AIM:To elucidate the changes of different ganglion cell layer(GCL)thinning patterns between the optic neuritis(ON)and non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy(NAION).METHODS:A prospective,observational study was conducted to evaluate the timing of GCL changes between acute ON and NAION using optical coherence ***:Thinning on optical coherence tomography in the NAION group occurs as early as 11 d after symptomatic onset of vision loss and follows an altitudinal *** mean superior-inferior GCL thickness difference in the NAION cohort was clinically significant at 5.7μm in the NAION cohort compared to controls of 0.8μm(P=0.032),but not significant in the ON group compared to controls with both groups measuring 1.1μ*** thinning was significant for the ON group compared to controls at 7.2μm(P=0.011)but not the NAION group compared to controls at 1.35μ***:These findings suggest that future treatments for NAION should be given early,and possibly before 11 d in order to prevent GCL and irreversible vision loss.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the most common primary liver tumor and has been considered a very immunogenic *** treatment with radiofrequency ablation(RFA)has been established as the standard ablative therapy for early HCC,and is currently recognized as the main ablative tool for HCC tumors<5 cm in size;however,progression and local recurrence remain the main disadvantages of this *** solve this clinical problem,recent efforts were concentrated on multimodal treatment,combining different strategies,including the combination of RFA and *** article reviewed the combination treatment of RFA with immunotherapy and found that this treatment strategy leads to an increased response of anti-tumor T cells,significantly reduces the risk of recurrence and improves survival rates compared to RFA *** review highlighted scientific evidence that supports the current recommendations for pre-clinical studies,and discuss the need for further research on this topic.

Nanocrystalline NiFe2O4 spinel ferrites were synthesized by sol-gel method. The structural and magnetic properties were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM). Annealing temperature showed prominent effect on the grain size. The average grain size of NiFe2O4 was observed to increase from 31 nm to 54 nm as the annealing increased from 500℃ to 1000℃. The IR spectra showed the absorption bands corresponding to stretching of tetrahedral and octahedral bands. The magnetic properties were observed to depend strongly on the annealing temperature.

Clinical Significance of Liver Function Abnormality in Patients with COVID-19:A Single-center Experience from Western India

Background and Aims:The impact of coronavirus disease-2019(COVID-19)on liver function remains to be fully *** study was designed to investigate such and determine the clinical significance in determining mortality ***:A retrospective study was conducted in patients with COVID-19 from March 2020 to July *** details were retrieved from electronic medical records to obtain clinical characteristics,medical history,laboratory tests,therapeutic intervention,and outcome ***:A total of 184 patients with COVID-19 were included(median age:45.5 years),comprised of 62.5%*** total,22(12.0%)patients had severe infection and 162(88.0%)had mild to moderate ***,95(51.6%)showed abnormal liver function test(LFT)and 17(9.2%)showed normal LFT at *** median age,hospital stay,and LFT were significantly higher in severe ***-severe infection(p<0.001).Out of 12 deaths,the majority were due to severe infection(n=11).Deaths were also due to acute respiratory distress syndrome(n=5),cardiac reasons(n=3),and sepsis with multiorgan failure(n=3).The median age,hospital stay and number of intensive care unit admissions were higher in patients having abnormal LFT compared to normal *** of elevated aspartate aminotransferase(42.8%and 40.4%),alanine transaminase(43.7%and 41.6%),and hypoalbuminemia(71.4%and72.7%)at admission and discharge were more common in severe *** mean survival was significantly lower in severe infection compared to those with non-severe disease(17.2 vs.52.3 days;p<0.001).Conclusions:Incidence of abnormal liver function was higher in patients with severe COVID-19 and was associated with prolonged hospital stay;mortality was associated with severity of *** ruling out the risk of liver injury,it is crucial to vigilantly monitor the liver function parameters in patients with COVID-19 admitted to hospital.

