Schistosoma mansoni proteins attenuate gastrointestinal motility disturbances during experimental colitis in mice

AIM:To investigate the therapeutic effect of Schistosoma mansoni(***) soluble worm proteins on gastrointestinal motility disturbances during experimental colitis in mice. METHODS:Colitis was induced by intrarectal injection of trinitrobenzene sulphate(TNBS) and 6 h later,mice were treated ip with *** *** were performed 5 d after TNBS *** quantified using validated inflammation parameters. Gastric emptying and geometric center were measured to assess in vivo gastrointestinal *** activity of distal colonic segments was studied in vitro using a modified Trendelenburg *** profiles of T-lymphocytes isolated from the colon were determined by real time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS:Intracolonic injection of TNBS caused severe *** with *** proteins significantly ameliorated colonic inflammation after 5 *** did not affect gastric emptying but significantly decreased the geometric center and impaired colonic peristaltic activity 5 d after the induction of *** with *** proteins ameliorated these in vivo and in vitro motility *** addition,TNBS injection caused a downregulation of effector T cell cytokines after 5 d,whereas a *** protein effect was no longer observed at this time point. CONCLUSION:Treatment with *** proteins attenuated intestinal inflammation and ameliorated motility disturbances during murine experimental colitis.

Fatigue in children and adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease

AIM To identify factors other than active disease and anemia that contribute to fatigue in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease(IBD).METHODS We performed an electronic search in Medline and EMBASE from their inception to May 2017 using the search term "fatigue" or the related keywords "physical impairment" and "inflammatory bowel disease" with the filter "child"(age 0-18 years). Cross-sectional and case-control studies were included. We restricted our search to studies published in English. We used the PRISMA checklist and flow diagram. Duplicate articles were manually deleted in End Note. To identify further relevant studies, we checked the reference lists of the selected *** We identified 149 papers, of which 19 were retrieved for full text review. Eleven studies were subsequently excluded because fatigue was not evaluated as an outcome measure. Eight papers focused on the desired topic and were discussed in the final analysis. A lack of uniformity of outcome measures made the pooling of data impossible. In all but one study, questionnaires were used to evaluate fatigue. In the remaining study, an accelerometer was used to measure daily activities, sleeping time and their relationships with fatigue in a more quantifiable manner. Adolescents with IBD are significantly more fatigued than healthy controls. In addition to active disease, increased anxiety or depression and disturbed family relationships were frequently reported predictors of fatigue. Quantitative measurement of physical activity in patients with Crohn's disease showed a reduction in the number of steps per day, and patients with ulcerative colitis had a shorter duration of physical activity during the *** Fatigue in pediatric IBD is related to a combination of biological, functional and behavioral factors, which should all be taken into account when managing fatigue.

Photobiomodulation:a novel approach to promote trans-differentiation of adipose-derived stem cells into neuronal-like cells

Indian plate paleogeography, subduction and horizontal underthrusting below Tibet: paradoxes, controversies and opportunities

The India–Asia collision zone is the archetype to calibrate geological responses to continent–continent collision, but hosts a paradox: there is no orogen-wide geological record of oceanic subduction after initial collision around 60–55 Ma, yet thousands of kilometers of post-collisional subduction occurred before the arrival of unsubductable continental lithosphere that currently horizontally underlies Tibet. Kinematically restoring incipient horizontal underthrusting accurately predicts geologically estimated diachronous slab break-off, unlocking the Miocene of Himalaya–Tibet as a natural laboratory for unsubductable lithosphere convergence. Additionally, three endmember paleogeographic scenarios exist with different predictions for the nature of post-collisional subducted lithosphere but each is defended and challenged based on similar data types. This paper attempts at breaking through this impasse by identifying how the three paleogeographic scenarios each challenge paradigms in geodynamics, orogenesis, magmatism or paleogeographic reconstruction and identify opportunities for methodological advances in paleomagnetism, sediment provenance analysis, and seismology to conclusively constrain Greater Indian paleogeography.

Characterization of Interface Strength as Function of Temperature and Moisture Conditions

Since Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL) tests are part of the international reliability qualification standards, all the microelectronics components/products have to pass these specifications. Therefore, it is important to be able to efficiently and accurately characterize and predict the moisture related material and interface behavior in the real manufacturing, processing, testing and application conditions. The success of interfacial fracture mechanics approach to analyze moisture-induced failures in IC packaging strongly depend on accurate characterization of the critical adhesion strength, Gc. However, its measurement is complicated by the fact that adhesion depends not only on moisture concentration, C, but also temperature, T, and mode mixity, ψ. This paper described our research to develop a reliable methodology for interface toughness evaluation as function of temperature, humidity and mode mixity. Our methodology includes using the four-point bending test and shaft-loaded-blister method. Dedicated specimens consisting of various types of moulding compounds bonded onto leadframe are manufactured. Besides temperature, moisture content and mode mixity effects, also the influences of surface treatment (leadframe oxidation and contamination) and production process on the interface fracture toughness are evaluated. Multi-physics-based numerical methods are used to transfer the experimental critical loads to an interface strength parameter. These analysis covers mechanical, moisture diffusion, vapor pressure, hygro-swelling and CTE-mismatch modeling. To test and improve the methodology, various effects are evaluated, such as crack-length dependency, material properties, specimen- width, displacement-rate of the upper support/shaft, etc. The results of the proposed methodology indicate, as expected, a change in interface toughness by mode mixity, moisture content and temperature. No evidence for a genetic association between female mating preference and male secondary sexual trait in a Lake Victoria cichlid fish

