Cystic lesions of peripheral nerves:Are we missing the diagnosis of the intraneural ganglion cyst?

AIM To highlight the salient magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) features of the intraneural ganglion cyst(INGC) of various peripheral nerves for their precise diagnosis and to differentiate them from other intra and extraneural cystic *** A retrospective analysis of the magnetic resonance(MR) images of a cohort of 245 patients presenting with nerve palsy involving different peripheral nerves was *** images were analyzed for the presence of a nerve lesion,and if found,it was further characterized as solid or *** serial axial,coronal and sagittal MR images of the lesions diagnosed as INGC were studied for their pattern and the anatomical extent along the course of the affected nerve and its *** relation to identifiable anatomical landmarks,intraarticular communication and presence of denervation changes in the muscles supplied by involved nerve was also *** A total of 45 cystic lesions in the intra or extraneurallocations of the nerves were identified from the 245 MR scans done for patients presenting with nerve *** of these 45 cystic lesions,13 were diagnosed to have INGC of a peripheral nerve on *** other cystic lesions included extraneural ganglion cyst,paralabral cyst impinging upon the suprascapular nerve,cystic schwannoma and nerve abscesses related to Hansen's disease involving various peripheral *** lesions of INGC were identified in 12 *** of these affected the common peroneal nerve with one patient having a bilateral *** lesions each were noted in the tibial and suprascapular nerves,and one each in the obturator and proximal sciatic *** intra-articular connection along the articular branch was demonstrated in 12 out of 13 *** stages of denervation atrophy of the supplied muscles of the affected nerves were seen in 7 *** of these 13 lesions in 12 patients,6 underwent *** INGC is an important cause of reversible mono-neuropathy if diagnos

Blood conservation pediatric cardiac surgery in all ages and complexity levels

AIM To demonstrate the feasibility of blood conservation methods and practice across all ages and risk categories in congenital cardiac *** We retrospectively analyzed a collected database of 356 patients who underwent cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass(CPB) from 2010-2015. The patients were grouped into blood conservation(n = 138) and nonconservation(n = 218) groups and sub-grouped based on their ages and procedural complexity scores. RESULTS There were no statistical differences in gender,weight,pre-operative and pre-CPB hematocrit levels in both groups. Despite equivalent hematocrit levels during and after CPB for both groups,there was significantly less operative homologous blood utilized in blood conservation group across all ages and complexity levels. CONCLUSION Blood conservation surgery can be performed in con-genital patients needing cardiac surgery in all age groups and complexity categories. The above findings in addition to attendant risks and side effects of blood transfusion and the rising cost of safer blood products justify blood conservation in congenital cardiac surgery.

Factors Associated with Poor Sleep Quality among Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients on Insulin Therapy

The aim of this study is to investigate the possible risk factors of poor sleep quality among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus on insulin therapy. The factors considered were age, sex, body mass index (BMI), glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c), duration of diabetes and depression. A total of 202 diabetic patients aged 20 years or older were included in the study. The results showed that female sex and depression were independent risk factors for poor sleep quality among type 2 diabetics on insulin therapy. Findings may contribute to sleep disorder control in female patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus which has been linked to glycemic control.

Offshore high-grade limemud resources of west coast of India:Economic potential and industrial applications

Limestone is one of the essential raw materials in the cement,paint,steel,ceramic,glass,chemical,pharmaceutical,paper,and fertilizer *** India,only 8%of the limestone resources are placed under the reserve category,of which 97%is of cement ***,India depends on imports to bridge the demand‐supply gap of steel,blast furnace,and chemical‐grade *** of Geological Survey of India(GSI)to locate alternate sources for limestone led to the discovery of enormous quantities of carbonate minerals called limemud from the continental shelf margin of the west coast of *** carried out systematic studies to explore the nature of the disposition,quality,quantity,and suitability of the offshore limemud for various industrial applications.A preliminary estimate of resources using high‐resolution subbottom profiling and sediment core sample studies established the occurrence of more than 172 billion tonnes of high‐grade(The content of CaCO3 is greater than 80 wt%)limemud in 0.4–28.0m thick stratified sediment layers spread over an area of 18000 ***,physical,mineralogical,beneficiation,and agglomeration studies found the offshore limemud as a potential replacement for limestone in the cement,filler,blast furnace,steel melting shop,lime production,paint,and Grade‐I steel *** assessment of mining and transportation costs indicates that the offshore limemud(USD 5–6/ton)is more cost‐effective than that imported from other countries(USD16‐18/ton).With several advantageous factors like low impurity,mode of occurrence in overburden‐free stratified form,fine‐grained slurry nature,and shallow water depth,sustainable mining of offshore limemud could be a future reality with controllable technological,economic,and environmental challenges.

Additive manufacturing(AM)has revolutionized the design and manufacturing of patient-specific,three-dimensional(3D),complex porous structures known as scaffolds for tissue engineering *** use of advanced image acquisition techniques,image processing,and computer-aided design methods has enabled the precise design and additive manufacturing of anatomically correct and patient-specific implants and ***,these sophisticated techniques can be timeconsuming,labor-intensive,and ***,the necessary imaging and manufacturing equipment may not be readily available when urgent treatment is needed for trauma *** this study,a novel design and AM methods are proposed for the development of modular and customizable scaffold blocks that can be adapted to fit the bone defect area of a *** modular scaffold blocks can be combined to quickly form any patient-specific scaffold directly from two-dimensional(2D)medical images when the surgeon lacks access to a 3D printer or cannot wait for lengthy 3D imaging,modeling,and 3D printing during *** proposed method begins with developing a bone surface-modeling algorithm that reconstructs a model of the patient’s bone from 2D medical image measurements without the need for expensive 3D medical imaging or *** algorithm can generate both patient-specific and average bone ***,a biomimetic continuous path planning method is developed for the additive manufacturing of scaffolds,allowing porous scaffold blocks with the desired biomechanical properties to be manufactured directly from 2D data or *** algorithms are implemented,and the designed scaffold blocks are 3D printed using an extrusion-based AM *** and instructions are also provided to assist surgeons in assembling scaffold blocks for the self-repair of patient-specific large bone defects.

Morphological and molecular description of a new species of sandfly,Sergentomyia(Neophlebotomus)ashwanii ***.(Diptera:Psychodidae)from Western Ghats,India

Objective:To report a new species of sandfly,Sergentomyia(Neophlebotomus)ashwanii ***.(Diptera:Psychodidae)from Western Ghats,***:A systematic sandfly survey was conducted in the Thrissur and Kollam districts of Kerala,India using mechanical aspirators,light and sticky traps,both indoor and outdoor habitats,for a period of one *** acid barcoding of samples was performed targeting mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I(COI)gene and sequence generated was subjected to phylogenetic ***:Sergentomyia(Neophlebotomus)ashwanii,a new sandfly species is recorded and described in this communication.A single row of 10-12 pointed teeth in the cibarium with 4-6 small denticles or fore-teeth are the key characteristics that is distinctive from other members of the subgenus *** COI barcode followed by phylogenetic analysis of the nucleotide sequence confirms that specimens of the species belong to the same taxonomic group while the genetic distance(14.2%)with the congeners established it to be a different ***:The Western Ghats'being an important biodiversity hotspot and has dearth of systematic entomological surveys on *** current study tried to fill the void and also report a new sandfly species.
