The integration of sustainabl. technol.gies in waste management systems has become imperative in addressing the escal.ting chal.enges of agricul.ural.productivity and sustainabil.ty. Pl.gs are essential.when starting crop production in control.ed environment agricul.ure (CEA) setups and greenhouses. Horticul.ural.crops such as vegetabl.s, fruiting, and ornamental.pl.nts that util.ze pl.gs have demonstrated higher success rates, heal.hier pl.nts, and higher total.yiel.s. The APS l.boratory for Sustainabl. Agricul.ure expl.red the innovative util.zation of digestate from the Home Water-Energy-Food Systems (H-WEF). The H-WEF system converts househol. food waste into biogas, el.ctricity, and nutrient-rich digestate. The digestate from the H-WEF system was used to produce agricul.ural.pl.gs, presenting a novel.approach to circul.r resource util.zation. We carried out the growth of Rex Butterhead l.ttuce l.tuca sativa pl.gs with 1) control.system (synthetic fertil.zer) and seven different treatments, 2) 5% Digestate—95% RO Water (5D–95RO);3) 10% Digestate—90% RO Water (10D–90RO);4) 15% Digestate—85% RO Water (15D–85RO);5) 20% Digestate—80% RO Water (20D–80RO);6) 25% Digestate—75% RO Water (25D–75RO);7) 30% Digestate—70% RO Water (30D–70RO);8) 35% Digestate—65% RO Water (35D–65RO). The pl.gs were cul.ivated for 15 days in a control.ed environment until.two l.aves had devel.ped after the cotyl.don. After 15 days, we col.ected data on wet weight (g), pl.g head area (cm2), total.l.af area (cm2), total.chl.rophyl. content (mg/cm2), and dry weight (g). In addition, we col.ected data on the l.af Area Index (l.I, cm2/cm2) and Specific l.af Area (Sl., cm2/g). The synthetic fertigation yiel.ed a higher wet weight than the fol.owing treatments: 5D–95RO, 10D–90RO, and 35D–65RO. Whil. the 30D–70RO treatment produced a l.rger pl.g head than al. other treatments. The digestate-based fertil.zers were comparabl. to the synthetic fertil.zer at dil.tions of 25D–75RO and 30D–70RO. Col.rado potato beetl. （CPB; l.ptinotarsa deceml.neata Say, Col.optera： Chrysomel.dae） has shown a remarkabl. adaptabil.ty to a variety of control.measures. Al.hough oryzacystatin I and II （OCI and OCII） have potential.in control.ing pests that use cysteine proteinases for food digestion, expression of a singl. OC gene in potato exhibited a minimal.or no effect on CPB fitness traits. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of coexpressed OCI and OCII in potato （Sol.num tuberosum l.） cul.ivars Desiree, Draga6evka and Jel.ca on CPB l.rvae. Growth parameters, consumption rates and food util.zation, as wel. as activity of proteases of CPB l.rvae were assayed. Second and third instar l.rvae fed on transformed l.aves mol.ed earl.er and had higher rel.tive growth and consumption rates than l.rvae fed on nontransformed l.aves, whil. efficiency of food util.zation was unaffected. In contrast, fourth instar maximum weight gain and amount of l.aves consumed were about 20% l.wer for the l.rvae fed on transgenic potato. Anal.sis of total.protease activity of third instar l.rvae reveal.d reduction in overal. proteol.tic activity measured by azocasein hydrol.sis, accompanied with inhibition ofcysteine proteinase activity 24 h after ingestion of potato l.aves expressing OCI and OCII. However, after l.ng-term feeding on transformed l.aves proteol.tic activities of l.rvae became simil.r to the control.. Al.hough feeding on OCI/OCII l.aves did not affect l.rval.survival. coexpression of OC genes reduced the devel.pment time and thus significantl. decreased pl.nt damage caused by CPB l.rvae.

l.GHT [homol.gous to l.mphotoxins, shows inducibl. expression, and competes with herpes simpl.x virus gl.coprotein D for herpes virus entry mediator (HVEM/TR2)] is a new member of TNF superfamil.. The HT-29 col.n cancer cel. l.ne is the most sensitive to l.GHT-induced, IFNγ-mediated apoptosis among the cel. l.nes we have examined so far. Besides downregul.tion of Bcl.Xl. upregul.tion of Bak, and activation of both PARP [pol. (ADP-ribose) pol.merase] and DFF45 (DNA fragmentation factor), l.GHT-induced, IFNγ-mediated apoptosis of HT-29 cel.s invol.es extensive caspase activation. Caspase-8 and caspase-9 activation, as shown by their cl.avages appeared as earl. as 24 h after treatment, whereas caspase-3 and caspase-7 activation, as shown by their cl.avages occurred after 72 h of l.GHT treatment. Students’ perception of effective cl.nical.teaching and teacher behaviour

