to help WUI communities face this threat and become fire-adapted.A performance-based design approach(PBD)is proposed to deal with the complex issues present at the WUI homeowner scale,which entails the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD)tools such as FDS in order to identify vulnerabilities in a quantitative manner.An analysis of recent European WUI fires is presented,along with the definition of several pattern scenarios that can be derived from these.Based on this analysis,examples of PBD fire scenarios specific for the mediterranean WUI microscale are presented,involving glazing systems,roofing and gutters,external structures adjacent to the main building,and gaps present in the building envelope.A worked example to show the implementation of the proposed PBD method is provided in which the fire impact of residential fuel on a glazing system is quantitatively analysed.

We present the first experimental realization of a light spectral filter based on the spatial adiabatic passage technique.We demonstrate that a fully integrable CmOS-compatible system of three coupled identical total internal reflection silicon oxide waveguides with variable separation along their propagation direction can be used simultaneously as a low-and high-pass spectral filter within the visible range of wavelengths.Light is injected into the right waveguide,and after propagating along the system,long wavelengths are transferred into the left output,whereas short wavelengths propagate to the right and central outputs.The stopband reaches values up to 211 dB for the left output and approximately 220 dB for the right plus central outputs.The passband values are close to 0 dB for both cases.We also demonstrate that the filtering characteristics of the device can be controlled by modifying the parameter values,which define the geometry of the triple-waveguide system.However,the general filtering behavior of the system does not critically depend on technological variations.Thus,the spatial adiabatic passage filtering approach constitutes an alternative to other integrated filtering devices,such as interference or absorbance-based filters.

Background: The construction of useful and attainable indicators of fitness assessment deserves special attention in clinical practice. We aimed to construct an indicator of the functional fitness age(FFA) of women aged 50 and older by an equation using fitness outcomes and its correlation with chronological age(CA) and to analyze the external validity of our results by comparing our sample to others.methods: Participants(n=459, age: 70.3 ± 7.9 years, mean ± SD) were evaluated using the Senior Fitness Test battery. We applied a multiple regression and a subsequent Holt's exponential smoothing to analyze the outcomes.Results: We obtained a statistically significant expression of F(6, 452) = 328.384; p ment in women aged 50 and over with regards to CA:FFA = 40.146 + 0.350 X CS(stand)-0.714 X AC(rep)-0.110 X ST(step)-0.177 X CSR(cm)-0.101 X BS(cm) + 8.835 X FUG(s) where CS means chair stand test, AC. means arm curl test, ST means 2-min step test, CSR means chair sit-and-reach test, BS means back scratch test, FUG means 8-foot up-and-go test. We compared this index with percentiles distribution from our sample and from other studies.Conclusion: We suggest the use of FFA as a valid indicator of fitness in adult and senior women as well as a useful motivational tool to undertake exercise programs.

The spectral properties of special matrices have been widely studied, because of their applications. We focus on permutation matrices over a finite field and, more concretely, we compute the minimal annihilating polynomial, and a set of linearly independent eigenvectors from the decomposition in disjoint cycles of the permutation naturally associated to the matrix.

The importance of evaluating the success of policies developed to effectively manage coastal and marine resource use is well documented. However, few frameworks exist that allow for a comparative examination of existing policy instruments, as opposed to specific initiatives, which assess governance performance aimed at addressing issues arising in the coastal zone. This paper describes the process and findings for evaluating the feasibility of a modified Coastal Sustainability Standard (CoSS) framework that seeks to measure the effectiveness of individual planning instruments within overlapping spatial boundaries in the landward and marine areas in the southeast region of Cuba. Through workshops conducted in Santiago de Cuba and Guamá municipalities with key representatives involved in coastal management and planning, the utility of the framework was assessed using the main instruments of territorial planning in Cuba, namely integrated river basin management, territorial planning in coastal municipalities and marine and coastal management. While, the findings suggest that the modified CoSS framework can be used to assess the effectiveness of these planning instruments in the region, and workshop participants also suggested improvements to better match its use to the characteristics of the study region.

Stimulative effect of lactic acid bacteria in the growth of the microalgae Isochrysis galbana

Objective:To study the effect of species of lactic acid bacteria(LAB)from telluric origin on the growth of the microalgae Isochrysis galbana(I.galbana)in small and medium volume flasks.methods:In the first experiment,7 LAB species[Carnobacterium piscicola,Lactobacillus brevis,Lactobacillus casei ssp.casei,Lactobacillus helveticus,Lactococcus lactis spp.lactis,Leuconostoc mesenteroides spp.mesenteroides(L.mesenteroides spp.mesenteroides)and Pediococcus acidilactici(P.acidilactici)]were inoculated in 250 mL flasks containing microalgae I.galbana(10^(6)cells/mL).After fitting the growth data to two mathematical models,two LAB strains(L.mesenteroides spp.mesenteroides and P.acidilactici)were selected for the second experiment in which those strains were inoculated in medium size(5 L)volume cultures of I.galbana(1.2×10^(5)-1.5×10^(5)cells/mL).The bacterial load in cultures from the first experiment was analyzed by plating on marine agar,mRS agar and thiosulfate citrate bile saltssucrose media.Results:All strains of LAB tested enhanced the growth rate and the final biomass yield of I.galbana cultures,even in the absence of nutrients in the media.The best overall results and the maximal final cell densities in small flasks were achieved with strains L.mesenteroides spp.mesenteroides and P.acidilactici,respectively.These two strains also stimulated the growth(40%and 16%with respect to controls)of I.galbana in medium size volumes.For most strains,CFU values of LAB remained stable(10^(5)-10^(8)CFU/mL)for at least 4 days.A high variability was observed in bacteria strains among treatments,with Pseudomonas and moraxella being the most abundant bacteria.Conclusions:The results of present study showed that the growth of I.galbana in both small and medium size volumes was enhanced by LAB,both in the absence and the presence of nutrients in the culture.The highest final biomass was achieved by adding P.acidilactici,whereas Carnobacterium piscicola and L.mesenteroides spp.mesenteroides provided maximal growth rates.The former als

实现矿区可持续发展是我国乃至全球共同面临的难题,而发展矿业旅游是推动矿区转型的重要方法,是破解该难题的重要途径。其中,矿业遗迹保护与合理利用是发展矿业旅游的根本。为此,辨析了矿业遗迹旅游资源概念,提出了矿业遗迹旅游资源分类体系,利用层次分析法构建了矿业遗迹旅游资源评价指标体系,以旅游资源评价为基础提出了恢复型、初级型和深度型3种主要开发模式,并对湖北省主要的矿业遗迹旅游资源评价进行了实证研究。研究表明,湖北省矿业遗迹数量随着评价分值的增高而逐渐减少,呈现"金字塔"形状,开发模式随着分值的增加而更多元化,呈现"倒金字塔"形状。