The use of the optoelectronic properties of noble metal nanoparticles has given a new dimension to the realm of cancer diagnosis and therapy(theranostics).The multifunctional catalytic properties and surface plasmon resonance of noble metal nanoparticles(NPs)along with their facile surface chemistry gives them an edge in the field of biology,including for immunotherapeutic *** a previous study,we reported the anticancer efficacy of silver NPs coated with murine serum albumin against fibrosarcoma in an in vivo mouse model,highlighting their role in eliciting oxystress and immune *** addition to addressing the bioavailability and toxicity parameters,our study reported that there was a significant reduction in the size,as well as a delay in the incidence of tumors with AgNP-MSA *** electron micrographs revealed AgNP-MSA uptake by sentinel immune cells associated with the tumor along with the downregulation of pro-tumorigenic inflammatory cytokines,such as TNF-α,IL-6 and IL-1β.

The study evaluated the feasibility of using microwave enhanced hot air heating system for simultaneous dry blanching and dehydration of mushroom slices. The technology involves application of microwave energy at the beginning of dehydration process to inactivate enzymes as well as to remove a certain amount of moisture at the same time and then followed by hot air drying to complete the process. The study investigated effects of different processing parameters, i.e., microwave power level and exposure time on dehydration and quality characteristics of mushroom slices. Mushroom slices were pretreated with different microwave power levels of 240, 360 and 480 W for 1, 3 and 5 min before the hot air-drying. The optimum range of the microwave power level and pretreatment time was found to be 360 W, 3 min and 360 W, 1 min in obtaining the maximum and minimum levels of response parameters.

Our prospective study conducted over a period of 9 months includes 100 samples of ear discharge collected from 90 patients suffering from tubo-tympanic type of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). The ear discharge which is collected with sterile swabs is subjected to Gram’s staining and culture of the causative organism. Antibiotic sensitivity test of cultured bacterial growth is undertaken to know the susceptibility of the causative organism. Of the 100 samples, 62 were culture positive where Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most common pathogen followed by Staphylococcus aureus. Most of the cultured organisms in our study were sensitive to drug Ciprofloxacin. The outcome of our study enabled us to set an empirical medical treatment for an early resolution of ear discharge and inflammation in our patients with CSOM as we could understand the aetiological pathogens and their susceptibility pattern. Effective medical treatment in obtaining a discharge free ear prior to surgical treatment led us to improve the surgical outcome in our patients with CSOM.

Hepatitis B remains a significant global health challenge,contributing to substantial morbidity and *** 254 million people world-wide live with Chronic hepatitis B(CHB),with the majority of cases occurring in sub-Saharan Africa and the Western Pacific ***,only about 13.4%of the individuals infected with this disease have been diagnosed,and awareness of hepatitis B virus(HBV)infection status is as low as 1%in sub-Saharan *** 2022,CHB led to 1.1 million deaths *** World Health Organization(WHO)has set a target of eliminating hepatitis B as a public health concern by 2030;however,this goal appears increasingly unattainable due to multiple *** challenges include low vaccination coverage;a large number of undiagnosed cases;a low proportion of patients eligible for treatment under current guidelines;limited access to healthcare;and the costs associated with lifelong *** of HBV can yield significant clinical benefits within a long window of ***,the benefits of therapy are markedly diminished when the disease is detected at the advanced cirrhosis *** editorial aim to highlight the current challenges in hepatitis care and the necessary steps to achieve the WHO's hepatitis elimination goals for 2030.

An approach based on fuzzy logic for matching both articulated and non-articulated objects across multiple non-overlapping field of views (FoVs) from multiple cameras is proposed. We call it fuzzy logic matching algorithm (FLMA). The approach uses the information of object motion, shape and camera topology for matching objects across camera views. The motion and shape information of targets are obtained by tracking them using a combination of ConDensation and CAMShift tracking algorithms. The information of camera topology is obtained and used by calculating the projective transformation of each view with the common ground plane. The algorithm is suitable for tracking non-rigid objects with both linear and non-linear motion. We show videos of tracking objects across multiple cameras based on FLMA. From our experiments, the system is able to correctly match the targets across views with a high accuracy.
