The effects of temperature and resource availability on denitrification and relative N_(2)O production in boreal lake sediments

Anthropogenic environmental stressors（like atmospheric deposition,land use change,and climate warming） are predicted to increase inorganic nitrogen and organic carbon loading to northern boreal lakes,with potential consequences for denitrification in ***,our ability to predict effects of these changes is currently limited as northern boreal lakes have been largely neglected in denitrification *** aim of this study was therefore to assess how maximum potential denitrification and N_2O production rates,and the relationship between the two（relative N_2O production）,is controlled by availability of nitrate（NO_3^-）,carbon（C）,phosphorus（P）,and *** were performed using the acetylene inhibition technique on sediments from a small,nutrient poor boreal lake in northern Sweden in *** potential denitrification and N_2O production rates at 4°C were reached already at NO_3^-additions of 106–120 μg NO_3^-–N/L,and remained unchanged with higher NO_3 *** incubation temperatures increased maximum potential denitrification and N_2O production rates,and Q10 was somewhat higher for N_2O production（1.77） than for denitrification（1.69）.The relative N_2O production ranged between 13% and 64%,and was not related to NO_3^-concentration,but the ratio increased when incubations were amended with C and P（from a median of 16% to 27%）.Combined,our results suggests that unproductive northern boreal lakes currently have low potential for denitrification but are susceptible to small changes in NO_3 loading especially if these are accompanied by enhanced C and P availability,likely promoting higher N_2O production relative to N_2.

The Current State of Kidney Transplantation in Kenya: Challenges, Opportunities, and Future Directions

Kenya, a lower-middle-income country in East Africa, faces a rising burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD), with an estimated 12,500 individuals suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Renal transplantation—the preferred treatment option for ESRD, remains underutilized. Since the first transplant in 1978, seven centers have been established, with 829 transplants performed by 2022. Living-related renal transplants (LRRT) dominate, while deceased donor renal transplantation (DDRT) is yet to be implemented. Recent data show improved outcomes, with one-year graft survival rates up to 96%, but challenges such as acute rejection rates (32.8%) and limited donor outcome data persist. Barriers include high costs, limited insurance coverage, inadequate laboratory infrastructure, and a transplant workforce shortage. Efforts to establish DDRT programs are underway but are hampered by the absence of organ procurement systems and insufficient laboratory capabilities. Future priorities include reducing costs and expanded insurance coverage for transplant care. Investments in laboratory infrastructure, local tissue typing, and surgical training are essential. Strengthening international collaborations and public education campaigns can improve donor pools and transplantation access. Strategic policy reforms and resource allocation are vital to scaling up Kenya’s kidney transplant program and addressing the unmet needs of its ESRD population.

To accelerate the development of ion conducting materials,we present a general graph-theoretic analysis framework for ion migration in any crystalline *** nodes of the graph represent metastable sites of the migrating ion and the edges represent discrete migration events between adjacent *** from a collection of possible metastable migration sites,the framework assigns a weight to the edges by calculating the individual migration energy barriers between those *** pathways in the periodic simulation cell corresponding to macroscopic ion migration are identified by searching for the lowest-cost cycle in the periodic migration *** exemplify the utility of the framework,we present the automatic analyses of Li migration in different polymorphs of VO(PO_(4)),with the resulting identification of two distinct crystal structures with simple migration pathways demonstrating overall<300 meV migration barriers.

Effect of particle stress tensor in simulations of dense gas-particle flows in fluidized beds

A two-fluid model based on the kinetic theory of granular flow for the rapid-flow regime and the Coulomb friction law for the quasi-static regime is applied to predict the hydrodynamics of dense gas-particle flow in a three-dimensional fluidized bed. Two different models for the particle stress tensor that use different constitutive equations in the elastic-inertial regime are examined to assess their ability to predict bed dynamics. To understand how particle stress models affect structural features of the flow, a quantitative analysis is performed on some important aspects of the mechanics of bubbling beds that have received relatively little attention in the literature. Accordingly, different flow regimes are identified in the context of fluidized beds through the dimensionless inertial number, and the main characteristics of each regime are discussed. In addition, how the particle stress tensor manifests itself in the bubble characteristics, natural frequency of the bed, and particle Reynolds stress are investigated, all of which help to better understand the complex dynamics of the fluidized bed. The numerical results are validated against pub- lished experimental data and demonstrate the significant role of the stress tensor in the elastic-inertial regime.

Holistic Acupuncture approach to idiopathic refractory nausea,abdominal pain and bloating

AIM： To evaluate the effectiveness of a holistic acupuncture approach on nausea, pain, bloating and electrogastrogram （EGG） parameters in patients with intractable symptoms.METHODS： Twelve patients with no or mild nausea （those without nausea had bloating or pain） and 10 with a histool of moderate to severe nausea were referred for acupuncture. All underwent an EGG and were treated at acupuncture points PC6, SP4 and DU20. Visual analog scales （VAS） assessing severity of nausea, pain and bloating were obtained before and after acupuncture treatment. Nineteen patients received three and three patients received two treatments.RESULTS： VAS scores for nausea reflected the clinical assessment and differed significantly between mild and moderate/severe nausea groups. Acupuncture significantly improved severity of nausea in both groups with improved pre-treatment nausea between the first and third treatments in the moderate/severe nausea group. Pain scores improved with acupuncture in the mild nausea group only and bloating improved only with the first treatment in this group. Patients with bloating with VAS scores greater than 35 pre-treatment improved with acupuncture and over all VAS scores for pain improved with treatment. Acupuncture increased the power in the 2.7 to 3.5 cpm range in the EGG.CONCLUSION： In this uncontrolled clinical study, a holistic acupuncture approach significantly improved nausea in patients with refractory symptoms and increased the power in the 2,7-3,5 cpm component of the electrogastrogram, Bloating and pain VAS scores improved acutely with treatment, This study suggests that acupuncture may be effective in this refractory group of patients and further study using appropriate controls is warranted,