Sexual selection by female mating preference for male nuptial coloration has been suggested as a driving force in the rapid speciation of Lake Victoria cichlid fish. This process could have been facilitated or accelerated by genetic associations between female preference loci and male coloration loci. Preferences, as well as coloration, are heritable traits and are probably determined by more than one gene. However, little is known about potential genetic associations between these traits. In turbid water, we found a population that is variable in male nuptial coloration from blue to yellow to red. Males at the extreme ends of the phenotype distribution resemble a reproductively isolated species pair in clear water that has diverged into one species with blue-grey males and one species with bright red males. Females of the turbid water population vary in mating preference coinciding with the male phenotype distribution. For the current study, these females were mated to blue males. We measured the coloration of the sires and male offspring. Parents-offspring regression showed that the sires did not affect male offspring coloration, which confirms earlier findings that the blue species breeds true. In contrast, male offspring coloration was determined by the identity of the dams, which suggests that there is heritable variation in male color genes between females. However, we found that mating preferences of the dams were not correlated with male offspring coloration. Thus, there is no evidence for strong genetic linkage between mating preference and the preferred trait in this population [Current Zoology 56 （1）： 57-64 2010].

Cost projections for microwave plasma CO production using renewable energy

Successful deployment of renewable fuel production requires substantial cost reduction along the entire value chain of the underlying manufacturing *** improve their performance,renewable fuel production technologies should follow a cost-reducing learning *** this article,we adopt recent evidence that learning-by-doing is directly influenced by the technology unit size and explore three scenarios for microwave plasma CO_(2)conversion in which the learning rate varies between 10%,15%,and 20%.Our projections reveal that the total investments required to deploy this CO_(2)conversion technology at an exajoule scale decline from 83 down to 23 billion euros under a 10%increase in the value of the learning *** CO_(2) production costs in 2050 amount to 247–346€(2019)/t CO_(2),in which the range is determined by the value of the learning *** under substantial learning until 2050 the levelized CO production cost is unlikely to become competitive with conventional natural gas-based CO_(2) production processes,except when a CO_(2)tax is applied of up to 150€(2019)/t CO_(2).To optimally exploit effects of learning-by-doing,we recommend developing several CO production technologies simultaneously with multiple unit sizes,so as to improve the chance of ultimately selecting the process with the highest learning rate.

The Vérard et al.(2015) method for 3D palaeogeographic reconstructions:How solid is its base?

Verard and co-workers proposed in an earlier issue of this journal a method to reconstruct the 3D palaeogeography ＂anywhere in the world at any time＂. The present contribution is a discussion of some of the assumptions on which the method of Verard et al. is based. The reason for this discussion is that the method will give, at least seemingly, illogical outcomes for numerous situations. Moreover, some assumptions used by Verard and his team pose theoretical probtems. It is deduced that the method developed by Verard and co-workers may occasionally help, indeed, to obtain a rough picture of the altitude of the sedimentary surface on the continents and of the depth of the sedimentary surface in the oceans in the geological past. The outcomes should, however, be treated with utmost care as severat of the assumptions on which the interpretative 3D method is based have no solid basis, so that even the rough outcomes of the method must be considered questionable.

Oil quenched malleable iron,the strength of an old material in a “green cast” development and a new future

Malleable iron lost the interest and the development stopped in the turbulent seventies of tremendous developments of new technologies. The personal computer, emission spectrometer, thermal analysis, cold-box core system and automatic vertical moulding were introduced into the foundry industry. Experience shows that these new technologies do not always match up with malleable iron. Solidifciation and mould filling simulation programs are not always capable to handle a low carbon equivalent iron like malleable iron. Recent developments show however by using these new technologies and combined with practical experience, it is possible to increase the casting yield of malleable iron to the same level as ductile iron. The mechanical properties, especially the yield strength of malleable iron according to the standard are equivalent to those of ductile iron, however the yield strength of oil quenched malleable iron is signifciantly higher than that of ductile iron. An extensive investigation is made between ductile iron, air quenched and oil quenched malleable irons based on the properties of more than 350 test bars produced under the same conditions. The results are compared with the existing international standards and discussed. Other properties like fatigue strength and response to surface treatments as induction hardening are also discussed. The costs of malleable iron are reviewed and compared with other ferro alloys. These recent developments in increasing the casting yield, the understanding of the strength, makes malleable iron competitive with ductile iron and cheaper than the first grade of ausferritic ductile iron, or steel qualities. It is possible to design lighter and save weight which is essential in the automotive industry. An example of "green cast" development for typical applications, used in automotive transmissions and engines are shown.