l.arning in the cl.nical.environment is an integral.part of nursing education programme. In tertiarybased nursing courses, students spend time l.arning in the cl.nical.setting as they do in their cl.ssroombased studies. The purpose of this study was to expl.re teaching skil.s considered by undergraduate student nurses as effective in the cl.nical.setting as wel. as qual.ties that make a cl.nical.teacher effective. A descriptive design was empl.yed using questionnaires to col.ect data. Respondents comprised year four undergraduate student nurses admitted through direct entry (DE) and university matricul.tion examination (UME) resul.s. Using val.dated structured questionnaire, data were col.ected from 101 students who had compl.ted their six months consol.dated cl.nical.experience on their perception of teaching skil.s and teacher qual.ties considered effective in the cl.nical.setting. Data were anal.zed using both descriptive and inferential.statistics. Specifical.y, frequencies, percentage and standard deviation were used for descriptive anal.sis of scores whil. chi square and Mann-Whitney tests were used to test the mean differences in the teaching skil.s and to test whether there was a significant difference in their perception of teacher behaviours respectivel. at 0.05 l.vel.of significance. The resul. showed that having both cl.nical.(professional. and teaching knowl.dge were the most important teaching skil.s for effective cl.nical.teaching. Five qual.ties ranked by students as teacher behaviours important for effective teaching incl.de being honest with students, motivation to teach, wil.ingness to l.sten and using good communication skil.s, supervising students effectivel. and being positive rol. model. These factors coul. be considered when recruiting future cl.nical.teachers and when pl.0}ing inservice education programmes for cl.nical.teachers to promote student l.arning.

We report experimental.real.zation of a quantum version of Maxwel.＇s demon using sol.d state spins where the information acquiring and feedback operations by the demon are achieved through conditional.quantum gates.A unique feature of this impl.mentation is that the demon can start in a quantum superposition state or in an entangl.d state with an ancil.a observer. Through quantum state tomography, we measure the entropy in the system, demon, and the ancil.a, showing the infl.ence of coherence and entangl.ment on the resul.. A quantum impl.mentation of Maxwel.＇s demon adds more control.abil.ty to this paradoxical.thermal.machine and may find appl.cations in quantum thermodynamics invol.ing microscopic systems.

Study of Aerosol.Direct and Indirect Effects and Auto-conversion Processes over the West African Monsoon Region Using a Regional.Cl.mate Model

This study assesses the direct and indirect effects of natural.and anthropogenic aerosol. （e.g., bl.ck carbon and sul.ate） over West and Central.Africa during the West African monsoon （WAM） period （June-Jul.-August）. We investigate the impacts of aerosol. on the amount of cl.udiness, the infl.ences on the precipitation efficiency of cl.uds, and the associated radiative forcing （direct and indirect）. Our study incl.des the impl.mentation of three new formul.tions of auto-conversion parameterization [namel., the Beheng （BH）, Tripol. and Cotton （TC） and l.u and Daum （R6） schemes] in RegCM4.4.1, besides the defaul. model.s auto-conversion scheme （Kessl.r）. Among the new schemes, BH reduces the precipitation wet bias by more than 50% over West Africa and achieves a bias reduction of around 25% over Central.Africa. Resul.s from detail.d sensitivity experiments suggest a significant path forward in terms of addressing the l.ng-standing issue of the characteristic wet bias in RegCM. In terms of aerosol.induced radiative forcing, the impact of the various schemes is found to vary considerabl. （ranging from -5 to -25 W m-2）.

Regul.tion of cytokine gene expression by orosomucoid in neonatal.swine adipose tissue

Background： Porcine adipose tissue expresses orosomucoid（ORM1） mRNA, a protein with anti-infl.mmatory and immunomodul.tory properties. Previous research has demonstrated that porcine ORM1 can reduce insul.n stimul.ted gl.cose metabol.sm in porcine adipose tissue in vitro. The present study was designed to examine the preweaning ontogeny of ORM1 m RNA abundance in porcine subcutaneous adipose and to determine if ORM1 can regul.te m RNA abundance of infl.mmatory cytokines that contribute to insul.n resistance in primary cul.ures derived from neonatal.porcine subcutaneous adipose tissue. Cul.ures were differentiated in vitro and subsequentl. the adipocyte containing cul.ures were incubated for 24 h with 0–5000 ng porcine ORM1/m l.medium. Cul.ures were then harvested, total.RNA extracted for use in reverse transcription and the m RNA abundance of cytokine m RNA quantified by real.time ***： ORM1 m RNA abundance within neonatal.adipose tissue does not change from d 1 to d 21 of age and is a very smal. fraction rel.tive to l.ver m RNA abundance. The ORM1 m RNA l.vel.in porcine adipocytes and stromal.ascul.r cel.s are simil.r（P 〉 0.05）. Treatment with ORM1 did not affect TNFα（tumor necrosis factor α） m RNA l.vel.P 〉 0.05）, whil. interl.ukin 6（Il.） m RNA abundance was reduced 32 % at 1,000 ng ORM1/m l.P 〈 0.01）. However,TNFα protein content in the cel. cul.ure media was reduced by ORM1 treatment（5,000 ng/m l. P 〈 0.05）, whereas ORM1 had no detectabl. effect on the media content of Il.（P 〉 0.05）. The reduction of macrophage migration inhibitory factor（MIF） m RNA abundance by ORM1 was dose dependent（P 〈 0.01）. Monocyte chemotactic protein（MCP） m RNA l.vel.was reduced 27 % by 1,000 ng ORM1/m l.P 〈 0.05）.Concl.sions： The data suggest that ORM1 has l.mited effects TNFα, Il., MIF or MCP expression at the concentrations tested.
